Paraklesis to the Holy and Glorious Martyr King Luarsab

Priest: Blessed is our God…

And if a layman, he says: Through the prayers of our holy fathers, O Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us. Amen.

Through the prayers of our holy fathers, O Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us. Amen.

Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee.

O Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, who art everywhere present and fillest all things with Thy grace, Treasury of good things and Giver of life: come and abide in us, and cleanse us from every stain, and save our souls, O Good One.

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Thrice)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

O Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. O Lord, deliver us and release us from our sins; O Master, pardon our iniquities; O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Thy name’s sake.

Lord, have mercy. (Thrice)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Priest: For Thine is the kingdom…

Lord, have mercy. (Twelve times)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

O come, let us worship God our King. O come, let us worship and fall down before Christ, our King and God. O come, let us worship and fall down before Christ Himself, our King and our God.

O Lord, attend to my prayer: hearken to my supplication in thy truth; hear me in thy righteousness. And enter not into judgment with thy servant, for in thy sight shall no man living be justified. For the enemy has persecuted my soul; he has brought my life down to the ground; he has made me to dwell in a dark place, as those that have been long dead. Therefore my spirit was grieved in me; my heart was troubled within me. I remembered the days of old; and I meditated on all thy doings: yea, I meditated on the works of thine hands. I spread forth my hands to thee; my soul thirsts for thee, as a dry land. Pause. Hear me speedily, O Lord; my spirit has failed; turn not away thy face from me, else I shall be like to them that go down to the pit. Cause me to hear thy mercy in the morning; for I have hoped in thee; make known to me, O Lord, the way wherein I should walk; for I have lifted up my soul to thee. Deliver me from mine enemies, O Lord; for I have fled to thee for refuge. Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God; thy good Spirit shall guide me in the straight way. Thou shalt quicken me, O Lord, for thy name's sake; in thy righteousness thou shalt bring my soul out of affliction. And in thy mercy thou wilt destroy mine enemies, and wilt destroy all those that afflict my soul; for I am thy servant.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, glory to Thee, O God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, glory to Thee, O God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee.

God is the Lord and hath appeared unto us; blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Verse 1: O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good; for His mercy endureth for ever. Verse 2: All the nations compassed me about, and in the name of the Lord I withstood them. Verse 3: I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. Verse 4: The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner; this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes.

The land of the Georgians delighteth today in the feast of this great king, for he endured torments of many kinds for Christ, and, forsaking the passing kingdom, gained the unfading riches of the Kingdom, Luarsab, illustrious among martyrs; and now he intercedeth for us who praise him.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

The land of the Georgians delighteth today in the feast of this great king, for he endured torments of many kinds for Christ, and, forsaking the passing kingdom, gained the unfading riches of the Kingdom, Luarsab, illustrious among martyrs; and now he intercedeth for us who praise him.

Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

We will never cease, O Theotokos, we the unworthy, from speaking of thy mighty acts; for hadst thou not stood before us to intercede, who would have kept us free until now? We will not depart from thee, O Lady, for thou ever savest thy servants from all misfortunes.

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy great mercy; and according to the multitude of thy compassions blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I am conscious of mine iniquity; and my sin is continually before me. Against thee only have I sinned, and done evil before thee: that thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged. For, behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother conceive me. For, behold, thou lovest truth: thou hast manifested to me the secret and hidden things of thy wisdom. Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be purified: thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow. Thou shalt cause me to hear gladness and joy: the afflicted bones shall rejoice. Turn away thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit in my inward parts. Cast me not away from thy presence; and remove not thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of thy salvation: establish me with thy directing Spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and ungodly men shall turn to thee. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation: and my tongue shall joyfully declare thy righteousness. O Lord, thou shalt open my lips; and my mouth shall declare thy praise. For if thou desiredst sacrifice, I would have given it: thou wilt not take pleasure in whole-burnt-offerings. Sacrifice to God is a broken spirit: a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, to Sion in thy good pleasure; and let the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then shalt thou be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, offering, and whole-burnt-sacrifices: then shall they offer calves upon thine altar.

Irmos: Come, ye peoples, let us sing with a hymn to Christ, who by a wonder delivered His people from bondage in Egypt, with a song of victory, for He is glorified.

Holy martyr, pious King Luarsab, pray to God for us.

Who shall tell of thy greatness, O king, holy and chosen? For thou didst shed thy blood for Christ and didst not spare thyself for His sake.

Holy martyr, pious King Luarsab, pray to God for us.

When thou wast offered as a sacrifice, a fragrant soul, upon the heavenly table, there was straightway given thee by Christ a countless multitude of graces, which ever bestoweth mercy upon us from heaven.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Disdain not the supplication of us who flee to thee with hope, but be a fervent mediator before God, that He may save us.

Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

A conception beyond word and a birth above understanding, and a nursing beyond nature: for thou conceivest timelessly, bearest incorruptibly and nursest in virginity. O this strange mystery of thine, O Virgin!

Irmos: Strengthen them that trust in Thee, O Lord, Thou who by the Cross didst slay our sin and plant Thy fear in our hearts, O Lover of mankind.

Holy martyr, pious King Luarsab, pray to God for us.

Thou didst courageously put on the mail of faith and take up the sign of the Cross as a weapon, and wast shown a valiant soldier of Christ, for thou didst withstand the tyrants and cut down the deception of the devil.

Holy martyr, pious King Luarsab, pray to God for us.

Thou who didst bravely bear the wrath of the godless, didst scorn deception and boldly confess Christ, now open to us the doors of mercy by thy prayer.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Now heal our many wounds by thy prayer acceptable to God, and grant us wisdom to discern good and evil, and give us strength to forgive.

Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

The Word born of thee showed thee forth, O Theotokos, as one that poureth forth graces and a fountain of blessing, for He made thee the beginning of His flesh, O thou full of grace.

Deliver from temptations them that ever hope in thy holiness, O all-praised king and martyr, valiant Luarsab, for after God we all flee to thee as to an unbreachable wall and intercession.

Look upon us, O all-praised Theotokos, and heal the grievous wounds of our bodies and the sicknesses of our souls.

Choir: Amen.

Thou didst gain within thyself wisdom, radiant and unfading, whereby thou wast filled with fitting counsel and with prudence in all things, O Luarsab; wherefore, seeking wisdom, thou didst gain the perfection of graces and the nobility of the soul, didst adorn it with all-holy dogma, join the law of conscience to the commandments of Christ, and direct thy natural longing toward the only Beloved: therefore entreat Christ God to grant remission of sins to them that with longing keep the feast of thy honoured memory.

Irmos: I have heard, O Lord, of the dispensation of Thy holy mysteries, and I have glorified Thee, O only Lover of mankind.

Holy martyr, pious King Luarsab, pray to God for us.

Help us who are eagerly prepared to praise thy feast and to magnify thy memory with praises.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Cease not to intercede for us all, for deliverance from the temptations that beset us, who through thee entreat God.

Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

He who is timeless became a new man, and the Word without beginning became thy Son; therefore, O Virgin, we call thee blessed, as thou didst say.

Irmos: O Giver of light to the luminaries and salvation of the despairing, Christ the Saviour of all, to Thee we rise early, O King of peace: enlighten us with Thy light, for apart from Thee, O Good One, we know no other God.

Holy martyr, pious King Luarsab, pray to God for us.

Thine invincible courage shone forth more brightly than the sun, drove away all the tyranny of the enemy and made radiant the hearts of all the faithful; therefore Christ exalted thee and called thee to Himself.

Holy martyr, pious King Luarsab, pray to God for us.

As the radiance of the sun and the moon, so thy memory enlighteneth our land, for thou becamest the dwelling of that divine light, and thou drivest the darkness of the passions from all the faithful.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Thy courage gladdeneth the understanding of them that praise thee and maketh the mind bright as the dawn, O radiant Luarsab: the valour of thy soul, the soundness of thy judgment and the firmness of thy mind; now, O blessed one, make our mind also bright as the dawn.

Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

O Theotokos, may the Sun that clothed thee and that thou bearest upon a light cloud, the Sun of righteousness, cut down and shatter the idols of my soul smitten with darkness, and make me a worthy and cleansed dwelling for that Sun, O thou favoured by God.

Irmos: The billow of sin hath compassed me about, and I flee to Thy many mercies: bring me up from drowning, O Good One, O my God, I entreat Thee.

Holy martyr, pious King Luarsab, pray to God for us.

Now drive away the mist of darkness from our souls, and heal the infirmities of them that with longing celebrate thy memory and with faith sing to thee.

Hierarchs with priests, young men and maidens, elders and children and all the multitude of the people gather in the church and with joy celebrate thy praises.

Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

The Lord said to His disciples, Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues; and ye shall be brought before governors and kings for My sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles. But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you. And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death. And ye shall be hated of all men for My name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.

Choir: Glory to Thee, O Lord, glory to Thee.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Through the intercessions of the holy and glorious martyr King Luarsab, O Merciful One, blot out the multitude of our transgressions.

Rejoice radiantly today, O Church of the Georgians, for thou receivest a great boast: behold, the glorious king who confessed the holy Virgin as Theotokos is glorified in thee with the crown of martyrdom.

It is truly meet that we should magnify thee, O Theotokos, who art ever-blessed and all-immaculate and the Mother of our God. Thee, more honourable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, who without corruption gavest birth to God the Word, the only Theotokos, we magnify in song.

The priest censes.

Let us hasten to the memorial of the holy king, O ye Georgian people, and let us praise with hymns and spiritual songs Luarsab, valiant in struggle, brave and invincible, from whom healing springeth up for all that sing.

All-holy is thy struggle and worthy of hymns, and thy name greatly to be praised; thou restest in the heavens and standest before the King with the hosts of angels: look down a little from thence upon us and see what we perform, and accept the poverty of our words.

O all-holy Theotokos, Lady Mary, through the prayers of the victorious martyr King Luarsab make us worthy to glorify and to sing of thy Son and our God:

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Thrice)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

O Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. O Lord, deliver us and release us from our sins; O Master, pardon our iniquities; O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Thy name’s sake.

Lord, have mercy. (Thrice)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us; for, at a loss for any defence, we sinners offer to Thee, our good Master, this supplication: Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

O Lord, have mercy on us, for we have put our trust in Thee; be not exceeding wroth with us, nor remember our iniquities; but look upon us now, as Thou art compassionate, and deliver us from Thy just wrath; for Thou art our God, and we are Thy people; we are all the work of Thy hands, and Thy name is called upon us; and have mercy on us.

Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Open unto us the doors of compassion, O blessed Theotokos, that hoping in thee we may not perish, but through thee be delivered from our adversaries, for thou art the salvation of the Christian race.

Priest: Have mercy on us, O God, according to Thy great mercy, we pray Thee, hearken and have mercy.

Choir: Lord, have mercy. (Thrice)

Priest: Again we pray for mercy, life, peace, health, long life, salvation, enlightenment, forgiveness, prosperity and quiet for the servants (or handmaids) of God and all the children of our Church, that the Lord our God may preserve this our royal city and this holy church and all the cities and villages of Iberia from famine, pestilence, earthquake, flood, fire, the sword, the invasion of foreigners, civil war and deadly plague; that God, in His goodness and love for mankind, may be merciful to us so that we may stand well, and may turn away from us the wrath that daily cometh upon us, and deliver us from His righteous judgement that is laid upon us, and have mercy on us.

Choir: Lord, have mercy. (40 times)

Priest: Hear us, O God our Saviour, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of them that are far off upon the sea; and be gracious, be merciful unto our sins, and have mercy on us; for Thou art a merciful God who lovest mankind, and unto Thee we send up glory, to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages.

Choir: Amen.

O all-glorious holy martyr of Christ, who didst endure courageously, renowned warrior, invincible in battles and unashamed in afflictions, swift helper of those who entreat thee and giver of mercy, God-crowned King Luarsab!

O radiant and great adornment of the martyrs and most glorious king of Georgia, holy Luarsab! Remember us before God, for love of whom thou didst shed thy blood, O glorious one, and by the radiance of thy holiness quench the mystery of lawlessness stirred up against our beloved people, and shelter us from the assembly of heretics, which is “the abomination of desolation”; grant us victory over them and the confirming of Orthodoxy from Christ God, and renew again our faith in Christ, and grant us unfailing love for God, king and fatherland, and raise up for us the horn of anointing, that we may not become like the senseless beasts, like those idolaters and others so foolish, as those who have fallen away of their own will and forgotten eternal life. Strengthen in their ministry the Most Holy and Most Blessed Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Archbishop of Mtskheta-Tbilisi and Metropolitan of Bichvinta and Tskhum-Abkhazeti, the great lord, our father Ilia, the most reverend metropolitans, archbishops and bishops, the honourable priests, the deacons in Christ and all the monastic orders, the members of the Orthodox Church and all right-believing Christians.

O illustrious, valiant and renowned crowned one, brave Luarsab! With a mercy like that of Jesus God intercede before Him, that He may grant glory to the churches, honour to the clergy, good shepherding of the people to rulers, courage to soldiers, sinlessness to the laity and chastity to women; and to us a life of good conduct, adornment with works of mercy, enlightenment through holy prayer, cleansing through confession, radiance through communion, an honourable departure, the inheritance of the kingdom, singing with the angels, reigning with the saints, and with thee glory and thanksgiving; for to Him befitteth all glory, honour and worship, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Priest: Wisdom!

O most holy Theotokos, save us.

Choir: More honourable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, who without corruption gavest birth to God the Word, the true Theotokos, we magnify thee.

Priest: Glory to Thee, O our God, glory to Thee.

Choir: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen. Lord, have mercy. (3 times) Bless.

The priest gives the dismissal.

Choir: Amen.

A layman: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Lord, have mercy. (Thrice)

O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, through the prayers of Thine all-holy Mother, of the glorious and all-praised martyr King Luarsab and of all the saints, have mercy on us. Amen.

While his icon is kissed we sing thus:

Not that we are worthy to recall thy radiant struggle, but thy love greatly moveth us, and with all our heart we offer thee supplication, O valiant Luarsab: help us who flee to thy precious and holy icon and ever ask thy help; O glorious one, withhold not thy protection from the faithful peoples and them that magnify thy feast, and deliver us all from afflictions and temptations.

O Lady, all-radiant Mary, through the prayers of our holy and blessed King Luarsab the martyr, direct the days of our life to the glory of thy Son and our God. Amen.
