Supplicatory Paraklesis to the Holy and Pious King of Georgia David the Builder

Priest: Blessed is our God, always, now and ever and unto the ages of ages.

Reader: Amen. Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee.

O Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, who art everywhere present and fillest all things with Thy grace, Treasury of good things and Giver of life: come and abide in us, and cleanse us from every stain, and save our souls, O Good One.

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Thrice)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

O Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. O Lord, deliver us and release us from our sins; O Master, pardon our iniquities; O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Thy name’s sake.

Lord, have mercy. (Thrice)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Priest: For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, now and ever and unto the ages of ages.

Singers: Amen.

Lord, have mercy. (Twelve times)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

O come, let us worship God our King. O come, let us worship and fall down before Christ, our King and God. O come, let us worship and fall down before Christ Himself, our King and our God.

Reader: O Lord, attend to my prayer: hearken to my supplication in thy truth; hear me in thy righteousness. And enter not into judgment with thy servant, for in thy sight shall no man living be justified. For the enemy has persecuted my soul; he has brought my life down to the ground; he has made me to dwell in a dark place, as those that have been long dead. Therefore my spirit was grieved in me; my heart was troubled within me. I remembered the days of old; and I meditated on all thy doings: yea, I meditated on the works of thine hands. I spread forth my hands to thee; my soul thirsts for thee, as a dry land. Pause. Hear me speedily, O Lord; my spirit has failed; turn not away thy face from me, else I shall be like to them that go down to the pit. Cause me to hear thy mercy in the morning; for I have hoped in thee; make known to me, O Lord, the way wherein I should walk; for I have lifted up my soul to thee. Deliver me from mine enemies, O Lord; for I have fled to thee for refuge. Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God; thy good Spirit shall guide me in the straight way. Thou shalt quicken me, O Lord, for thy name's sake; in thy righteousness thou shalt bring my soul out of affliction. And in thy mercy thou wilt destroy mine enemies, and wilt destroy all those that afflict my soul; for I am thy servant.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, glory to Thee, O God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, glory to Thee, O God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee.

We will never cease, O Theotokos, we the unworthy, from speaking of thy mighty acts; for hadst thou not stood before us to intercede, who would have delivered us from so many dangers? And who would have kept us free until now? We will not depart from thee, O Lady, for thou ever savest thy servants from all misfortunes.

“Let us sing”; “Strengthen”; prokeimenon, Tone 1; “I have heard”; “From the night”; “I cried”; kontakion, Tone 6; the Gospel according to John; “Blessed art Thou”; “Bless”; “Magnify”; a prayer to be said kneeling.

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy great mercy; and according to the multitude of thy compassions blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I am conscious of mine iniquity; and my sin is continually before me. Against thee only have I sinned, and done evil before thee: that thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged. For, behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother conceive me. For, behold, thou lovest truth: thou hast manifested to me the secret and hidden things of thy wisdom. Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be purified: thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow. Thou shalt cause me to hear gladness and joy: the afflicted bones shall rejoice. Turn away thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit in my inward parts. Cast me not away from thy presence; and remove not thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of thy salvation: establish me with thy directing Spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and ungodly men shall turn to thee. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation: and my tongue shall joyfully declare thy righteousness. O Lord, thou shalt open my lips; and my mouth shall declare thy praise. For if thou desiredst sacrifice, I would have given it: thou wilt not take pleasure in whole-burnt-offerings. Sacrifice to God is a broken spirit: a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, to Sion in thy good pleasure; and let the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then shalt thou be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, offering, and whole-burnt-sacrifices: then shall they offer calves upon thine altar.

The blessed nature of the bride that came from Lebanon, watered with the water of piety, thou didst raise higher than the cedars of Lebanon, plain for all to see, and didst encompass it with good deeds as with myrtles, O David.

Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Behold, the bride of the Holy Spirit hath gathered myrrh and ointment, and from her fingers she droppeth myrrh upon the dead to give them life, and ointment to drive away the stench of sins.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Great and all-wondrous, O David, are the graces in thee, which the all-sovereign Spirit laid there: a kingship that loveth wisdom and a command of hosts that acteth by the word and is most skilled in things as they are.

Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

A new thing came to pass in thee, O Theotokos, for thou didst bear Him whom the Father, all-unoriginate, begot before the morning star; through Him He established the heavens, and without Him nothing was made by the Father.

Irmos: He who looseth the darkness of the ordinances written in the first law and giveth His graces to the faithful, Christ, was born of the Virgin and hath led us to the light of His Godhead.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

When I was about to chant to thee with hymns, O David, thou didst not dishonour the one who beheld; but, that it might be the more believed, thou wast glorified to me by a great sign.

Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

The conception of a mother without a man and a birth without corruption, O Bride, and nursing in virginity — who ever heard of it? — was granted thee by God.

Deliver thy servants from dangers, O most holy Virgin Theotokos, for after God we all flee unto thee, as to an unbreakable wall and protection.

Look down with favour upon us, O all-praised Theotokos, and heal the grievous wounds of our bodies and the sicknesses of our souls. (The small litany.)

Singers: O hope and refuge of Christians that faileth not, intercession with the Creator acceptable and well received, disdain not the voices of sinners’ prayers; but, since thou art good, make haste to help us who cry to thee with faith, O thou only blessed one. Hasten to entreat and be swift to intercede, stretching out thy hand with compassion, O Theotokos, who dost ever intercede for them that honour thee.

The Lord said to the Jews who came unto Him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers. This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which He spake unto them. Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. All that ever came before Me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door: by Me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

Singers: Glory to Thee, O Lord, glory to Thee.

Reader: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Through the intercessions of our holy and pious King David, O Merciful One, blot out the multitude of our transgressions.

Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Merciful One, blot out the multitude of our transgressions.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy, and according to the multitude of Thy compassions blot out my transgression, and have mercy on me, O God.

And upon this:

Thou who, like the firmament of heaven, didst adorn the round of thy soul with the unsetting stars of good deeds, O David, luminary of the world and strength of the Church, be an intercessor for them that praise thee. (A prayer to be said by the priest)

Irmos: The burning bush and the bedewed furnace of the Chaldeans truly foreshadowed thee, O Theotokos, for thou didst receive the fire of the Godhead in thy womb unharmed; to Him we cry and say: Blessed art Thou, O Lord God of our fathers.

Holy and pious King David, pray to God for us.

Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

The fierce furnace kindled of old on the plain of Deira, which by divine providence drew not near to burn the bodies of the spotless youths, portrayed the image of thy spotless virginity; for the fire of the Godhead kept thee unburnt through the coming of the dew of the Holy Spirit, O Bride of God.

Irmos: The furnace of fire in Babylon was of old divided by God, for the Chaldeans were scorched by its flame, while the youths, bedewed, said: Bless the Lord, all ye works of the Lord.

Holy and pious King David, pray to God for us.

Holy and pious King David, pray to God for us.

Thou didst stand in the furnace and rest in wisdom, to see and to hear what was commanded thee; and the talents, O wise one, thou didst not bury in the earth but didst multiply them, wherefore thou didst enter into the joy of thy Lord.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

The all-holy sceptre of sovereignty, faceted with the holy stones of piety and good deeds, thou didst adorn, and so didst judge thy people, O David, ever righteous before the Lord.

Thou who by the word of the archangel didst receive the Word, O Virgin, and didst deliver man from the raging passions of irrationality, loose also my irrational habits and enrich me with natural likeness to thy Son.

Irmos: Thou didst bear Him who is before the morning star of the sun, God incarnate, who came to us from thy womb and appeared to us in the flesh ineffably in humility; therefore, O Theotokos, we rightly magnify thee.

Holy and pious King David, pray to God for us.

By strangers and by other compositions of words thy wonder hath been praised for a long time, O valiant David, though it were fitting that it be praised by thine own words, surpassing thy words.

Holy and pious King David, pray to God for us.

The bold and insolent never had a place with thee; therefore let not these words be counted to me as boldness, but accept them, as a parent and forefather, as the words of a son who lispeth, O blessed one.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Them that celebrate thine all-radiant memory, O David, make bright as the dawn in understanding and mind by the radiance of the graces of thine intercessions, O holy one, and accept my words of praise, O all-glorious one.

Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Thou who didst bear the radiance of the Sun of the Godhead, whom God the Sun made to shine indivisibly before the creation of the luminaries, O Bride, cease not to intercede with Him for them that confess thee as Theotokos in very truth.

Singers: It is truly meet that we should magnify thee, O Theotokos, who art ever-blessed and all-immaculate and the Mother of our God. More honourable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, who without corruption gavest birth to God the Word, the only Theotokos, we magnify in song.

Reader: The house of the kingdom of the Georgians is made radiant through thee, O David, for it hath thee as a mediator before God and a guardian from every affliction.

Thou didst love the beauty of the house of God, O David, whereby thou didst find an abiding kingdom in the heavenly city, and in God's house on high thou rejoicest for ever with the children of Abraham.

The house of the prophet brought thee forth, whereby thou didst gain kinship with the prophets of the Lord, O David: be an intercessor with Him for them that praise thee.

The sceptre of sovereignty, O glorious one, thou didst adorn with priceless divine virtues, and didst make the crown priceless with holy stones, and didst gird on the sharp sword of courage, whetted by Christ through faith; and thou wast shown, O David, a second David, never turning aside from the law of the Lord.

Glory… Both now…

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Priest: For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, now and ever and unto the ages of ages.

Singers: Amen.

Reader: Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us; for, at a loss for any defence, this supplication do we sinners offer unto Thee as Master: have mercy on us.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

O Lord, have mercy on us, for we have put our trust in Thee; be not exceeding wroth with us, nor remember our iniquities; but look upon us now, as Thou art compassionate, and deliver us from Thy just wrath; for Thou art our God, and we are Thy people; we are all the work of Thy hands, and Thy name is called upon us; and have mercy on us.

Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Open unto us the doors of compassion, O blessed Theotokos, that hoping in thee we may not perish, but through thee be delivered from our adversaries, for thou art the salvation of the Christian race.

(The small (augmented) litany)

Deacon: Bending our knees, let us pray to the Lord.

Singers: Lord, have mercy.

O all-glorious King David, pillar of the mystery of piety, who wast shown an all-invincible soldier of Christ, weed of thorns and thistles the field which the immortal King purchased with His blood; build up the broken walls of Zion and renew the keeping of the divine commandments. Thou didst judge as a Christ-loving king, didst overcome enemies as a chosen soldier of Christ, and didst mourn in godly wise, not as a young king but as a lover of the desert: entreat Christ to send down upon us peace and great mercy.

O all-glorious and pious King David, with the brightness of the radiance of thy holiness enlighten our God-protected people; by thine all-enlightened prayer illumine the Most Holy and Most Blessed Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia and Archbishop of Mtskheta-Tbilisi, our great lord and father Ilia, the most reverend archbishops and bishops and all the priestly and monastic ranks; by thy mighty power strengthen the Christ-loving armed forces and all Orthodox Christians, and glorify them that bear thy name and entreat thee; entreat, O holy and all-glorious king, the sweetest Jesus whom thou hast loved, to grant us His grace and His countless mercy;

O all-praised and all-glorious king, by thy mighty prayer set free the captives, heal the sick, deliver them that are in temptations, save them that sail upon the sea, turn back sinners and bring them to Christ God, who receiveth all; and glorify and exalt in soul and body all that glorify thy holy name, that we may all be made worthy of the glory of the Kingdom and the great splendour of God's radiance; that with the angels we may sing, with the saints give glory, and with thee, crowned, bless the Father who crowned thee, the Son who strengthened thee and the Holy Spirit who spoke in thee, to whom is due all glory, honour and worship, now and ever and unto ages of ages.

Singers: Amen.
