Supplicatory Paraklesis to the Holy and Pious King David the Builder

Priest: Blessed is our God…

And if a layman, he says: O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, through the prayers of Thy most pure Mother and of all the saints, have mercy on us. Amen.

Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee.

O Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, who art everywhere present and fillest all things with Thy grace, Treasury of good things and Giver of life: come and abide in us, and cleanse us from every stain, and save our souls, O Good One.

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Thrice)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

O Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. O Lord, deliver us and release us from our sins; O Master, pardon our iniquities; O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Thy name’s sake.

Lord, have mercy. (Thrice)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Priest: For Thine is the kingdom…

Choir: Amen.

Priest: Lord, have mercy (12 times).

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

O come, let us worship God our King. O come, let us worship and fall down before Christ, our King and God. O come, let us worship and fall down before Christ Himself, our King and our God.

O Lord, attend to my prayer: hearken to my supplication in thy truth; hear me in thy righteousness. And enter not into judgment with thy servant, for in thy sight shall no man living be justified. For the enemy has persecuted my soul; he has brought my life down to the ground; he has made me to dwell in a dark place, as those that have been long dead. Therefore my spirit was grieved in me; my heart was troubled within me. I remembered the days of old; and I meditated on all thy doings: yea, I meditated on the works of thine hands. I spread forth my hands to thee; my soul thirsts for thee, as a dry land. Pause. Hear me speedily, O Lord; my spirit has failed; turn not away thy face from me, else I shall be like to them that go down to the pit. Cause me to hear thy mercy in the morning; for I have hoped in thee; make known to me, O Lord, the way wherein I should walk; for I have lifted up my soul to thee. Deliver me from mine enemies, O Lord; for I have fled to thee for refuge. Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God; thy good Spirit shall guide me in the straight way. Thou shalt quicken me, O Lord, for thy name's sake; in thy righteousness thou shalt bring my soul out of affliction. And in thy mercy thou wilt destroy mine enemies, and wilt destroy all those that afflict my soul; for I am thy servant.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, glory to Thee, O God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, glory to Thee, O God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee.

God is the Lord and hath appeared unto us; blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord. Verse 1: O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good; for His mercy endureth for ever. Verse 2: All the nations compassed me about, and in the name of the Lord I withstood them. Verse 3: I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. Verse 4: The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner; this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes.

Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

We will never cease, O Theotokos, we the unworthy, from speaking of thy mighty acts; for hadst thou not stood before us to intercede, who would have delivered us from so many dangers? And who would have kept us free until now? We will not depart from thee, O Lady, for thou ever savest thy servants from all misfortunes.

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy great mercy; and according to the multitude of thy compassions blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I am conscious of mine iniquity; and my sin is continually before me. Against thee only have I sinned, and done evil before thee: that thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged. For, behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother conceive me. For, behold, thou lovest truth: thou hast manifested to me the secret and hidden things of thy wisdom. Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be purified: thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow. Thou shalt cause me to hear gladness and joy: the afflicted bones shall rejoice. Turn away thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit in my inward parts. Cast me not away from thy presence; and remove not thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of thy salvation: establish me with thy directing Spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and ungodly men shall turn to thee. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation: and my tongue shall joyfully declare thy righteousness. O Lord, thou shalt open my lips; and my mouth shall declare thy praise. For if thou desiredst sacrifice, I would have given it: thou wilt not take pleasure in whole-burnt-offerings. Sacrifice to God is a broken spirit: a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, to Sion in thy good pleasure; and let the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then shalt thou be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, offering, and whole-burnt-sacrifices: then shall they offer calves upon thine altar.

Irmos: Of old the Word of the Father, who became flesh for the sake of us sinners, covered Pharaoh with the waves, together with his chariots and his mightily armed host; to Him we sing: O glorious God, Thou art glorified.

Holy and pious King David, pray to God for us.

We send thee as an intercessor to God, O invincible King David, that He may grant me repentance and remission of sins, as He granted them to thee and washed thee with tears, and that He may arm us against enemies with His invincible power.

Holy and pious King David, pray to God for us.

Brought up from childhood by great teachers of Orthodoxy, thou didst keep wholly apart from the playful ways of children; and when thou wast grown, O David, thou didst flee the lusts of youth and didst not bow to pleasures and indulgence.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

The nobles, together with the clergy, seeing thee valiant and wondrous in wisdom, hoped that thou wouldst deliver the people from countless enemies; and when thou wast sixteen years old, they anointed thee and crowned thee on the throne of all Georgia.

Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

O all-holy Bride, incorrupt one, enlighten and sanctify my thought and my soul, I pray thee, and drive away the mist of my folly and the gloom of my sins, that I may sing to thee as is meet.

Irmos: O Lord, who didst fix the vault of heaven and art the Builder of the Church, establish us in Thy love, Thou summit of all joy and strength of the faithful, who alone lovest mankind.

Holy and pious King David, pray to God for us.

Holy and pious King David, pray to God for us.

Having gained the gifts of understanding through fervent prayer, thou didst shepherd with love the people entrusted to thee and enrich all with every good thing of soul and body.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Thou didst imitate the hospitality of Abraham, O glorious one, and didst generously feed the poor and needy; now stir us also to imitate thy virtues, that we may flee the evil passion of the love of money.

Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Heal the wounds of my soul and enlighten my mind, darkened by sloth, O Theotokos, that I may sing to thee: None is holy as thou, O spotless and incorrupt one.

Deliver thy servants from dangers, O most holy Virgin Theotokos, for after God we all flee unto thee, as to an unbreakable wall and protection.

Look upon us, O all-praised Theotokos, and heal the grievous wounds of our bodies and the sicknesses of our souls.

Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

O unwedded Theotokos, holy Virgin, only intercessor of the faithful, shelter us from temptations and afflictions and deliver all of us, O spotless one, from evil besetting, for we have all our hope in thee; and save our souls by thy divine entreaty.

Irmos: As a stone cut out of the mountain without hands wast Thou, O Christ, from the Virgin Mother; therefore the prophet, beholding Thee, cried out: Thou hast come for the salvation of Thy people; glory to Thy power, O Lord.

Holy and pious King David, pray to God for us.

Holy and pious King David, pray to God for us.

Though young, thou didst understand, like an elder and a wise man, the work whereby thou mightest reconcile God, who was sorely angered, when thou didst gather the God-inspired fathers and those learned in the law at Ruisi-Urbnisi, and ye laid down the Council's Code.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

When the unworthy and disorderly had seized the bishoprics and taught the people lawlessness in place of the law, ye deposed them and laid them under anathema, and by the canons of the seven Ecumenical Councils ye set in order the life of the Georgian people.

Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

The theologians proclaimed the depth of thy mysteries to be wholly beyond reach, O incorrupt one, for thou didst ineffably bear the Uncircumscribed made flesh.

Irmos: He who looseth the darkness of the ordinances written in the first law and giveth His graces to the faithful, Christ, was born of the Virgin and hath led us to the light of His Godhead.

Holy and pious King David, pray to God for us.

Holy and pious King David, pray to God for us.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Thou hadst no need of the brightness of a candle, for thy fervent prayer and good works, like an unwaning light, went before thy reign, and by thy faith thou didst strengthen the faith of the people.

Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Thou didst bear for us a new Child, O holy Virgin, begotten of the Father before the ages, the only Word without beginning: entreat Him now, as thy Son and thy God, to have mercy on them that with a pure heart confess thee as Theotokos.

Irmos: To God we all cry out in sorrow, like Jonah the prophet: Bring us up from the destroying billows, O only Good One, we entreat Thee.

Holy and pious King David, pray to God for us.

Thy heart, made wise to judge thy people, was in the hand of God, and thou didst walk in all His commandments and ordinances: now be an intercessor for us also, that He may give us an understanding and wise heart to discern good and evil.

Holy and pious King David, pray to God for us.

Likening thyself to thy kinsman David, king of Israel, thou didst compose for us with a contrite heart the “Hymns of Repentance”, whereby thou didst show us the height of humility and the way of deliverance and life that leadeth to God.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Thy womb became more spacious than the heavens, for thou didst contain God, O unwedded Bride, who cannot be contained or circumscribed by created things.

For David, the invincible champion from on high and unashamed helper of piety, we, the people of thy flock enlightened by thee, weave a crown of praise, O our deliverer from all passions, and we cry to thee with joy: Rejoice, true father and protector of our people!

Thou didst gain the angels as those who stood by thee in all things, adorning piety with good deeds, and didst join an angelic mind to the nature of angels, O God-wise King David, and ever rejoicest with them before God; and we in wonder cry to thee: Rejoice, true father and protector of our people!

The Lord said to the Jews who came unto Him, I am the door: by Me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and know My sheep, and am known of Mine. As the Father knoweth Me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down My life for the sheep. And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear My voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

Choir: Glory to Thee, O Lord, glory to Thee.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Irmos: The burning bush and the bedewed furnace of the Chaldeans truly foreshadowed thee, O Theotokos, for thou didst receive the fire of the Godhead in thy womb unharmed; to Him we cry and say: Blessed art Thou, O Lord God of our fathers.

Holy and pious King David, pray to God for us.

Thou didst bring forth the cluster of life like an untended vine, O Mother of God, and didst pour out for us the wine that halloweth and gladdeneth the mind and looseth evil drunkenness.

Irmos: Of old in Babylon the fiery furnace was divided by God, for the Chaldeans were burned by its flame, while the youths, bedewed, said: Bless the Lord, all ye works of the Lord.

Holy and pious King David, pray to God for us.

Holy and pious King David, pray to God for us.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Thou, the best of all the kings of Georgia and among the Bagratids the most perfect in all things, when thou didst depart to stand before the Judge, having ruled the kingdom according to His will, the gates of heaven were opened to thee, and thou didst enter into the joy of thy good Lord.

Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Heal the passions of my soul with sweetness, O thou who art praised in all hymns; calm my life, enlighten my soul and guide me on the divine paths, that I may ever bless thee, O Lady.

Irmos: Thou didst bear Him who is before the morning star, God more radiant than the sun, incarnate, who came to us from thy womb and appeared to us in the flesh ineffably in humility; therefore, O Theotokos, we magnify thee with faith.

Holy and pious King David, pray to God for us.

Thy much-labouring body they buried in the gateway of Gelati, as thou hadst bidden, that those who come to that monastery might touch thy tomb and, receiving a blessing, sing to God with the voice of thanksgiving.

Holy and pious King David, pray to God for us.

Behold, we have gained thy tomb as a wall of strength, and we boast of it as those who possess a treasure, for thou ever hearest our supplication and our prostration and grantest consolation to all.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

After thy death the glorious Gelati heraldeth thy labours, and Shio-Mgvime proclaimeth aloud thy fervent prayers; and our heart longeth to go to those holy monasteries, for they make true grace spring up and raise us to the glory of God.

Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

The great mystery of thy glorious giving birth astonisheth the angels, O thou full of grace; it woundeth the choir of the saints with love and stirreth the fathers in godly wise.

It is truly meet that we should magnify thee, O Theotokos, who art ever-blessed and all-immaculate and the Mother of our God. Thee, more honourable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, who without corruption gavest birth to God the Word, the only Theotokos, we magnify in song.

The priest censes; a reader or a layman reads:

Thou becamest a faithful disciple of Christ the Saviour, and as He girded thee with His divine power, He granted through thee a renewal of grace to that glorious apostolic lot, the people enlightened by Nino of Cappadocia; for thy struggle, thy word and thy teaching became the helmsman and guide of the clergy and of the peoples.

We who trust in thee have gained as intercessor the builder of our land and the maker of the hymns of repentance, and we entreat thee: shelter us from the wiles and deception of the Antichrist, and grant us the fear of God and courage of soul.

O venerable king, holy David the Builder, commend us to our hope and protectress the Theotokos, that she may fulfil her words, as one who is merciful, and not remove her own lot from her intercession, but help us in every affliction and temptation and fill us with divine watchfulness, that we may all do righteousness and, after the manner of our forefathers, ever serve and glorify the all-holy Trinity:

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Thrice) Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever and unto the ages of ages.

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us; for, at a loss for any defence, this supplication do we sinners offer unto Thee as Master: have mercy on us.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

O Lord, have mercy on us, for we have put our trust in Thee; be not exceeding wroth with us, nor remember our iniquities; but look upon us now, as Thou art compassionate, and deliver us from Thy just wrath; for Thou art our God, and we are Thy people; we are all the work of Thy hands, and Thy name is called upon us; and have mercy on us.

Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Open unto us the doors of compassion, O blessed Theotokos, that hoping in thee we may not perish, but through thee be delivered from our adversaries, for thou art the salvation of the Christian race.

Priest: Have mercy on us, O God, according to Thy great mercy, we pray Thee, hearken and have mercy.

Choir: Lord, have mercy. (Thrice)

Priest: Again we pray for mercy, life, peace, health, long life, salvation, enlightenment, forgiveness, prosperity and quiet for the servants (or handmaids) of God and for all the children of our Church, that the Lord our God may preserve this our royal city and this holy church and all the cities and villages of Iberia from famine, pestilence, earthquake, flood, fire, the sword, the invasion of foreigners, civil war and deadly plague; that God, in His goodness and love for mankind, may be merciful to us so that we may stand well, and may turn away from us the wrath that daily cometh upon us, and deliver us from His righteous judgement that is laid upon us, and have mercy on us.

Choir: Lord, have mercy. (12 times)

Priest: Hear us, O God our Saviour, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of them that are far off upon the sea; and be gracious, be merciful unto our sins, and have mercy on us; for Thou art a merciful God who lovest mankind, and unto Thee we send up glory, to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages.

Choir: Amen.

Priest: Again and again, bending our knees, let us pray to the Lord.

Choir: Lord, have mercy.

O glorious king and wondrous struggler among men, holy David the Builder, sword of the Messiah and divine pillar of Orthodoxy; unshakeable tower of the Church and invincible champion of the Georgian people; glory of warriors and strength of pious kings; merciful one; defender of the poor and swift helper and advocate of those in affliction!

O thou clothed in struggle and invincible King David! By the radiance of thy holiness be our intercessor with Christ our God, that He may look with mercy upon the portion of His Mother, our people, which beareth the Lord’s cross on earth, and guard it from the snares of the enemy and from hatred among brethren; for the rulers of this world labour for its corruption and destruction, while we seek a way to escape their violence and trust in thy help, that faith may not fail in the Georgian people, nor in our land the rule of thy kin, blessed and anointed, who do justice and mercy equally upon all, and, encircling all the borders of Georgia by the power of the cross, may exalt and raise our height and strength from the land of forgetfulness, that we may be one flock and the Lord our Shepherd. By thy mighty power strengthen the Most Holy and Most Blessed Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Archbishop of Mtskheta-Tbilisi and Metropolitan of Bichvinta and Tskhum-Abkhazeti, our father Ilia, and the most reverend metropolitans, archbishops and bishops, and all the priestly and monastic orders, the pious commanders and governors of cities, the Christ-loving armies and all Orthodox Christians.

O valiant struggler among kings, holy David the Builder! Guardian of truth and composer of the hymns of repentance, entreat the all-merciful One to grant strength to the churches, zeal and watchfulness over souls to our pastors; to rulers wisdom, strength and good shepherding of the people; to judges impartial justice; to soldiers courage and strength of spirit; to superiors understanding and humility; to the laity sinlessness and to women chastity; to spouses love and concord; to children obedience; to the mighty the fear of God; to the sorrowful long-suffering; to the joyful restraint and the spirit of understanding and godliness; and that He may forgive us superstition and false belief, pride, guile, treachery, envy, hatred, love of money, ingratitude, murmuring, murders, thefts, fornications and disorders, and grant us, like thee, fervour of faith, divine zeal for the fatherland and brotherly love for our neighbour, love of righteousness and adornment with works of mercy, enlightenment through holy prayer, cleansing through confession, radiance through communion, an honourable departure, the inheritance of the kingdom, singing with the angels, reigning with the saints, and with thee glory and thanksgiving; for to Him befitteth all glory, honour and worship, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Priest: Wisdom!

O most holy Theotokos, save us.

Choir: More honourable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, who without corruption gavest birth to God the Word, the only Theotokos, we magnify in song.

Priest: Glory to Thee, O Christ God, our hope, glory to Thee.

Choir: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Lord, have mercy. (Thrice) Bless.

The priest gives the dismissal.

Choir: Amen.

A layman: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Lord, have mercy. (Thrice)

O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, through the prayers of Thine all-holy Mother, of the holy King David the Builder and of all the saints, have mercy on us. Amen.

While the icon is kissed we sing thus:

The Church of the Georgians rejoiceth in thy holy memory and calleth all her Orthodox children to praise thy struggle and thine invincible reign; and we, boasting of thy wisdom and valour, fall down before thy holy and blessed icon and entreat thee: as one who hath great boldness, intercede before God, that He may not requite us justly for our evil deeds, and may deliver us from all temptations.

O hope of all that sin, and after God advocate and deliverer of Christians, most blessed Mother of Christ our God, ever-virgin Mary, look upon our supplication and deliver us from all afflictions and pains.
