Akathist Hymn to Saint Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia, the Wonderworker
Through the prayers of our holy fathers, O Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us. Amen.
Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee.
O Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, who art everywhere present and fillest all things with Thy grace, Treasury of good things and Giver of life: come and abide in us, and cleanse us from every stain, and save our souls, O Good One. Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us (Thrice).
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
O Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. O Lord, deliver us and release us from our sins; O Master, pardon our iniquities; O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Thy name’s sake.
Lord, have mercy. (Thrice)
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Priest: For Thine is the kingdom…
Lord, have mercy. (Twelve times)
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
O come, let us worship God our King. O come, let us worship and fall down before Christ, our King and God. O come, let us worship and fall down before Christ Himself, our King and our God.
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy great mercy; and according to the multitude of thy compassions blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I am conscious of mine iniquity; and my sin is continually before me. Against thee only have I sinned, and done evil before thee: that thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged. For, behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother conceive me. For, behold, thou lovest truth: thou hast manifested to me the secret and hidden things of thy wisdom. Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be purified: thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow. Thou shalt cause me to hear gladness and joy: the afflicted bones shall rejoice. Turn away thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit in my inward parts. Cast me not away from thy presence; and remove not thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of thy salvation: establish me with thy directing Spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and ungodly men shall turn to thee. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation: and my tongue shall joyfully declare thy righteousness. O Lord, thou shalt open my lips; and my mouth shall declare thy praise. For if thou desiredst sacrifice, I would have given it: thou wilt not take pleasure in whole-burnt-offerings. Sacrifice to God is a broken spirit: a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, to Sion in thy good pleasure; and let the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then shalt thou be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, offering, and whole-burnt-sacrifices: then shall they offer calves upon thine altar.
As Christ God accepted the two mites of the widow, O all-hallowed Nicholas, so accept also this our poor hymn as something worthy, and turn not away from us, wretched in our passions, for we have not presumed out of insolence, O blessed one, but magnify thee in faith, and as a faithful priest and a great hierarch, a mediator between God and men, we cry to thee thus: Rejoice, wise hierarch, holy Nicholas, adorned with the grace of wonderworking!
O heavenly man, who didst appear on earth equal to the angels, who doth not marvel at thy divine zeal, or who doth not sing to Christ who gave thee such power, by which thou wast granted as a physician to the sick and a feeder of the hungry, a protector of the poor, orphans and the fallen, and a fervent helper of those in afflictions and of those who sing in faith:
Rejoice, servant of the Trinity armed with the knowledge of God; rejoice, all-praised labourer of divine grace; rejoice, teacher of fasting, sanctified from infancy; rejoice, unshaken tower of the faith; rejoice, rule of righteousness and consolation; rejoice, invincible pillar of humility and image of meekness; rejoice, shield that guardeth piety; rejoice, sword that cutteth off impiety; rejoice, first hierarch and honourable guardian of Myra in Lycia; rejoice, great shepherd and enlightener of the whole world; rejoice, wise helmsman of the holy Church of Iberia and protector of our people; Rejoice, wise hierarch, holy Nicholas, adorned with the grace of wonderworking!
When thou wast granted by God to thy blessed parents as a second Samuel, the grace of the Holy Spirit anointed thee with that divine myrrh and wholly loosed and dispelled the sicknesses of thy parents; and thou from infancy becamest a dwelling-place of God, and with uplifted hands, keeping vigil, thou didst glorify Him in the divine font: Alleluia.
Seeing the holiness of thy priesthood, He who knoweth secret things anointed thee the first hierarch of Myra and granted thee the grace of healing and of driving out demons; and thou by the power of Christ didst trample on the hosts of heretics and save thy flock from their delusion; now leave not us either without help, O holy one, and deliver us from every evil, that we may not fall into the snare of the enemy and may zealously praise thy deeds, worthy of praise:
Rejoice, fair fruit of pious parents, offered to the Lord from thy mother’s womb like Samuel the prophet; rejoice, divinely radiant shoot, grown up as a fruit of immortality and a plant of ascetic struggle; rejoice, wondrous infant, who didst refuse thy mother’s milk on Wednesday and Friday; rejoice, thou who art simple and lowly in mind and enlightened in spirit; rejoice, thou who wast made perfect by the wisdom of faith; rejoice, thou who bearest the name of victory and wast strengthened by divine power; rejoice, thou who art adorned with a multitude of struggles and worn down by labours; rejoice, thou who didst ascend to the height of the virtues and art greatly renowned for thy compassion; rejoice, all-radiant light, shining brighter than the disc of the sun; rejoice, man of God and steward of His mysteries, who like the great Paul wast caught up to the third heaven and didst stand before the throne of God; rejoice, wise helmsman of the holy Church of Iberia and protector of our people; Rejoice, wise hierarch, holy Nicholas, adorned with the grace of wonderworking!
Armed with the grace of the Spirit, thou didst teach in Orthodox fashion at the Council of Nicaea the consubstantiality of the all-holy Trinity, and didst strangle Arius, the destroyer of the Lord’s people, with the sinew of thy words, and didst courageously overthrow the confusion of Sabellius and deliver the faithful from their defilement; therefore we praise thee, the wise and holy hierarch, and sing to God according to thy teaching: Alleluia.
Becoming a zealot and champion for the faith, O Nicholas, who didst speak well of God, thou didst appear as an imitator of the apostles in all things; thou didst preach the Son consubstantial with the Father and didst guard many Christ-loving people from heresy; so now also in our land the assembly of the wicked hath multiplied, but do thou scatter them like dust, cast them down by thy intercession and guard us ever, who sing to thee:
Rejoice, thou who didst search out the invisible depths of divine wisdom; rejoice, thou who by fasting and prayer didst quench the temptations of the devil and his fierce snares; rejoice, thou who turnest the guilty to repentance and drivest away the disobedient; rejoice, thou who makest the foolish wise and cleansest from ruinous defilements; rejoice, thou who teachest sin-loving men the sweetness of self-restraint; rejoice, looser of curses and giver of blessing; rejoice, protector of widows and requiter of those who wrong them; rejoice, intercessor for the poor and clother of the naked; rejoice, thou who cuttest off evil habits and blottest out the stain of superstition; rejoice, planter of all good conduct and God-pleasing life; rejoice, wise helmsman of the holy Church of Iberia and protector of our people; Rejoice, wise hierarch, holy Nicholas, adorned with the grace of wonderworking!
Hearing the blasphemy and crafty speech of Arius, thou wast kindled with divine zeal like Elijah, and boldly didst strike the enemy of the consubstantial one with thy hierarch’s staff; but the fathers did not understand the providence of God, and when they had stripped thee of thy hierarchal honour, they saw in a divine vision with what love the all-merciful Queen took thy hand and blessed thee with the Gospel and the omophorion; then they swiftly restored his honour to the true servant of the Mother of God and gave glory to her only-begotten Son: Alleluia.
Truly thou didst appear as a wise hierarch and a spotless and good shepherd, O God-inspired Nicholas, and, kindled with divine zeal, thou didst tear down those soulless temples of Artemis and cast down the altars of the idol-worshippers; so now also blot out the fierce idols of our mind and loose the wrath stirred up against us, that we may rejoice in spirit, O father, and all praise thy mighty power:
Rejoice, divinely wise one, who didst gain zeal for piety according to knowledge; rejoice, thou who leadest men to faith and good order; rejoice, good and watchful shepherd, who gatherest the scattered sheep; rejoice, thou who teachest us to live watchfully and soberly; rejoice, thou who according to the teaching of the apostles drivest away the darkness of polytheism; rejoice, thou who deliverest thy flock from waves of many kinds; rejoice, thou who bringest to nothing the insolence of the wrong-believing; rejoice, thou who showest the designs of heretics to be vain; rejoice, thou who castest down and scatterest priests who come in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravening wolves; rejoice, thou who settest the mind free and bringest the young to understanding; rejoice, wise helmsman of the holy Church of Iberia and protector of our people; Rejoice, wise hierarch, holy Nicholas, adorned with the grace of wonderworking!
O citizen of the Jerusalem on high, exalted above men, who as a good chief shepherd didst feed thy city weakened by famine and didst strengthen the infirm by the grace of thy healings, feed now my soul too with the bread of understanding and grant me to walk in comeliness in this world, that we may not become a reproach and a laughing-stock to our enemies, but after the custom of the men of our fatherland may stand firm and unshaken on the way of the commandments of Christ and sing with the thrice-holy hymn to the Trinity one in essence: Alleluia.
As a sweet and merciful father thou didst deliver three maidens about to fall into sin and shelter them from bitter shame, when thou didst secretly give their wretched father three bags of gold; so be thou too our surety and advocate before God and the lightener of the weight of our sins, that we may swiftly awaken like the Ninevites and be made worthy of repentance, who praise thee in faith:
Rejoice, man who art the soul’s desire; rejoice, preacher of truth and initiate of the vision of God; rejoice, treasury of divine wisdom and wealth of grace; rejoice, deep abyss of love; rejoice, rule of faith and champion of piety; rejoice, thunder of the divine preaching; rejoice, unshaken pillar of patience; rejoice, unfailing fountain of Orthodoxy; rejoice, helper of righteousness and unbending crusher of falsehood; rejoice, all-radiant luminary of the whole world; rejoice, wise helmsman of the holy Church of Iberia and protector of our people; Rejoice, wise hierarch, holy Nicholas, adorned with the grace of wonderworking!
Thou wast a faithful disciple of Christ the Deliverer, O wondrous chief of fathers, and didst instruct thy flock and people in the right faith and keep them spotless from heresy; so now also deliver me from the paths of perdition, O worthy Nicholas, and guide me to the haven of the divine commandments, that I may rejoice with the heavenly ranks and ever glorify the Creator of all: Alleluia.
We hope for the grace-filled consolation and help that come through thee, all-blessed Nicholas, and fervently entreat thy holiness: as by visions thou didst make known to King Constantine the innocent destruction of men by Ablabius and didst command the release of those who prayed to God through thee, and didst deliver the condemned from death, so deliver me too, O holy one, in the day of affliction, that, kept unharmed, I may boast and say according to our strength:
Rejoice, reprover of those inward hidden passions; rejoice, thou who spreadest the joy of grace in God-loving hearts; rejoice, all-wise labourer, who perfectest those who seek instruction; rejoice, thou who castest down the altars of demons for the glory of the name of Christ; rejoice, thou who quenchest the folly of sorcerers and soothsayers and their foul invocations; rejoice, thou who softenest hearts turned to stone and hardened; rejoice, thou who humblest those puffed up with pride; rejoice, thou who exaltest the manner of life of Christian virgins; rejoice, thou who deliverest innocent children from every uncleanness and vice; rejoice, deliverer of those condemned to death without trial, those far off as those near; rejoice, wise helmsman of the holy Church of Iberia and protector of our people; Rejoice, wise hierarch, holy Nicholas, adorned with the grace of wonderworking!
Thou becamest renowned among hierarchs for the height of thy teachings and wonders, and wondrous among the martyrs, O nobly victorious champion, for with a good will thou didst withstand heretics and tyrants even unto blood and didst wound Beliar with the arrow of thy teachings; and thy flocks, gathered by toil and spiritually begotten, by their humility attained to a great measure and extolled thee with hymns of fair praise as an imitator in all things of Christ the Chief Shepherd, and, emboldened by thy struggle, sang of His might: Alleluia.
Following the divine works of the apostles, thou didst also inherit their throne as an honourable hierarch, and, having grace from God, thou givest healing and the good fulfilment of petitions to all who flee beneath thy protection; now cease not to deliver all of us from the fierce afflictions and griefs that surround us, and turn our sorrow into joy, that we may eagerly, O holy one, not be silent in praising and singing to thee:
Rejoice, thou who didst lay down thy soul for thy flock; rejoice, thou who didst take upon thee reproach and scorn for Christ’s sake; rejoice, thou who didst courageously endure the darkness of prison and torment; rejoice, thou who didst put to shame the teachers of the false law; rejoice, thou who wast caught up to heavenly visions, beholder of divine glory; rejoice, thou who dwellest with the saints in the kingdom and carest for our salvation; rejoice, swift hearer of prayers sent up in cells; rejoice, thou who receivest suffering souls that flee to thee; rejoice, thou who bringest us in peace into the haven of eternal life; rejoice, thou who bringest wrath upon defilers of holy things and corrupters of Christianity; rejoice, wise helmsman of the holy Church of Iberia and protector of our people; Rejoice, wise hierarch, holy Nicholas, adorned with the grace of wonderworking!
Thy shrine, ever pouring forth healings, gushed with fragrant myrrh and made renowned the church of Myra in Lycia; but now the city of Bari rejoiceth, where thy myrrh-streaming relics are treasured, and to those who flee to them in faith thou grantest the grace of healings and great mercy, that kings and princes with priests and peoples may praise thee with hymns and spiritual songs as a skilled lawgiver, and, emboldened by thy struggle, may sing to Christ God who crowned thee: Alleluia.
Thou didst appear as a victor and champion of the people of the faithful in trials, and daily didst gladden all the poor and fallen and comfort the sorrowful; and when thou wast raised from the flesh to God whom thou didst long for, thou didst not forsake those who revere thee, but, portrayed in icons and remembered in prayers, thou workest wonders: in mercy thou carest on land and on the seas for those far off and near, and deliverest from trials those in sorrows and bonds and those who fervently praise thee:
Rejoice, vessel of the Holy Spirit and treasury of myrrh; rejoice, dwelling of goodness and virtue; rejoice, companion of the angels and citizen of heaven; rejoice, beauty of the fathers and fellow-struggler of the venerable; rejoice, consolation of monks and goodness of hierarchs; rejoice, thou who makest kings wise and helpest councils; rejoice, companion of the apostles and lawful director of the rich; rejoice, unshaken wall of all the faithful; rejoice, thou who didst shine with good reverence and art full of sweetness; rejoice, thou who standest with the choirs of the powers on high before the King of all; rejoice, wise helmsman of the holy Church of Iberia and protector of our people; Rejoice, wise hierarch, holy Nicholas, adorned with the grace of wonderworking!
Christ God, who glorifieth those who glorify Him, glorified thee with wonders both in life and after death, and showed thee as the most fervent deliverer of all who call on thee; now heal us too by thy help, and in delusions and in the furnace of afflictions sprinkle us also with the dew of thy grace, that our heart may not be cold to hear divine teachings and to glorify and sing to God: Alleluia.
The multitude of thy wonders, like a river full of water, watereth the ends of the world and granteth us consolation and courage, for by the grace given thee by the Lord thou swiftly healest manifold passions of soul and body, deliverest from trials, drivest away darkness, stillest the waves, loosest the passions, satisfiest the hungry and fulfillest every God-pleasing petition of those who honour thee and sing to thee with longing:
Rejoice, thou who waterest with divine teaching those who thirst in spirit; rejoice, thou who wondrously feedest those oppressed by famine; rejoice, destroyer of the perversity of the tyrants; rejoice, thou who castest down the insolence of the fighters against God; rejoice, protector from the attacks and harms of invisible enemies; rejoice, thou who quenchest the furnace of afflictions and sorrows; rejoice, deliverer from the wiles of falsehood; rejoice, candle that enlighteneth the wise and burneth the foolish; rejoice, reprover of leaders of the people and judges who have turned from the faith and work lawlessness, and merciful one to those unjustly persecuted by them; rejoice, thou who puttest to shame those who gather unjust gain and are enslaved to mammon; rejoice, wise helmsman of the holy Church of Iberia and protector of our people; Rejoice, wise hierarch, holy Nicholas, adorned with the grace of wonderworking!
Thou didst appear as fragrant ointment, O wondrous father, and didst make those who revere thee fragrant with the myrrh of thy virtues and scatter the evil stench of ignorance; so now also quench the vain and empty belief of our kinsfolk and wash away the stain of unbelief, that we may not fall into the snare of the enemy, and may sing with thanksgiving to the Lord who wondrously glorified thee: Alleluia.
From thy lips a fountain of grace sprang forth sweeter than honey, by which thou didst put to shame idolaters and heretics and turn many to the service of the true God; so now also open to us the door of understanding and grant us the wisdom to discern good and evil, and give us the power to forgive, that, attaining by virtue to the perfect measure, we may escape the snares of the evil one and all together praise thee as the guide and strength of the Orthodox:
Rejoice, thou who adornest the Church of Christ with the brilliance of thy wonders; rejoice, thou who makest the whole world fragrant with the fragrance of thy holy relics; rejoice, thou who enlightenest those held by the darkness of sorrow; rejoice, thou who didst make many good shepherds shine; rejoice, thou who swiftly bringest dawn to oppressed souls; rejoice, thou who exposest the manifold snares of the enemy; rejoice, swift banisher of fierce afflictions; rejoice, thou who givest courage to those held fast by the sleep of sloth; rejoice, cleanser of defiled and much-sinning souls; rejoice, thou who establishest in piety hearts shaken by the waves of the world; rejoice, wise helmsman of the holy Church of Iberia and protector of our people; Rejoice, wise hierarch, holy Nicholas, adorned with the grace of wonderworking!
Surrounded by many enemies and trials, we sing in praise of the height of thy mercies and entreat thee, all-holy Nicholas: the sick, as their physician; the afflicted, as their deliverer; sinners, as their intercessor; the poor, as their treasure; the sorrowful, as their comforter; and those at sea, as their pilot; and we who set our hope on thee ask thy help and utter the divine hymn: Alleluia.
Thou didst shine forth to all the faithful as a giver of healings and a wonderworker by the grace of the Spirit, and didst lay a firm foundation for those who desire the divine life; now entreat Him who is merciful to all to send forth worthy labourers and strugglers into His harvest, for the strengthening of all, that faith may not fail in our beloved people and that, made wise by the word of God, we may be made worthy to sing to thee:
Rejoice, thou who with the dawn of signs and wonders enlightenest those who revere thee; rejoice, thou who strengthenest those shaken by demonic trials; rejoice, thou who settest free the righteous from bonds and prison; rejoice, thou who inclinest mercifully to those who entreat thee and emboldenest those who revere thee; rejoice, thou who with living water refreshest those tried by the heat of affliction and the furnaces of sin; rejoice, healer of those who suffer from unclean spirits; rejoice, destroyer of the princes of darkness and conqueror of the wicked; rejoice, thou who undoest the sorcery of magi and exposest their mockery by victory; rejoice, unsleeping guardian and protector of those who praise thee; rejoice, thou who guidest in peace those who sail the sea in ships; rejoice, wise helmsman of the holy Church of Iberia and protector of our people; Rejoice, wise hierarch, holy Nicholas, adorned with the grace of wonderworking!
Thou who hast the power to intercede before the Merciful One, O father, leave us not without help, but give understanding to our authorities and governors who rule at this time, and wall them about with peace by the intercession of the Theotokos, that with unfailing courage they may govern well her lot, our people and our land, and be made worthy to praise and glorify her good Son: Alleluia.
We praise thee, the great shepherd and teacher of the whole world, and humbly ask of thee: O wonderworker Nicholas, as of old thou didst appear by a divine sign and deliver from the snares of the enemy those who came in faith to thy church, so now also look upon those who kiss thy precious icon with longing, and make the good God merciful to us, that He may have mercy on our people, humbled and despised until now, and send down courage of spirit and purity of heart on those who love thee and praise thee with longing:
Rejoice, stream of divine understanding and fountain that poureth forth grace; rejoice, thou who by the telling of thy life fillest all the faithful with joy; rejoice, worker of wonders and signs; rejoice, thou who stirrest to love those whose heart is grown gross; rejoice, protector from the snares of Satan and from the invasion of foreigners; rejoice, trampler of invisible enemies and overthrower of the destroyers of souls; rejoice, thou who stillest the waves of trials and calmest the passions; rejoice, thou who stoppest the mouth of all unbelievers; rejoice, deliverer from strife among brothers and mutual enmity; rejoice, guardian from sinful inclination; rejoice, wise helmsman of the holy Church of Iberia and protector of our people; Rejoice, wise hierarch, holy Nicholas, adorned with the grace of wonderworking!
O great hierarch Nicholas, radiant as the dawn with goodly beauty! Knowing the multitude of thy intercessions and mercies, we hasten with love to offer our humble supplications; and thou, since thou hast great boldness, help us and calm the stirrings of passions invisible and visible, that we sinners may attain to the unwaning light of God and with the righteous sing to Christ God: Alleluia.
Say this kontakion thrice, then:
O all-praised great hierarch Nicholas, adorned with signs and wonders! Pillar and strength of the Church among men and luminary of the whole world, chosen servant of the Holy Trinity, offerer of rational souls to the heavenly Father, and swift helper and intercessor of all the helpless, the despairing and those who fervently call on thee.
O worthy shepherd of the flocks of Christ and guide of the fathers, wonderworker Nicholas! By thy fatherly mercy make the good God merciful to us, that He may renew again His love towards us and our faith in Him, and give us divine zeal for the fatherland, love of righteousness and courage of spirit, that He may fill us with divine watchfulness and grant us purity of life and the fear of God. Entreat, O blessed one, the sweetest Jesus whom thou didst love, to turn away the wrath stirred up against us for the multitude of our sins, and to look with mercy on our people, the lot of His Mother, which beareth the Cross of the Lord upon the earth, and like Lazarus to raise up our fatherland, Georgia, to its former glory, that we may not be trampled underfoot by plunderers of alien tribes and peoples, nor the heathen and heretics say, Where is their God, in whom they hoped? Strengthen in their ministry the Most Holy and Most Blessed Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Archbishop of Mtskheta-Tbilisi and Metropolitan of Bichvinta and Tskhum-Abkhazeti, the great lord, our father Ilia, the most reverend metropolitans, archbishops and bishops, the honourable priests, the deacons in Christ and all the monastic orders, the members of the Orthodox Church and all right-believing Christians.
O divinely wise Archbishop of Myra in Lycia, holy Nicholas! Cease not to pray fervently to Christ and ask for us, that He may grant glory to the churches, honour to the clergy, good shepherding of the people to rulers, courage to soldiers, sinlessness to the laity and chastity to women; and to us a life of good conduct, adornment with works of mercy, enlightenment through holy prayer, cleansing through confession, radiance through communion, an honourable departure, the inheritance of the kingdom, singing with the angels, reigning with the saints, and with thee glory and thanksgiving; for to Him befitteth all glory, honour and worship, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
It is truly meet that we should magnify thee, O Theotokos, who art ever-blessed and all-immaculate and the Mother of our God. Thee, more honourable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, who without corruption gavest birth to God the Word, the only Theotokos, we magnify in song.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen. Lord, have mercy (Thrice).
O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, through the prayers of Thy most pure Mother, of our holy father Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia, the wonderworker, and of all the saints, have mercy on us. Amen.
