Akathist Hymn to the Holy Hundred Thousand Martyrs, Slain in Tbilisi by the Khwarezmians for the Veneration of Icons
O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, through the prayers of Thy most pure Mother and of all the saints, have mercy on us. Amen. Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee.
O Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, who art everywhere present and fillest all things with Thy grace, Treasury of good things and Giver of life: come and abide in us, and cleanse us from every stain, and save our souls, O Good One.
Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Thrice) Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
O Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. O Lord, deliver us and release us from our sins; O Master, pardon our iniquities; O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Thy name’s sake.
Lord, have mercy. (Thrice)
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Lord, have mercy. (Twelve times)
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
O come, let us worship God our King. (Thrice)
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy great mercy; and according to the multitude of thy compassions blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I am conscious of mine iniquity; and my sin is continually before me. Against thee only have I sinned, and done evil before thee: that thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged. For, behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother conceive me. For, behold, thou lovest truth: thou hast manifested to me the secret and hidden things of thy wisdom. Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be purified: thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow. Thou shalt cause me to hear gladness and joy: the afflicted bones shall rejoice. Turn away thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit in my inward parts. Cast me not away from thy presence; and remove not thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of thy salvation: establish me with thy directing Spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and ungodly men shall turn to thee. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation: and my tongue shall joyfully declare thy righteousness. O Lord, thou shalt open my lips; and my mouth shall declare thy praise. For if thou desiredst sacrifice, I would have given it: thou wilt not take pleasure in whole-burnt-offerings. Sacrifice to God is a broken spirit: a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, to Sion in thy good pleasure; and let the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then shalt thou be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, offering, and whole-burnt-sacrifices: then shall they offer calves upon thine altar.
To the martyrs of truth and preachers of Orthodoxy, the many thousand stars of the Church, we the faithful offer divine praises and send up to you this supplication: accept our hymns, O martyrs, and deprive us not of your help, but enlighten us with the light of your radiance and drive away the darkness of ignorance from those who sing to you: Rejoice, ye hundred thousand martyrs, glories and crowns of the city of Tbilisi!
Again the Church hath put on the adornment of joy, and by the brilliance of your blood she hath set on her head a crown of beauty and of glory through your valour; for when they cut your flesh, your innocent blood was offered before God like the blood of righteous Abel; therefore the place of your martyrdom ever poureth forth healing and moveth us to offer a hymn and praise:
Rejoice, wondrous brothers and sisters, bound in oneness of mind by the bonds of Christ; rejoice, ye offered to God as a sacrifice without price; rejoice, ye united by one holy resolve; rejoice, ye established by zeal for piety; rejoice, ye well armed by the power of God; rejoice, ye slain without mercy by the Persians and mingled one with another in streams of blood; rejoice, ye adorned with the crown of martyrdom; rejoice, ye magnified by the pain of the contest; rejoice, ye who shone in the choir of martyrs; rejoice, ye who appeared for the consolation of the Church and the enlightenment of Iberia; rejoice, ye tried in the furnace of fierce pains; rejoice, crimson roses planted by God; Rejoice, ye hundred thousand martyrs, glories and crowns of the city of Tbilisi!
When Jalal ad-Din, sultan of Khorasan and king of all Persia, a fugitive from the Mongols, learned the strength of our land and the courage of the Georgian people, he purposed to become the husband of Rusudan and make himself king; but when they told it to the Georgian sovereign, she sent word that she would not even hear of it; then the sultan raged like a fierce lion and besieged Tbilisi, whose defenders, taking heart for battle, cried out the song of victory: Alleluia.
Then the defenders of the city armed themselves, and there was a mighty battle, and the Georgians won a brilliant victory; but the gates of the city were opened in secret by those wicked traitors within, the Persians of Tbilisi, and when the Khwarezmians had entered the city they slew all without distinction in a terrible slaughter; but ye, the dwellers of Tbilisi, were not shaken, but made ready for the contest; therefore we praise you and cry to you with one voice:
Rejoice, dwelling-places of the Holy Spirit; rejoice, luminaries of the land and of the faith; rejoice, divine pillars of Orthodoxy; rejoice, radiant stars of the Sun of righteousness; rejoice, true preachers of piety; rejoice, swords that cut off impiety; rejoice, monuments of courage and valour; rejoice, invincible hosts of the heavenly King; rejoice, branches of the vine of Christ cut off without mercy; rejoice, unfading flowers of the spiritual paradise; rejoice, uncaptured gates of the land of Iberia; rejoice, towers, strength and steadfastness of the Church; Rejoice, ye hundred thousand martyrs, glories and crowns of the city of Tbilisi!
It was not enough for the wicked one to break down the dome of Sioni and to set up and sit upon a throne on it, but he commanded that the icons of our Lord Jesus Christ and of the most holy Virgin Mary be brought from Sioni and laid face upward in the middle of the bridge of Metekhi, and that all the captive Christians should trample on the precious icons, and if they would not do this, that their heads be cut off; but ye would not accept the law-giving of that false Muhammad, and, standing at the edge of the bridge, ye glorified Christ with uplifted hands: Alleluia.
Then the executioners did as they were commanded, and brought fathers together with mothers and compelled them to trample on the holy icons; but most of you who were captive for Christ showed wondrous courage and would not endure the dishonouring of the holy icons and the forsaking of the law, but boldly and courageously confessed Christ God, and instead of freedom and honour received the crown of martyrdom; therefore we the faithful boast and cry to you thus:
Rejoice, ye who kept the faith undefiled; rejoice, ye who laid up the divine commandments in your heart; rejoice, ye who trampled on the heart of pride; rejoice, ye who overthrew unjust judgments; rejoice, ye who endured wounds with courage of mind; rejoice, ye who by hope in God shattered the whetted sword of the enemy; rejoice, ye who quench the furnace of afflictions and sorrows; rejoice, ye who establish on the path of the Lord’s commandments those who flee to you; rejoice, deliverers from the wiles of men and the guile of the enemy; rejoice, candles that enlighten the wise and burn the foolish; rejoice, ye who stir the slack to good conduct; rejoice, banishers of unclean spirits; Rejoice, ye hundred thousand martyrs, glories and crowns of the city of Tbilisi!
At that time the nobles of the people and the kings of Georgia, for whose sins their kingdom was punished by God, were worshippers at the demonic altar of Aphrodite and Dionysus and by works of uncleanness angered their Creator; therefore, O martyrs, we fervently entreat you: be our intercessors before Christ, that He may multiply for us chosen and wise leaders and give us a king who, like David, singeth to God in humility: Alleluia.
Seeing the fearful torments set before you, O renowned chosen ones, ye answered with a fearless mind: “We will not dishonour the image of our Lord Jesus Christ and of His incorrupt Mother, but venerate it with trembling, to whom worship and honour are due”, and ye stretched out your necks to the sword; therefore we, the sons of the Orthodox Church, cry aloud in wonder and say:
Rejoice, imitators of the angelic orders; rejoice, ye who wounded the torturers with the weapon of your words; rejoice, ye who crushed the designs of Beliar; rejoice, ye who won the crown of victory; rejoice, ye who teach us to abhor the bitterness and the sweetness of the passions; rejoice, ye who turn us from the love of fleeting and swiftly passing pleasures; rejoice, good intercessors and banishers of wiles; rejoice, deliverers from ruinous sloth; rejoice, healers of those wounded by the enemy; rejoice, ye who by firm faith scattered the delusion of the false law; rejoice, ye who manifestly enlighten the souls of the faithful; rejoice, ye who ask of God mercy for sinners; Rejoice, ye hundred thousand martyrs, glories and crowns of the city of Tbilisi!
O blessed and wise was your stand! For ye did not deny Christ through the threats and flattery of the tyrants, but strengthened one another: “Let us endure once a fearful death and receive endless immortality with Jesus Christ”, and ye sweetly glorified the Saviour who strengthened you: Alleluia.
Ye became partakers one with another, O blessed martyrs, and went out together to the arena of suffering, not all men, but some women also, yet all one in Christ Jesus, for among those baptised into Him there is neither male nor female; but we have become like alien nations fallen away from Christ, and cannot even withstand the heathen and the heretics; but make the Lord merciful towards us, that He may direct us on the path of truth and make us worthy to sing to you:
Rejoice, many thousand streams of one sealed fountain; rejoice, most choice vessels of holiness; rejoice, all-radiant champions of truth; rejoice, receptacles of divine radiance; rejoice, spiritual diamonds of patience; rejoice, all-unshakeable pillars of courage; rejoice, ye who sweetly bear the divine yoke; rejoice, conquerors of unbelieving enemies, fearless soldiers of Christ God; rejoice, ye who bore that one fierce trial; rejoice, ye who by firm faith exposed the godlessness of the tyrants; rejoice, helpers and protectors of the Georgian armed forces; rejoice, glorious adornments of the Church in heaven and on earth; Rejoice, ye hundred thousand martyrs, glories and crowns of the city of Tbilisi!
Then the grace of God was poured out ungrudgingly on your lips, and thus ye gave courage to those overcome by fear: “O pitiable and wretched fellow citizens, do not deprive yourselves of the crown which, behold, lieth before us to receive”, and with unceasing psalmody and prayer ye did not cease to glorify God: Alleluia.
Ye were not of one order, O victors in the contest, but some of you were bishops, priests and monks and servants of the church, and others soldiers and judges of the people; yet all offered themselves on the altar of suffering to Christ God; entreat Him, O all-blessed ones, not to take His help away from us, and to keep Iberia, the lot of His Mother, and the people of Iberia, that we may be saved in love and peace and call you blessed with faith:
Rejoice, ye who kept the nobility of the spirit; rejoice, ye who set your hope on God; rejoice, ye who took up the Cross of Christ and cast down the Saracens to the ground; rejoice, holy and spotless lambs who shed your blood for Christ; rejoice, ye who planted an unfailing love for God, fatherland and neighbour; rejoice, ye who by the wisdom of the spirit courageously endured fierce torments; rejoice, ye who set the erring on the path of truth; rejoice, ye who boldly cast down the delusion of foreigners; rejoice, ye who trample on evil thoughts; rejoice, ye who by wisdom guard those enlightened by faith and walking well; rejoice, ye who loose us from the bonds of our sins; rejoice, ye who stir to love those whose heart is grown gross; Rejoice, ye hundred thousand martyrs, glories and crowns of the city of Tbilisi!
Neither were ye of one age, O martyrs, but some were children and youths, and some old men and elders; yet by the unity of the faith ye came unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ; entreat Him to grant us the honour of worthiness and the grace of mercy, that we may pass well along the road of this fleeting life and praise His might as is due: Alleluia.
Blessed are ye, captives for Christ, some of princely rank and some of the nobility and of the common people, yet all born of God by the Spirit, by whom ye overcame the world, and, imitating the martyrs who suffered before you, ye hastened to the wedding of that fair and immortal Bridegroom; therefore we sing to you, O valiant ones, and bring you this doxology of victory:
Rejoice, ye who glorify the goodness of God in humility of heart; rejoice, ye who are clothed in the power of the Cross; rejoice, conquerors of raging haters of God; rejoice, shamers of all the wicked and slothful; rejoice, ye who bless those who sing to you in faith; rejoice, ye who show great mercy to the Orthodox hosts and armed forces; rejoice, ye who save all who fervently entreat you; rejoice, reprovers of time-servers and the crafty who renounce the struggle of our forebears; rejoice, merchants of the priceless pearl; rejoice, helpers and intercessors of those who do the will of Christ; rejoice, conquerors and crushers of evil spirits; rejoice, ye who turn our sorrows into joy; Rejoice, ye hundred thousand martyrs, glories and crowns of the city of Tbilisi!
When the tyrant saw your fearlessness and heard your prayer, he was enraged by your steadfastness and set executioners with drawn swords to cut you down savagely and destroy you; but ye, O valiant ones, counted the wrath of the lawless as nothing and were not terrified, but going to your passion ye sang to God and praised Him with the thrice-holy hymn: Alleluia.
Though ye were all confessors of the right faith, yet not all were Georgians, but some came from an alien law and, imitating those blessed martyrs Shushanik, Razhden and Abo, offered themselves for Christ; therefore we move you to intercede before Him, that we may not bow to lawlessness at the will of the godless, and may all call your struggle blessed:
Rejoice, ye who by unceasing prayer drive away the temptations of the devil; rejoice, ye who with the sling of your words scattered the teachings of godlessness and darkness; rejoice, ye who spiritually strengthen the Christians terrified by the lawless; rejoice, ye who by your struggle made the Church shine; rejoice, ye who scatter the invocations of the enemy; rejoice, ye who bring to nothing the many-woven devices of the enemy; rejoice, ye who enlighten those who revere you; rejoice, ye who bring to life our lifeless and lukewarm faith; rejoice, deliverers from tumult and war; rejoice, ye who refresh the faithful with that divine dew; rejoice, ye who restore our defiled mind; rejoice, ye who by your struggle received the light that passeth not away; Rejoice, ye hundred thousand martyrs, glories and crowns of the city of Tbilisi!
O concord of brothers, O love of neighbours, O one-mindedness of fathers and mothers! For their voices reached out one to another, and the myriads who heard it cried with one voice: “O Lord Jesus Christ, Son and Word of God, have mercy on us and direct this our course, and receive our souls into Thy hands”, and like the youths of old in the furnace they blessed God with thanksgiving: Alleluia.
Then the senseless fighters against Christ shamelessly fell upon you as upon lambs, and each strove to outdo the other: some struck you with the sword, others pierced you with spears and arrows and cut your flesh without mercy, and others tore you with knives and cast your bodies beneath the bridge into the Mtkvari; and when your martyrdom was complete ye were granted the unfading crown; and now ask for us forgiveness of sins and a good life, that we may call you blessed with joy of heart:
Rejoice, ye who conquered your enemies by valour; rejoice, ye who received a merciless death with thanksgiving; rejoice, ye who finished well the divine course; rejoice, ye who sanctified the surroundings of Tbilisi with your blood as with holy water; rejoice, ye who by your struggle magnified the right faith; rejoice, ye who spiritually enlighten our people; rejoice, ye who by the light of your martyrdom bring dawn to the darkness of the fatherland; rejoice, ye who by divine grace make the ignorant wise; rejoice, healers of sicknesses and wounds; rejoice, ye who give courage to those held fast by the sleep of sloth; rejoice, ye who bring to understanding those blinded by godlessness and lawlessness; rejoice, swift intercessors for those who honour you; Rejoice, ye hundred thousand martyrs, glories and crowns of the city of Tbilisi!
O spotless understanding, which shone forth first among the ranks and continued even to the last: of some who dwelt in Isani, Kala and Tbilisi, and of others who in the time of trial had fled from the surrounding villages as to a most mighty fortress; therefore we remember you as dwellers of the capital city, where the font of the second birth brought forth you, a multitude of myriads, and ye offered God the praise of doxology: Alleluia.
When the water of the river was filled with the holy bodies and dyed like purple, and the depth of the waters became your grave, on that night the banks of that river all around shone brighter than the sun with the outpouring of an unfading light which all beheld; therefore in your glorious memory our royal city is adorned with immaterial joy and cries out eagerly in the blessed Georgian tongue:
Rejoice, ye who gave up your souls to God untroubled; rejoice, ye who by the shedding of your blood turned that bridge and the abodes of Metekhi into a holy place; rejoice, ye who sanctified the great river Mtkvari; rejoice, ye who drive away diseases and infirmities of many kinds; rejoice, ye who bring dawn to our darkened mind; rejoice, ye who bring to life the enfeebled spirit of the fatherland; rejoice, ye who quench the flame of the passions and grievous diseases; rejoice, ye who by the fruit of your valour give heart to the faithful; rejoice, ye who by divine grace make the ignorant wise; rejoice, ye who root out the multitude of passions like tares; rejoice, ye who exalt this Georgian people too with surpassing joy; rejoice, ye who lead our minds up to heaven; Rejoice, ye hundred thousand martyrs, glories and crowns of the city of Tbilisi!
When your severed heads rolled upon that bridge, near the place where they burned the body of the holy martyr Abo, from then on ye became deliverers of the people of Tbilisi from countless calamities; so now also guard our capital city, which is now fiercely tossed, and calm the waves of the passions and the flame of heresies, for ye are its boast, that our rulers and governors may not fall away from the holy apostolic Church and may ever glorify Christ, our King and God: Alleluia.
O ye women glorified by the valour of piety, who cast off womanly weakness and approached the contest like men and with courage! Now quench the designs of the wicked stirred up against our people, and deliver our mothers and sisters, the images and seals of the life of the fatherland, from all-destroying passions and shelter them from shamelessness, that with the love and fear of Christ, after the custom of the way of our fathers, they may glorify your memory and praise you unceasingly:
Rejoice, ye who endured torments for the sake of the Jerusalem on high; rejoice, ye who deliver from the corruption of sins and take our passions upon yourselves; rejoice, ye who plant the love of Christ among men; rejoice, overthrowers of the opposing powers; rejoice, deliverers from evil heedlessness; rejoice, ye who train children in obedience to parents and chief shepherds; rejoice, ye who cast down the insolence of the devil and bring his fearful wiles to nothing; rejoice, humblers of the envious and slanderers; rejoice, ye who laid aside every earthly care; rejoice, ye who sound the bell of spiritual watchfulness; rejoice, ye who soothe the wounds of our sins; rejoice, ye who calm those carried away by insolence; Rejoice, ye hundred thousand martyrs, glories and crowns of the city of Tbilisi!
Great is the radiant victory which ye showed while yet in the flesh, as though bodiless, for ye longed for death for Christ’s sake, by which ye came to immortality, and with the joy of your struggle ye beautifully dyed the Church of the Georgians in purple; therefore we worship Christ, who gave such intercessors and protectors to our beloved people, and we sing to Him and glorify Him as our Saviour and God: Alleluia.
Ye longed to receive the crown of martyrs, and, receiving from on high the grace of courage, ye did not shrink from that fierce torment and death, as though from some good delight, and by the cutting off of your heads, O blessed ones, ye cast down the many-wiled treachery of the enemy; therefore we who are in trials and afflictions receive the help of the divine grace that dwelleth in you, and according to our strength we weave for you this crown of praises:
Rejoice, wondrous and truly valiant warriors of the heavenly King, who courageously bore the wrath of the godless and made the glory of Christ to shine; rejoice, honourable company, for the multitude of your bodies and of your all-holy blood, flowing out as one great river, amazed the powers of heaven; rejoice, ye who are clothed in incorruption, for by the sprinkling of your blood ye quenched the embers of delusion; rejoice, ye who shine with invincible struggle, for with that blessed martyr Abo of Tbilisi ye are ever the guardians and protectors of the city of Tbilisi; rejoice, ye slaughtered like sheep, for the rivers of your blood water the Church of the Georgians and sanctify the multitude of the Orthodox; rejoice, ye who strove for faith and fatherland and overcame the teachers of the false law; rejoice, luminaries that never set, for ye shone brighter than the sun in the kingdom of the heavenly Father; rejoice, lampstands of Orthodoxy, for ye lit up the night of the Persian delusion; rejoice, ye who most fervently gave yourselves up for Christ, for ye received that reward of your labours; rejoice, steadfastness granted from heaven to the Orthodox, for ye are given to our people as a rampart; rejoice, citizens of the city on high, for your valour emboldens the Georgians; rejoice, victories and glories of our fatherland, for the people of Iberia have you as a river of healings and a treasury of wonders; Rejoice, ye hundred thousand martyrs, glories and crowns of the city of Tbilisi!
O chosen race, royal and priestly, who shed your blood for Christ! As the lightning of the sun and the radiance of the moon enlighten the world, so doth your memory, O blessed ones, enlighten all the Georgians who love the martyrs, for ye bestow on us the grace of healings and enlighten us with the brilliance of wonders; therefore we worthily adorn you, all-praised martyrs, and glorify God, who is wondrous in His saints: Alleluia.
This kontakion is said thrice, then
Again the Church hath put on the adornment of joy, and by the brilliance of your blood she hath set on her head a crown of beauty and of glory through your valour; for when they cut your flesh, your innocent blood was offered before God like the blood of righteous Abel; therefore the place of your martyrdom ever poureth forth healing and moveth us to offer a hymn and praise:
O spices, priceless ointments, fragrances of Christ, who illumine your land with the light of the Sun of righteousness; intercessors and advocates of the Georgian people, guardians and protectors of the city of Tbilisi, martyrs a hundred thousand in number!
O many thousand enlightened stars, swift helpers of those who entreat you and givers of mercy, remember us before God, and by your intercession deliver our people beset by trials and afflictions, that instead of mercy we may not receive the punishment of our presumption, but renew in us again, as it was in you, the warmth of faith, love for a pious king and faithfulness to the God-given fatherland enriched with your blood, and quench the mystery of lawlessness stirred up against our beloved people, which is “the abomination of desolation” that defileth the holy place. By your mighty power shelter our fatherland — Georgia — from every affliction, and be ever our fellow-fighters against the adversary who rageth against us, and guard our capital city from the invasion of foreigners. Strengthen in their ministry the Most Holy and Most Blessed Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Archbishop of Mtskheta-Tbilisi and Metropolitan of Bichvinta and Tskhum-Abkhazeti, our father Ilia, the most reverend metropolitans, archbishops and bishops and all the priestly and monastic orders, the commanders and the governors of cities, the Christ-loving armed forces, and our benefactors, and all Orthodox Christians.
O divine assembly, gathered by one holy resolve, ye hundred thousand martyrs! Intercede before God, that He may grant glory to the churches, honour to the clergy, good shepherding of the people to rulers, courage to soldiers, sinlessness to the laity and chastity to women; and that He may restore to us godliness, love of righteousness, many children, and mercy to widows and orphans; that He may grant us love of a holy life, hatred of unseemly deeds and contrition of heart, crowning with the saints and the inheritance of the kingdom of heaven, that we too with you may glorify the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages.
It is truly meet that we should magnify thee, O Theotokos, who art ever-blessed and all-immaculate and the Mother of our God. Thee, more honourable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, who without corruption gavest birth to God the Word, the only Theotokos, we magnify in song.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Lord, have mercy. (Thrice)
O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, through the prayers of Thy most pure Mother, of the holy hundred thousand martyrs and of all the saints, have mercy on us. Amen.
