Akathist Hymn to the Holy Martyr Boniface
Through the prayers of our holy fathers, O Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us. Amen.
Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee.
O Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, who art everywhere present and fillest all things with Thy grace, Treasury of good things and Giver of life: come and abide in us, and cleanse us from every stain, and save our souls, O Good One. Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us (Thrice).
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
O Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. O Lord, deliver us and release us from our sins; O Master, pardon our iniquities; O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Thy name’s sake.
Lord, have mercy. (Thrice)
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Priest: For Thine is the kingdom…
Lord, have mercy. (Twelve times)
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
O come, let us worship God our King. O come, let us worship and fall down before Christ, our King and God. O come, let us worship and fall down before Christ Himself, our King and our God.
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy great mercy; and according to the multitude of thy compassions blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I am conscious of mine iniquity; and my sin is continually before me. Against thee only have I sinned, and done evil before thee: that thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged. For, behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother conceive me. For, behold, thou lovest truth: thou hast manifested to me the secret and hidden things of thy wisdom. Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be purified: thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow. Thou shalt cause me to hear gladness and joy: the afflicted bones shall rejoice. Turn away thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit in my inward parts. Cast me not away from thy presence; and remove not thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of thy salvation: establish me with thy directing Spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and ungodly men shall turn to thee. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation: and my tongue shall joyfully declare thy righteousness. O Lord, thou shalt open my lips; and my mouth shall declare thy praise. For if thou desiredst sacrifice, I would have given it: thou wilt not take pleasure in whole-burnt-offerings. Sacrifice to God is a broken spirit: a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, to Sion in thy good pleasure; and let the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then shalt thou be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, offering, and whole-burnt-sacrifices: then shall they offer calves upon thine altar.
Thou who by a martyr’s death didst escape eternal death and dwellest in the eternal light, chosen warrior of Christ, accept now our prayer offered to thee in faith, and guard from every evil love and harmful desire those who praise thee: Rejoice, victorious martyr Boniface, crowned and all-fair!
An angel of light, quenching the fire of thy martyrdom with the dew of grace, guarded thee, O Boniface, sufferer for Christ, for thou didst hate the joy of the sin-loving man and love the true, holy and life-giving joy of the ascetic struggle; therefore we the faithful boast and gather to offer this divine praise:
Rejoice, thou who wast greatly renowned for thy compassion; rejoice, thou who wast distinguished for goodness and virtue; rejoice, thou who wast made wise and strong by the Lord; rejoice, thou who wast tried in the furnace of fierce pains; rejoice, thou who art adorned with the wounds of beating and the pain of the contest; rejoice, thou who shinest with the crown of glory; rejoice, holy candle kindled before God; rejoice, thou who wast well armed by the power of God; rejoice, thou who wast kindled sevenfold like fire with divine love; rejoice, thou who by the struggle of martyrdom didst reach heaven; rejoice, thou who art exalted with the choir of the bodiless; rejoice, thou who wast offered to God as a sacrifice without price; Rejoice, victorious martyr Boniface, crowned and all-fair!
For thy valour and beauty thy mistress Aglaïs loved thee with a sinful love, and thou, sunk in the vanity of this world, wast cast by drunkenness into grievous sin and seduced into fornication by her beauty; but God by His grace brought thee to thy senses and opened to thee the door of faith; therefore be not silent in interceding before God for those who sing to thee: Alleluia.
The ineffable power of God’s mercy was made manifest in thee, O valiant Boniface, for the wondrous story of thy life showeth us clearly how great sinners receive forgiveness of sins from God our Father when they offer true repentance, and, filled with eternal delight, rejoice in the kingdom of heaven; therefore we offer thee this voice of divine praise:
Rejoice, thou who bringest to life the enfeebled soul; rejoice, overthrower of the wall of delusion; rejoice, thou who didst utterly hate an unclean life; rejoice, crusher of the heart of pride; rejoice, manifest guardian of the divine law; rejoice, preacher of the right faith; rejoice, unshaken pillar of Orthodoxy; rejoice, thou who by firm faith didst expose the godlessness of the tyrants; rejoice, sword that cutteth off the tares of idolatry; rejoice, glory and strength of the Church of Christ; rejoice, most valiant warrior of the King on high; rejoice, fountain of consolation and joy; Rejoice, victorious martyr Boniface, crowned and all-fair!
When Aglaïs learned that a countless multitude was being slain for Christ by Diocletian, repentance was kindled in her heart and she shrank from sin, yet she could not destroy in her heart her love for thee; and she purposed to bury holy martyrs in her own estate and thereby to arm herself with spiritual armour, that by their help she might be parted from her sin; therefore, weighed down with sorrow, she joined tears to prayer: Alleluia.
When Aglaïs said to thee: “We know that we are spiritually bereft of divine grace, but, as we have heard, the martyrs have boldness before God to guard and intercede, and their holy relics bestow grace and the mercy of God”, her word awakened thy soul, and thou didst say to thyself: “How much grace and how many gifts of God hast thou made void, O Boniface, by sin and drunkenness!” Therefore we adorn thee with praises, O blessed one, and make thee our intercessor before God:
Rejoice, radiant lamp that scatterest the darkness of godlessness; rejoice, thou who discernest the better from the worse and the good from the evil; rejoice, thou who didst well cleanse thy heart by the true faith; rejoice, thou who didst renounce sin and change the manner of thy life; rejoice, thou who didst put off the old man and bring the new to life; rejoice, defender of the wretched and the afflicted; rejoice, thou who amazest all by thy unshaken courage; rejoice, thou who raisest up our loosed and fallen nature; rejoice, thou who snatchest the despairing from the depths of perdition; rejoice, thou who bridlest vain impulses; rejoice, thou who lovest those who follow after good works; rejoice, thou who holdest back my feet from walking on every crafty way; Rejoice, victorious martyr Boniface, crowned and all-fair!
The blessed Aglaïs appeared as a preacher of the veneration of holy relics when she sent thee to the East to obtain the remains of martyrs who had suffered for Christ, from which grace flowed abundantly and eternal salvation was given to all who turned from their sins and kissed them with singing: Alleluia.
Then the life-giving grace of the Saviour drew near to thee and thou didst foretell the end of thy life: “My lady, if they bring thee my remains instead of the relics of the martyrs of Christ, wilt thou receive them with great honour?” thou didst answer Aglaïs, and thou didst say firmly in thy heart: “Enough of the slavery of sin”; thou didst depart wholly from sin and follow Christ; therefore we make bold to sing to thee:
Rejoice, thou who didst count fleeting beauty as nothing; rejoice, hater of drunkenness and adultery; rejoice, unassailable wall of valour; rejoice, unshaken tower of courage; rejoice, thou who teachest us to live watchfully and soberly; rejoice, haven of salvation for those drowning in the sea of sin; rejoice, propitiation of the whole world; rejoice, fire that burneth up in our heart every tare and thistle; rejoice, branch of the true vine; rejoice, light of the faithful and luminary of the faith; rejoice, uncaptured gate of Orthodoxy; rejoice, fair adornment of the Church of Christ; Rejoice, victorious martyr Boniface, crowned and all-fair!
Aglaïs did not believe in thy wondrous conversion and said to thee in anger: “Now is not the time for jesting, but for reverence, for the relics of the martyrs pour forth healing of soul and body; but may God send His angel before thee and in His compassion direct thy feet aright”; then thou wast grieved, O Boniface, and didst begin to reproach and abhor thyself, and didst go forth to fulfil her heartfelt desire, and with tears of repentance didst sing to the Holy Trinity: Alleluia.
Having heard the parable of the Gospel, how the prodigal son went to his father and said: “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before thee”, thou didst awaken repentance in thy heart like the prodigal son, and when thou camest to the city of Tarsus thou didst at once begin to seek the holy martyrs; and when thou sawest how they would not sacrifice to lifeless idols and were given over to torment by fire and sword, thou didst kiss them and serve with reverence those who beheld the truth; therefore we adorn thy memory with praises:
Rejoice, lover of the martyrs of Christ and the confessors of His law; rejoice, destroyer of sin and gainer of grace; rejoice, hater of the drunkenness that ruineth the dignity of man; rejoice, thou who leadest men to good order; rejoice, thou who quenchest the unquenchable thirst of drunkards; rejoice, swift deliverer of those enslaved to evil habits; rejoice, thou who bringest to understanding those seduced by the love of pleasure; rejoice, thou who by thy prayer healest souls wounded by the arrow of sin; rejoice, enlightener of those bereft of their senses by drink and drugs; rejoice, comforter of their most wretched and oppressed children; rejoice, restorer of many broken families; rejoice, fulfiller of our good intentions; Rejoice, victorious martyr Boniface, crowned and all-fair!
Thy heart told thee, O valiant one, that as the holy martyrs had presented their souls to God through cruel torments, so thou too, imitating them, didst desire to confirm thy love for God; and when the idolaters asked who thou wast, thou didst not fear the torments prepared, but didst answer boldly with a loud voice: “I am a Christian”; and when the judge heard thy words, they pressed thee to serve the idols, but thou didst expose the ignorance of the worshippers of false gods and didst praise the eternal and immortal King, Christ God: Alleluia.
When the lawless prepared torments of many kinds for thee, the storm could not trouble thy soul, but thou didst lift up thy hands to heaven and pray: “I thank Thee, O Lord Jesus Christ, that Thou hast made me worthy of martyrdom for Thy name”, and thou didst show clearly what power the confession of Christ hath, and how it changeth and illumineth the nature of man; therefore we offer thee a hymn:
Rejoice, preacher of the glory of God and revealer of righteousness; rejoice, thou who by thy divine struggle didst amaze the bodiless ranks; rejoice, thou who awakenest our deeply sleeping and silenced conscience; rejoice, thou who bringest to life our lukewarm faith; rejoice, healer of spiritual blindness; rejoice, thou who drivest away diseases and infirmities of many kinds; rejoice, thou who bringest dawn to our darkened mind; rejoice, thou who strengthenest a weak and wavering will; rejoice, instructor of those who drink wine greedily; rejoice, thou who bringest to understanding those carried away by every vain deed and desire; rejoice, deliverer from trials and distress of soul and body; rejoice, deliverer of those oppressed by the defilement of sin; Rejoice, victorious martyr Boniface, crowned and all-fair!
Then the executioners were commanded to hang thee upon a tree and beat thee with whips, but thou didst eagerly endure all the bitterness of the torments and didst not bend thy knees to deaf idols, but didst show an apostolic zeal, O valiant Boniface, and didst sing to the Judge of thy contest: Alleluia.
Stretched out and worn down by the wounds of thy flesh, thou didst look up to heaven and cry: “O Almighty King, grant me unshaken faith in Thee and guard my soul from the wiles of the devil”; then divine help came to thee and healed thee of all the torments; and to those who know not these wondrous deeds we recount thy praises:
Rejoice, thou who didst put off the garment of darkness and put on the blessed spiritual raiment; rejoice, thou who didst give thy flesh to wounds and preach like an apostle in thy torments; rejoice, thou who didst weaken the old sin that dwelt in thy body; rejoice, thou who didst strive in the contest with blood; rejoice, thou who by unceasing prayer drivest away the temptations of the devil; rejoice, thou who didst endure torments for the Jerusalem on high; rejoice, destroyer of the perversity of the tyrants; rejoice, thou who humblest the double-minded and unrepentant; rejoice, deliverer of the condemned from death; rejoice, deliverer from the evil devil and all his wickedness; rejoice, destroyer of all injustice and falsehood; rejoice, thou who quenchest the furnace of sorrow; Rejoice, victorious martyr Boniface, crowned and all-fair!
Thou who didst courageously endure the rending of thy flesh and the tearing out of thy nails as though in another’s flesh, and by the boldness of thy martyrdom didst show the godlessness of the idols and the tyranny of the crafty to be powerless, calm now my heart, shaken and defiled by the waves of the world, and by the doing of good works make me a sweet fragrance of Christ, that, made perfect in every good thing, I may sing to thee and call thee blessed: Alleluia.
Then the tyrants raged still more and poured molten lead into thy mouth, but thine inward parts were not burned, O much-struggling Boniface, and thou didst remain unharmed; and when they cast thee into a cauldron full of boiling pitch, it overflowed and blazed up and so burned and melted the executioners like wax before the fire; but thou, like those youths, wast not consumed, but wast shielded by an angel from on high, and didst offer thanks and glory to Christ God; entreat Him now to grant forgiveness of sins to those who keep the feast of thy holy memory and sing to thee with longing:
Rejoice, thou who didst take up the Cross of Christ and cast down the idolaters to the ground; rejoice, thou who didst endure torments and cruel blows with divine longing; rejoice, thou who castest down the insolence of the fighters against God; rejoice, thou who humblest those puffed up with pride; rejoice, giver of consolation and salvation to those sunk in wickedness; rejoice, thou who givest an example to the faint-hearted and impatient; rejoice, thou who teachest men who love the world and sin the sweetness of self-restraint; rejoice, shamer of the senseless and those enslaved to sin; rejoice, saviour of all who fervently entreat thee; rejoice, thou who bringest to life our fruitless and motionless faith; rejoice, deliverer of those perishing through the wiles of men and the guile of the enemy; rejoice, deliverer from sinful inclination; Rejoice, victorious martyr Boniface, crowned and all-fair!
When the godless had exhausted their devices of torment, for they could do the saint no harm, they were put to shame and left powerless, and they commanded the swordsmen to slay the warrior of Christ; and when they cut off thy holy head, O wondrous one, blood and milk flowed from the wound, and a countless people, emboldened by this wonder, confessed Christ and fervently glorified His invincible might: Alleluia.
By the endurance of torments thou didst cast down to the earth the evil height of the godless, and even after death thou didst receive from heaven the grace of healing those wounded by the passion of drunkenness and of driving away vain habits; plant now in the hearts of those held fast by the vice of soul-destroying passions the fear and hatred of sin and the love of virtue, that they may walk in righteousness in the way of the Lord and praise thee unceasingly:
Rejoice, imitator of the Passion of Christ, who didst take death upon thee of thine own will; rejoice, thou who by the wisdom of the spirit didst courageously endure fierce torments; rejoice, holy and spotless lamb, who didst shed thy blood for Christ; rejoice, thou who by the river of thy blood didst quench the tares of delusion; rejoice, deliverer from the many-woven devices of the enemy; rejoice, defender from the snares of Satan and from the invasion of foreigners; rejoice, thou who restrainest the unbridled and the gluttonous; rejoice, protector of inexperienced and very young youths from passionate desires; rejoice, thou who strikest terror into those who blaspheme mothers and the perverse; rejoice, shamer of liars and oath-breakers; rejoice, reprover of those who gather unjust gain and are enslaved to the love of money; rejoice, thou who didst turn many to the true faith; Rejoice, victorious martyr Boniface, crowned and all-fair!
When thy companions took up thy much-suffering remains and carried them to Rome, an angel of the Lord appeared to the blessed Aglaïs and announced: Behold, receive him who was thy servant, but is now our spiritual brother and fellow-contestant, and lay him to rest worthily, for now in the heavens he crieth with us to the Creator of all: Alleluia.
When they brought thy holy remains to Aglaïs, she went out to meet them with a litany and singing, and sought thy protection and mercy; and from then on thou didst pour forth richly all-wondrous healings and fulfil good petitions; and those who saw the grace that sprang from thy holy relics kept the day of thy martyrdom year by year and offered thee praise:
Rejoice, thou who softenest hard hearts and stoppest the mouth of all unbelievers; rejoice, shamer of those who sing foul songs and dance wickedly; rejoice, reprover of those carried away by drunkenness and gluttony; rejoice, thou who blottest out the sins of souls and the sicknesses of bodies; rejoice, thou who uprootest every sin, root and all; rejoice, thou who cuttest off evil and harmful habits; rejoice, thou who wondrously raisest up those greatly impoverished and fallen to the level of beasts; rejoice, thou who callest up out of ruinous corruption; rejoice, cleanser of defiled and much-sinning souls; rejoice, swift banisher of fierce afflictions; rejoice, deliverer from every evil deed of the devil and from the stirrings of the flesh; rejoice, protector from the attacks and harms of invisible enemies and deliverer from eternal Gehenna; Rejoice, victorious martyr Boniface, crowned and all-fair!
Then the woman, glorious in her struggle, was moved in spirit and built a fair monastery on her estate, and laid thy healing remains in the church; and she herself settled there, and by veneration and singing before thy holy relics she rose above all the passions; therefore she was numbered with the choirs of the saints, and your memory is glorified together by the Church of Christ: Alleluia.
Those who have fallen into the pit by the design of the evil enemy have found in thee a helper and deliverer, O martyr valiant in spirit; therefore those overcome by the disease of drunkenness and defiled by passion flee to thee fervently in hope of thy help; and together with them, we who seek the multitude of thy graces and signs and thy mercy utter in song:
Rejoice, teacher of the love of Christ; rejoice, hater of indecent songs and drunkenness; rejoice, abhorrer of cards and other soul-corrupting games; rejoice, thou who turnest unbelievers and depraved men; rejoice, thou who tamest men raging like beasts; rejoice, reprover of slanderers and of those who insult their parents; rejoice, shamer of those stupefied by tobacco and opium; rejoice, thou who with stern reproof strikest terror into those befuddled by wine and clouded by drugs; rejoice, thou who bridlest all inward unclean desires and passions; rejoice, thou who hinderest in the nature of man the working of ruinous sin; rejoice, lover of sensible and God-fearing men; rejoice, thou who receivest suffering souls that flee to thee; Rejoice, victorious martyr Boniface, crowned and all-fair!
As the venom of a serpent poisoneth and killeth a man, so this poison called a drug, and the greedy drinking of wine, poison the heart and soul of a man and kill the love of God and of neighbour; therefore crush the head of the serpent which pierceth them with the venom of sin, that through fasting they may come to know the sweetness of self-restraint and piously glorify Christ, King and God: Alleluia.
Who can tell the countless passions that flow as from drunkenness so from this poisoned spring? For it separateth our beloved people from every good thing; therefore we entreat thee, O martyr, deliver our neighbours from these dreadful passions that rob men of their senses, that they may come to their senses and with a voice of thanksgiving call thy valour blessed:
Rejoice, beauty of the company of martyrs, for thou didst overcome the powers of darkness and appear as a partaker of the divine sufferings; rejoice, guide of all who have gone astray, for thou didst hear the call of God; rejoice, thou who wast walled about with the weapon of the Cross, for thou didst bring to nothing the ragings of the godless; rejoice, thou who wast invincible to thy adversaries, for thou didst win the crown of incorruption; rejoice, good, kind and faithful servant, for thou wast offered as a lamb and didst cast down the might of the enemy; rejoice, thou who art fairly adorned, for thou didst ride upon a chariot of blood and ascend to the heavenly mansions; rejoice, thou who wast emboldened by the power of the Crucified, for thou didst endure the contest of martyrdom and arm thyself with the threefold might of victory; rejoice, thou who bringest forth good fruit, for thou didst put on divine grace radiantly; rejoice, mighty weapon of repentance, by which we sinners are saved; rejoice, fellow-contestant of the heavenly hosts, for thy memory shineth; rejoice, consolation and hope of grieving wives, for thou grantest their petitions; rejoice, joy of the afflicted and hope of all the despairing, for thou calmest and healest those held by an evil disease; Rejoice, victorious martyr Boniface, crowned and all-fair!
O much-suffering and all-praised Boniface, cease not to intercede for those who entreat thee, that those overcome by the ruinous disease of drunkenness may not fall into the snare of the enemy; but, since thou hast great boldness, commend to the good God those held by this passion (names), that watchfulness may awaken in their heart and they may sing to God in humility like David: Alleluia.
Say this kontakion thrice, then:
O all-glorious martyr Boniface! Entreat Christ God to forgive us our sins and not to withdraw His mercy from His children, but to give us strength and grace to serve the holy Church and the people well and as is due.
O valiant martyr Boniface, clothed in the struggle! Swift helper of those who entreat thee and in afflictions a hand that never putteth to shame, disregard not the hymn of those who hasten to thee, but look upon us with tenderness, and snatch from the depths of perdition those held by the cruel disease of drunkenness and carried away by the uncleanness of the passions (names), that the life-giving working of the Holy Spirit may touch them and they may flee the habits that rob them of mind and sense. Shelter them from the evil tricks and every wile of the enemy, and guard them day and night from the assaults of the devil. Receive the sighs and streams of tears of mothers and sisters, of honourable wives mourning over their husbands and of afflicted children, and of all right-believing Christians who entreat thee before thy icon, that our humble prayer may be offered before God, who granteth salvation of soul and body to all who entreat Him. By thy mighty power strengthen the Most Holy and Most Blessed Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Archbishop of Mtskheta-Tbilisi and Metropolitan of Bichvinta and Tskhum-Abkhazeti, our father Ilia, the most reverend metropolitans, archbishops and bishops and all the priestly and monastic orders, the commanders and the governors of cities, the Christ-loving armed forces, and our benefactors, and all Orthodox Christians. Entreat, O all-praised martyr, the sweetest Jesus whom thou didst love, to forgive us our apostasies, the destruction and defilement of churches, the murders of the servants of God, betrayal, envy and disorders, the killing of our infants in the womb and the multitude of our other sins.
O martyr Boniface, crowned with victory! As thou hast great boldness, intercede before God, that He may grant glory to the churches, honour to the clergy, good shepherding of the people to rulers, courage to soldiers, sinlessness to the laity and chastity to women; and that He may restore to us godliness, love of righteousness, many children, and mercy to widows and orphans; that He may grant us love of a holy life, hatred of unseemly deeds and contrition of heart, crowning with the saints and the inheritance of the kingdom of heaven, that we too with thee may glorify the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
It is truly meet that we should magnify thee, O Theotokos, who art ever-blessed and all-immaculate and the Mother of our God. Thee, more honourable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, who without corruption gavest birth to God the Word, the only Theotokos, we magnify in song.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Lord, have mercy. (Thrice)
O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, through the prayers of Thy most pure Mother, of the holy martyr Boniface and of all the saints, have mercy on us. Amen.
