Akathist Hymn to the Holy Great Martyr George the Victorious
Through the prayers of our holy fathers, O Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us. Amen.
Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee.
O Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, who art everywhere present and fillest all things with Thy grace, Treasury of good things and Giver of life: come and abide in us, and cleanse us from every stain, and save our souls, O Good One.
Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Thrice)
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
O Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. O Lord, deliver us and release us from our sins; O Master, pardon our iniquities; O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Thy name’s sake.
Lord, have mercy. (Thrice)
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Lord, have mercy. (Twelve times)
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
O come, let us worship God our King. O come, let us worship and fall down before Christ, our King and God. O come, let us worship and fall down before Christ Himself, our King and our God.
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy great mercy; and according to the multitude of thy compassions blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I am conscious of mine iniquity; and my sin is continually before me. Against thee only have I sinned, and done evil before thee: that thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged. For, behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother conceive me. For, behold, thou lovest truth: thou hast manifested to me the secret and hidden things of thy wisdom. Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be purified: thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow. Thou shalt cause me to hear gladness and joy: the afflicted bones shall rejoice. Turn away thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit in my inward parts. Cast me not away from thy presence; and remove not thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of thy salvation: establish me with thy directing Spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and ungodly men shall turn to thee. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation: and my tongue shall joyfully declare thy righteousness. O Lord, thou shalt open my lips; and my mouth shall declare thy praise. For if thou desiredst sacrifice, I would have given it: thou wilt not take pleasure in whole-burnt-offerings. Sacrifice to God is a broken spirit: a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, to Sion in thy good pleasure; and let the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then shalt thou be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, offering, and whole-burnt-sacrifices: then shall they offer calves upon thine altar.
We sing of thy struggles, O valiant martyr of Jesus, and magnify thy holy memory; and we who have received deliverance through thee offer thee our “Rejoice” with thanksgiving, O brave one, and fleeing to thee as to a swift helper and coming with love to thee, renowned and all-glorious in wonders, we cry fervently: Rejoice, O victorious great-martyr George!
Thou shinest with the light of martyrdom, O soldier of Christ, courageous in spirit, and adorned with the crown of the martyrs thou standest radiantly before God; entreat Him alone now to save and enlighten those who worthily sing of thy holiness, that all may know that even after death thou art alive and grantest comfort and courage to those who sing in faith:
Rejoice, chosen one of God and true and wondrous soldier of the King; rejoice, pillar of the right faith that reachest to heaven; rejoice, rule of righteousness and comfort; rejoice, wall of courage and unshakeable tower of fortitude; rejoice, vessel of good character and understanding; rejoice, thou who didst increase a hundredfold the talent given thee; rejoice, invincible fighter against raging Belial; rejoice, unbreakable sword of the army of the Kartlosians; rejoice, good labourer in the vineyard of Christ; rejoice, ungrudging fountain of living water and sea of love for mankind; rejoice, invincible champion of the Georgian people and protector of our Church; Rejoice, O victorious great-martyr George!
The ungodly turned from the light and followed the darkness, for a decree went out to all the world that men should not serve the living God but soulless idols; but thou, seeing such ungodliness and their mind that warred against Christ, for love of God didst give thy possessions to the poor and thyself as a sacrifice well-pleasing to Christ, and didst praise His might: Alleluia.
When the divine wonderworking Spirit rested upon thee, trusting in the true God, thou didst not fear the terror of the lawless king nor the torments prepared, but as a confessor of Christ didst boldly stand before the wicked assembly and expose idolatry; so now also come to us, O thou invincible in spirit, and give us understanding of our sins, that the gates of the kingdom may not be shut to those who praise thee:
Rejoice, thou who didst spring up in Cappadocia and grow well in Palestine; rejoice, thou who wast wounded by love for the Lord’s passion; rejoice, thou who wast purified by almsgiving and faith; rejoice, thou who wast enlightened by divine understanding; rejoice, thou who didst shine with the strength of courage and valour; rejoice, thou who didst take up the cross of Christ upon thy shoulders; rejoice, thou who didst spread divine teachings among thy kinsmen; rejoice, thou who like David didst cast down the foreigners; rejoice, teacher of soldierly valour; rejoice, thou who art armed with the prayer of the poor and bearest the weakness of the weak; rejoice, invincible champion of the Georgian people and protector of our Church; Rejoice, O victorious great-martyr George!
Thou didst foresee with the eye of the soul the invisible promised delights, O brave struggler, and didst count as nothing the passing delights of this age, but like thy Deliverer thou didst hasten of thine own will to the struggles, and shut up in prison, as though in a temple, thou didst sing aloud to the Creator of all: Alleluia.
Like a fragrant rose, thou didst appear with beauty of colour from among fruitless thorns, and like a candle thou wast kindled amid the darkness of senseless generations, O beautiful glory of martyrs, and thou didst openly abhor the lying idols; therefore they prepared to kill thee; but thou didst strengthen thy soul by prayer and hope in God and didst endure manifold torments in the nature of corruptible flesh; therefore we call on thee as our intercessor with God and cry to thee thus:
Rejoice, manifest guardian of the divine law; rejoice, thou who didst lay a good purpose in thy heart; rejoice, planter of the vine of the Orthodox faith; rejoice, thou who didst keep the nobility of thy soul in captivity; rejoice, thou who didst courageously take upon thee struggles and trials; rejoice, thou who didst endure reproach and scorn for Christ; rejoice, overthrower of soul-destroying teachings; rejoice, deliverer from evil fearlessness and shamelessness; rejoice, guardian from the snares of Satan and the invasion of foreigners; rejoice, smiter of guile and swift crusher of demons; rejoice, invincible champion of the Georgian people and protector of our Church; Rejoice, O victorious great-martyr George!
The foolish king would not turn from blindness and hardness, but thou with a clear and mighty voice didst confess Christ as God, didst call the idols demons and expose all that blindness of those who falsely confess as gods those that are not gods; thou didst call all to God and glorify the all-holy Trinity with the thrice-holy hymn: Alleluia.
When the tyrants heard thy words they were greatly put to shame, for thou didst revile their gods and show them to be a laughing-stock, and didst preach Christ God, crucified in the flesh, who bringeth to nought the soul-destroying delusion; and ever fenced about by prayer thou didst overthrow the insolence of the deceiver. So now also kindle in our hearts the divine fire of zeal, that by thy longing we may struggle courageously and say with fervour:
Rejoice, thou who didst smite the idolaters with the sword of reproof; rejoice, thou who by firm faith didst expose the ungodliness of tyrants; rejoice, thou who didst amaze all by unshakeable courage; rejoice, thou who didst enlighten the darkness of the idolaters with the light of the knowledge of God; rejoice, thou who bringest to life our lifeless and lukewarm faith; rejoice, comforter of widows and nourisher of orphans; rejoice, thou who makest the labourers fruitful and visitest the poor; rejoice, deliverer of many souls from captivity and bondage to tyrants; rejoice, dispeller of ailments and thou who driest up the stench of ungodliness; rejoice, blotter-out of the stain of superstition; rejoice, invincible champion of the Georgian people and protector of our Church; Rejoice, O victorious great-martyr George!
The embittered king stopped his ears like a deaf adder, for he would not hear thy voice, the voice of a wise man speaking well, and commanded that thou be hung on a tree and pierced with a spear; but the God of wonders brought his counsel to nought, and when they pierced thee, at once the point of the spear turned back like wax, and from thy flesh came forth a dew of blood; and thou, wondrously preserved, didst offer thanksgiving to God Most High and glorify His mercy: Alleluia.
Again Diocletian was filled with great wrath and commanded that thy feet be put in the stocks and a stone laid upon thy breast; but thou with a loud voice didst offer thanks and glory to God, for He had made thee worthy to bear a heavy stone upon thy breast and in thy heart an unshakeable establishing of the right faith; and Christ healed thee of thy wounds and strengthened thee, that all who beheld the great wonder might be strengthened and call thee blessed with faith as a lamb of God:
Rejoice, thou who by unceasing prayer drivest away the temptations of the devil; rejoice, thou who didst endure torments for the sake of the heavenly Jerusalem; rejoice, thou who by hope in God didst shatter the sharpened weapon of the enemy; rejoice, destroyer of the sorcery of magicians, who didst expose their craft by victory; rejoice, thou who grantest honour to the faithful and humblest the double-minded; rejoice, strength of the weak and overthrower of tyrants; rejoice, uniter of neighbours and smiter of enemies; rejoice, defender and protector of those unjustly condemned to death; rejoice, planter of honour and courage; rejoice, thou who cuttest off evil ways; rejoice, invincible champion of the Georgian people and protector of our Church; Rejoice, O victorious great-martyr George!
The very many trials and dread torments contrived by the devil’s wiles did not strike fear into the struggler, for thou didst fight them for Christ and the angels sheltered thee; but thou didst strike fear and trembling into Belial and melt him like wax before the fire that burneth the adversaries of Christ, and didst praise Him who strengthened thee: Alleluia.
Seeing thy flesh cut by bronze instruments and hacked to pieces by a sharp knife, thou, courageous in spirit, didst lift thine eyes to heaven and cry: “Look upon Thy servant, O my God, and help me, that I be not overcome by the evil one”; then at once thou didst hear the longed-for voice of Him who is without beginning: “George, I am ever with thee, and thou with Me for ever”; and again He renewed thee. Ask of Him, O blessed one, deliverance for our people from the dominion of foreigners, and mercy for those who sing to thee:
Rejoice, thou who adornest all the world with the brightness of thy miracles; rejoice, thou who didst count as nothing the madness of the adversaries; rejoice, thou who teachest a watchful and sober life; rejoice, thou who crushest the boldness of those who glorify evil; rejoice, thou who punishest with wrath the defilers of holy things and corrupters of Christianity; rejoice, protector of all who are wronged and oppressed; rejoice, thou who puttest to shame those who hate righteousness and call evil good; rejoice, thou who teachest sin-loving men the sweetness of self-restraint; rejoice, exposer of tyrannous man-hating princes and judges; rejoice, thou who hast mercy on those unjustly persecuted by them; rejoice, invincible champion of the Georgian people and protector of our Church; Rejoice, O victorious great-martyr George!
When they nailed thee to the dread wheel, the lawless thought to kill thee, but again thou wast healed by the coming of an angel of God, and renewed and radiant thou didst stand before the king and Magnentius his friend, and by appearing whole thou didst draw many to faith in the true God; and they received their end by the sword, and they rejoice and sing before Him: Alleluia.
That foolish king and his company trembled, for their torments grew weak and did not harm thee, and they began to speak to thee with flattery: “George, obey us now and we will magnify thee”; but thou didst expose their error and say: “Let your glory be your own, ye ungodly, to your perdition”; and being mercilessly beaten, thou didst exalt God with praises; entreat Him now to guard from evil trials those who hope in thee and sing with longing:
Rejoice, bell of spiritual watchfulness; rejoice, thou who didst boldly overthrow the savagery of the heathen shrines; rejoice, destroyer of the wiles of falsehood; rejoice, thou who didst courageously endure the darkness of prison and bonds; rejoice, thou who didst quench the furnace of afflictions and sorrows; rejoice, thou who didst calm trials and storms; rejoice, thou who didst stop the mouths of all the unbelieving; rejoice, thou who bringest peace to hearts shaken and defiled by the waves of the world; rejoice, candle that enlightenest the wise and burnest the foolish; rejoice, deliverer of youths from every defilement and vice; rejoice, invincible champion of the Georgian people and protector of our Church; Rejoice, O victorious great-martyr George!
As Elisha with Elijah’s mantle swiftly divided the river, so thou with the cross didst divide the rivers of the violence of unbelief, through which many peoples passed; for they saw thee not only alive and breathing but wholly unharmed in newly slaked lime blazing like fire, and in amazement they cried: “Truly great is the God of the Christians”; and thou, like the three youths in the furnace, didst courageously despise the heat of the fire and offer to God a hymn of thanksgiving: Alleluia.
The foolish king commanded that iron boots, pierced with nails, be heated greatly and put upon thy precious feet; but thou didst pray: “Let this be a deliverance for my feet, a lighted candle and the way of my course to Thee”; and the angels rejoiced at thy good struggles and healed thee of all the torments; therefore entreat God to drive from us every evil by His angels and to guard us from all trials, that we who magnify thee with praises may find rest and unfading delight:
Rejoice, treasury of the Holy Spirit; rejoice, initiate of the vision of God; rejoice, confessor of the persecuted faith; rejoice, courageous exposer of the law composed by human art; rejoice, thou who didst despise the sharpness of iron and the heat of fire; rejoice, rational adamant of patience; rejoice, pattern of the divine army; rejoice, fervent intercessor of the faithful people; rejoice, mighty avenger on the enemies of the Kartlosians; rejoice, haven of salvation for those drowning in the sea of sin; rejoice, invincible champion of the Georgian people and protector of our Church; Rejoice, O victorious great-martyr George!
Through thee God showed the ungodly a wondrous miracle, and by thy prayer raised from the tomb a man long dead and asleep in the unbelief of idolatry, who, thanking thee as a victor, cursed the soulless idols with renunciation and loudly confessed Christ as God; and Athanasius, renowned for sorcery, at once turned when the art of his sorcery was brought to nought by the power of God, and offered Him a hymn of glory: Alleluia.
When thou, great leader of the faithful, didst crush the crafty idols with the cross, the blessed Queen Alexandra was kindled with divine zeal, and separating herself from Diocletian, the disciple of the devil, she cried aloud: “Know this from now on: I am a handmaid of Christ, whom holy George preacheth”; and at once a great multitude of people believed in Christ; therefore we marvel at thy fervent love for God and offer thee the song of songs:
Rejoice, apostolic preacher of the right faith; rejoice, thou who leadest the unrepentant to repentance; rejoice, thou who softenest hearts turned to stone and hardened; rejoice, thou who didst boldly wound and slay the raging serpent; rejoice, thou who by the miracle wrought upon the ox didst turn the most blessed Glycerius to God; rejoice, thou who didst join the generals Anatolius and Protoleon to thy struggles; rejoice, thou who didst confound the idolaters with miracles; rejoice, thou who didst set Queen Alexandra on the path of truth; rejoice, thou who didst draw up to the knowledge of God souls sunk in the depth of ungodliness; rejoice, thou who blottest out the sins of souls and the sicknesses of bodies; rejoice, invincible champion of the Georgian people and protector of our Church; Rejoice, O victorious great-martyr George!
Diocletian was aghast and filled with unspeakable wrath, seeing the advance of the faith and the humbling of the soulless idols, how the sick brought to prison received wondrous healing through thee, while a countless people and a multitude of soldiers, made courageous by signs and wonders and strengthened in spirit, sang openly and plainly to Jesus, the Almighty God: Alleluia.
The devices of torment failed that merciless king, for they saw the miracles – the spear did not cut thee, the fire did not burn thee, the fear of death did not terrify thee – and he said to his people: “Behold, we have done that apostate no harm by torment, but he hath led many others astray”, and he condemned thee to be slaughtered like a sacrificial calf; but thou with a contrite heart didst entreat God that thy relics might by divine power drive away sicknesses and passions, and that thy names, remembered with faith, might heal those who sing to thee:
Rejoice, great and victorious soldier of Christ God against the unbelieving enemies; rejoice, thou who according to the teaching of the apostles drivest away the darkness of many gods; rejoice, uncaptured gate of right belief; rejoice, shield that guardest piety and sword that cuttest off impiety; rejoice, gold tried in the fire and offered to the immortal Bridegroom; rejoice, myrrh offered as ointment to the immortal King; rejoice, frankincense burned upon that divine altar; rejoice, fire that burnest in our hearts every tare and thorn; rejoice, most holy star of divine glory; rejoice, sleepless guardian and champion of the land of the Iberians; rejoice, invincible champion of the Georgian people and protector of our Church; Rejoice, O victorious great-martyr George!
Like a lamb thou didst neither cry out nor call aloud when thou wentest to the slaughter, but with sighs didst pray to God and boldly ask deliverance from every affliction and trial for those who remember thy martyrdom; then the Lord appeared to thee from a cloud and promised the good fulfilment of thy petition; and thou with joy didst bow thy neck to the sword and with a voice of thanksgiving didst sing to Him who strengthened thee: Alleluia.
Having finished thy course and passed to God, thou didst receive from on high the grace of driving out unclean spirits and trampling on enemies visible and invisible; and portrayed in icons and remembered in prayers, thou swiftly helpest those in sorrows and bonds; and the holy shrine of thy relics, like a treasury of fragrances, maketh the faithful fragrant and stirreth us to praise and sing to thee:
Rejoice, thou who by thy divine struggle didst amaze the bodiless ranks; rejoice, holy and spotless calf, who didst shed thy blood for Christ; rejoice, lamb well-pleasing to God, who didst gain the blessedness of the kingdom; rejoice, thou who didst receive from the Lord authority over unclean spirits; rejoice, thou who pourest grace-filled joy into the hearts of those who love God; rejoice, thou who bountifully grantest spiritual gifts; rejoice, thou who fillest all the world with the fragrance of thine incorrupt relics and a multitude of signs; rejoice, thou who strengthenest the weak by the grace of thy healings; rejoice, thou who drivest evil spirits from the possessed; rejoice, thou who inclinest in mercy to those who entreat thee and givest courage to those who hope in thee; rejoice, invincible champion of the Georgian people and protector of our Church; Rejoice, O victorious great-martyr George!
Wounded by the Orthodox faith, as thou didst expose the craft of idolatry, so now shelter the holy Church of Christ from union with heretics, which is a whirlpool of defilement; and cast down and trample the enemy, the destroyer of the faithful Georgians, and bring to nought the mystery of lawlessness stirred up against our people, that we may not become a laughing-stock to our enemies, but, bound in one mind by love for God and fatherland, may exalt with praises Him who crowned thee: Alleluia.
O valiant soldier of the great King, George, bless and protect us, that lying and unbelieving men who blaspheme the true God and have mammon for their worship and prayer may never be made worthy to rule over our people and plunder the Orthodox Georgians, but that leaders of the people perfect in every Georgian virtue may be multiplied for us, to care for our people in simplicity of heart and to call thy courage blessed in the blessed Georgian tongue:
Rejoice, thou who enlightenest those who hope in thee with the dawn of signs and wonders; rejoice, comforter of the sorrowful and swift banisher of grievous calamities; rejoice, deliverer of those condemned to death; rejoice, thou who stretchest out thy hand to the afflicted and ill-fated; rejoice, thou who exaltest the wise and the clear-sighted; rejoice, thou who fillest Christ-loving peoples with spiritual joy; rejoice, comforter of those darkened by the gloom of this age; rejoice, thou who blessest and hast mercy on pious rulers and armies; rejoice, thou who chastisest with wrath the princes and leaders of the people who have fallen from the faith and work lawlessness; rejoice, thou who art rightly honoured and ever remembered by all the faithful; rejoice, invincible champion of the Georgian people and protector of our Church; Rejoice, O victorious great-martyr George!
O great-martyr George, clothed in struggle! Thou art a ready helper to those in trials and hast power to free us from all passions and wiles of the enemy; now also cease not to deliver those who praise thee from the trials that surround them and from the arts of this tyrant enemy, that we may escape those bitter eternal torments and ever sing with thee to the all-holy Trinity: Alleluia.
This kontakion thrice, then
Thou shinest with the light of martyrdom, O soldier of Christ, courageous in spirit, and adorned with the crown of the martyrs thou standest radiantly before God; entreat Him alone now to save and enlighten those who worthily sing of thy holiness, that all may know that even after death thou art alive and grantest comfort and courage to those who sing in faith:
O great-martyr George, radiant in comeliness, luminary of all the world and valiant soldier of Christ God, invincible champion of the Georgian people and protector of our Church, helper of the faithful, joy and gladness of the sorrowful, deliverer of captives and intercessor before God for all who entreat and glorify thee.
O God-crowned great-martyr George! Remember us before God, and with the brightness of thy holiness look upon the inheritance of the Georgians and upon our Orthodox people dwelling in it, many times distressed by the assaults of tyrants, and strengthen it. Subdue beneath the feet of Christians the hostile enemies, visible and invisible; and as thou wast a fellow-warrior at Didgori with the God-loving King David and didst grant him a “wondrous victory” over the foreigners, so now intercede for us with Christ and ask for us that He turn away the wrath risen against us for the multitude of our sins, and like Lazarus raise our fatherland – Georgia – to its former glory, that we be not trampled by plundering foreign tribes and peoples, and that the heathen may not say: Where is their God, in whom they hope? Strengthen in their ministry the Most Holy and Most Blessed Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Archbishop of Mtskheta-Tbilisi and Metropolitan of Bichvinta and Tskhum-Abkhazeti, our father Ilia, the most reverend metropolitans, archbishops and bishops, and all the priestly and monastic orders, the commanders and governors of cities; with thy mighty power strengthen the Christ-loving armies, and our benefactors, and all Orthodox Christians.
O valiant martyr, glorious in struggle, holy George! By thy God-glorified wonders and signs free the captives, heal the weak, deliver those in trials, save those who sail upon the sea, turn sinners and bring them to Christ God, who receiveth all. Glorify and exalt in soul and body all who love the martyrs and glorify thy holy name, that we may all be made worthy of the glory of the kingdom and the magnificent radiance of God, may sing with the angels, glorify with the saints, and, saved with thee, bless the Father who crowned thee, the Son who strengthened thee and the Holy Spirit who spoke in thee, to whom befitteth all glory, honour and worship, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
O beauty of martyrs and ascetics, my schooling and my radiance, sweet in name and in deed, most fruitful labour of the King, adornment of all the righteous, great and victorious soldier of Christ God against the unbelieving enemies, holy great-martyr George, who didst preach His holy and glorious name before lawless kings and princes and didst not tremble at their threats and torments, but didst receive with eagerness through manifold torments the cup of martyrdom and didst set upon thyself the crown of incorruption from the life-giving right hand of the Most High: now in heaven thou standest with the angels before His throne by His grace, and on earth thou workest signs, wonders and glorious marvels without number. Come now and stand in our midst, and bountifully share with those who praise and sing to thee grace, mercy and forgiveness of sins, and direct us on the path of peace to the longed-for dwellings, to the kingdom of heaven, in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom befitteth all glory, honour and worship, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
It is truly meet to bless thee, O Theotokos, ever-blessed and all-spotless, and the Mother of our God. More honourable than the Cherubim and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, who without corruption gavest birth to God the Word, the very Theotokos, thee do we magnify.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen. Lord, have mercy (Thrice).
O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, through the prayers of Thy most pure Mother, of the holy great-martyr George the Victorious and of all the saints, have mercy on us. Amen.
