Akathist to the Holy Great-Martyr and Healer Panteleimon

Through the prayers of our holy fathers, O Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us.

Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee.

O Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, who art everywhere present and fillest all things with Thy grace, Treasury of good things and Giver of life: come and abide in us, and cleanse us from every stain, and save our souls, O Good One. *

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Thrice)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

O Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. O Lord, deliver us and release us from our sins; O Master, pardon our iniquities; O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Thy name’s sake.

Lord, have mercy. (Thrice)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Lord, have mercy. (Twelve times)

O come, let us worship God our King. O come, let us worship and fall down before Christ, our King and God. O come, let us worship and fall down before Christ Himself, our King and our God.

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy great mercy; and according to the multitude of thy compassions blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I am conscious of mine iniquity; and my sin is continually before me. Against thee only have I sinned, and done evil before thee: that thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged. For, behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother conceive me. For, behold, thou lovest truth: thou hast manifested to me the secret and hidden things of thy wisdom. Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be purified: thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow. Thou shalt cause me to hear gladness and joy: the afflicted bones shall rejoice. Turn away thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit in my inward parts. Cast me not away from thy presence; and remove not thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of thy salvation: establish me with thy directing Spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and ungodly men shall turn to thee. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation: and my tongue shall joyfully declare thy righteousness. O Lord, thou shalt open my lips; and my mouth shall declare thy praise. For if thou desiredst sacrifice, I would have given it: thou wilt not take pleasure in whole-burnt-offerings. Sacrifice to God is a broken spirit: a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, to Sion in thy good pleasure; and let the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then shalt thou be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, offering, and whole-burnt-sacrifices: then shall they offer calves upon thine altar.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, glory to Thee, O God; alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, glory to Thee, O God; alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, glory to Thee, O our God, glory to Thee.

O thou who wast forged in many kinds of scourgings and trials and sealed with the divine seal, who, having come to the throne of God, art winged with the angels: intercede for us before God, that, delivered from all sicknesses and attaining health of soul and body, we who sing to thee may offer thee everlasting praise: Rejoice, fair image of God-pleasing great martyrdom, made radiant by the grace from Christ of unmercenary healing, O holy healer Panteleimon!

O thou who wast revealed as an angel of earth and a man of heaven, who departed this world by valiant struggle and reached the kingdom, clothed in the beautiful purple of martyrdom and purity woven with gold: we magnify thee thus, the intercessor of our souls:

Rejoice, radiant luminary of the Orthodox Church; rejoice, beauty of the all-honourable martyrs; rejoice, teacher of God-pleasing patience; rejoice, boast of those who ask of thee; rejoice, fellow-struggler in the wondrous victory of Christ; rejoice, plant sprung up as food for our souls; rejoice, thou who in the flesh didst receive the angelic life; rejoice, partaker of the blessedness of the kingdom; rejoice, thou who wast made alive by a divine mind; rejoice, thou who by thy living mind makest the faith radiant; rejoice, thou who by thine amazing brightness layest waste the delusions of Belial; rejoice, healer of the paralysed; Rejoice, fair image of God-pleasing great martyrdom, made radiant by the grace from Christ of unmercenary healing, O holy healer Panteleimon!

When the king saw thee, a divine vessel, he loved the beauty of thy soul; but thou didst hate the vanity of the earth, and, inflamed with divine love and longing for the martyr’s crown, thou wast given wings as a singer: Alleluia.

O soldier of Christ, enriched with knowledge from above, who by the declaring of the divine word didst amaze King Maximian, to thee, who hast boldness before Christ, we speak thus:

Rejoice, thou who standest aright in the faith; rejoice, shoot of true godliness; rejoice, breaker of the devices of the crafty one; rejoice, reprover of lawlessness; rejoice, overthrower of deluding idols; rejoice, thou who drivest away the assembly of the godless; rejoice, thou who gainest the incorruptible treasure; rejoice, thou who art blessed with the angels; rejoice, for thou exultest with the martyrs; rejoice, thou who exposest Belial; rejoice, for thou didst not share in the works of the godless; rejoice, for by thy courage Maximian is overcome; Rejoice, fair image of God-pleasing great martyrdom, made radiant by the grace from Christ of unmercenary healing, O holy healer Panteleimon!

Beheaded by the sword and crowned by great martyrdom, filled with that amazing power of the spirit, thou didst mock the madness of thine adversary and count as nothing manifold torments, crying to God: Alleluia.

We who have gained thy severed head and treasure that beautiful gain, a wealth that cannot be stolen, from which Christ poureth out for us abundant healing, cry to thee thus:

Rejoice, sleepless guardian of Christians; rejoice, thou who makest our steps straight; rejoice, quencher of godlessness; rejoice, teaching pattern of patience in torment; rejoice, boast of the Orthodox; rejoice, stream of the grace of healings; rejoice, treasury of virtues; rejoice, fragrant spiritual myrrh; rejoice, thou who art quick to hear those who ask of thee; rejoice, thou who openest blinded eyes; rejoice, thou who makest the lame walk straight; rejoice, comforter of the sick; Rejoice, fair image of God-pleasing great martyrdom, made radiant by the grace from Christ of unmercenary healing, O holy healer Panteleimon!

Maximian, maddened by idolatry, heard from physicians swollen with envy against thee that by an art from Christ thou didst heal every infirmity; but we cry to God, who granted thee that manifest power of working wonders: Alleluia.

O thou who wast moved by divine compassion for the sick, the people of Nicomedia, learning of thine amazing unmercenary service, fled to thee, and brought to life by faith in the God-chosen physician and returned from sicknesses to health, they sang to thee thus:

Rejoice, thou who wast anointed with divine grace; rejoice, blessed temple of the Lord; rejoice, amazing radiance of the godly; rejoice, thou who wast made wise above all the learned; rejoice, thou who showest fair thoughts in our minds; rejoice, thou who makest the mercies of God flow down upon us; rejoice, swift helper of the tormented; rejoice, haven of the storm-tossed; rejoice, wise teacher of the erring; rejoice, unmercenary physician of the sick; rejoice, holy font for our infirmities; rejoice, thou who raisest from beds of pain those who ask of thee; Rejoice, fair image of God-pleasing great martyrdom, made radiant by the grace from Christ of unmercenary healing, O holy healer Panteleimon!

The Lord called thee by name, a youth burning with the search for truth, through Hermolaus; and thou, a partaker of noetic light, didst raise a child killed by an adder, who, brought back to life by the mercy of God, cried: Alleluia.

O thou who openest blinded eyes, who didst lead thy father according to the flesh out of spiritual darkness into light, we magnify thee thus, the wonderworking and skilled physician:

Rejoice, burning of the fire of faith; rejoice, radiant image of obedience; rejoice, thou who didst forsake the glory of this passing world; rejoice, thou who wast inflamed with longing for the glory that passeth not; rejoice, thou who didst follow the thorny path; rejoice, thou who by that thorny path didst go up into heaven; rejoice, thou who wast crucified with Christ; rejoice, crusher of the passions; rejoice, thou who art without stain; rejoice, joy of those who flee to thee; rejoice, thou whom thy mother Eubula trained towards God; rejoice, thou who by giving up the world didst gain Christ; Rejoice, fair image of God-pleasing great martyrdom, made radiant by the grace from Christ of unmercenary healing, O holy healer Panteleimon!

The blind man whose eyes thou didst open became, by his God-inspired mind, like the blessed blind man of the Gospel, and as a reprover of the lawless king and a rejecter of the false gods of the heathen, by confessing the divine truth he went up to heaven, singing: Alleluia.

O thou who didst stand before the judgement seat of the godless king and preach Christ, who raiseth the dead and freeth from every sickness, amazed at thy confession we speak thus:

Rejoice, resounding instrument of the voice of goodness; rejoice, unsilenced lips of Christ; rejoice, most exalted theologian; rejoice, radiant image of piety; rejoice, organ of the Lord; rejoice, valiant preacher of Orthodoxy; rejoice, thou who wast revealed as a wonderworker before thy death; rejoice, beholder of the glory of Christ; rejoice, thou who art quick to hear our entreaties; rejoice, ungrudging outpouring of mercies; rejoice, thou who pleasest the Creator; rejoice, beauty of creation; Rejoice, fair image of God-pleasing great martyrdom, made radiant by the grace from Christ of unmercenary healing, O holy healer Panteleimon!

The Holy Spirit made thy soul fragrant, O holy one, and after death the fragrance of thy body too driveth away the stench of the passions: Alleluia.

O thou who by healing the sick didst turn many hearts to Christ, surrounded by trials from priests inflamed with envy and cast into the fire of bodily torment, we sing to thee thus:

Rejoice, thou who wast rescued from the threshing-floors of temptations; rejoice, thou who runnest towards heaven; rejoice, skilled vanquisher of Belial; rejoice, cleanser of living souls from idols; rejoice, balance that slayest the deceiver; rejoice, spiritual sword; rejoice, weapon of Christians; rejoice, shelter of the faithful; rejoice, peace of our souls; rejoice, healer of our bodies; rejoice, thou who resoundest in hymns; rejoice, thou whose help they implore; Rejoice, fair image of God-pleasing great martyrdom, made radiant by the grace from Christ of unmercenary healing, O holy healer Panteleimon!

To thee, a Christian held fast in torments, the Lord appeared in the likeness of Hermolaus and delivered thee in peace from deadly tortures: Alleluia.

O now in heaven a partaker in the ineffable glory of God, who by the light of Christ enlightenest those who ask of thee, be an intercessor for those who magnify thee thus:

Rejoice, thou who wast made radiant by divine wisdom; rejoice, stillness of lofty minds; rejoice, joy of God-fearing souls; rejoice, pearl of Christ; rejoice, thou who wast cleansed in soul and body; rejoice, thou who restest in heaven; rejoice, thou who art joined to the inn of the saved; rejoice, beholder of the light of the thrice-radiant Trinity; rejoice, enlightener of those who ask of thee in faith; rejoice, comforter of the sorrowful; rejoice, thou who joinest great help to sicknesses; rejoice, thou through whom we are raised from beds of infirmity; Rejoice, fair image of God-pleasing great martyrdom, made radiant by the grace from Christ of unmercenary healing, O holy healer Panteleimon!

O thou adorned with virtues of many kinds, who didst amaze all creation by the manner of an angelic life, we sing to thee: Alleluia.

The sweet sounds of thy struggles rise up to heaven, before which the instruments of those who praise thee fall silent, speaking thus:

Rejoice, advocate of multitudes; rejoice, sight blessed even for the angels; rejoice, image of amazing light; rejoice, sentence of confession; rejoice, invincible soldier of the King of all; rejoice, crusher of the dark powers; rejoice, thou who sheddest joy by that divine victory; rejoice, fellow-singer with the Cherubim and Seraphim; rejoice, plant of grace; rejoice, abundance of the fruits of spiritual struggle; rejoice, for thou wast made ready to be scourged for Christ; rejoice, for thou didst love the saving martyrdom; rejoice, thou who didst shed thy blood for God; Rejoice, fair image of God-pleasing great martyrdom, made radiant by the grace from Christ of unmercenary healing, O holy healer Panteleimon!

O thou who didst keep well the image of God and pourest out much help for those who ask of thee, grant us that power of glorification that cometh from Christ, that we may sing to thee: Alleluia.

O amazing martyr, who didst tame the raging of wild beasts and break the dread engines of thy tortures, we magnify thee thus, the spiritual athlete of God:

Rejoice, precious lamb; rejoice, amazing divine fragrance; rejoice, thou who didst attain the crown of a martyr of Christ; rejoice, thou who by the mercy of God wast cooled in boiling pitch; rejoice, thou who wast rescued unharmed from the waves of the raging sea; rejoice, thou who by the fiery ladder of martyrdom didst go up into heaven; rejoice, spiritual luminary; rejoice, knower of the noetic world; rejoice, beautiful dwelling of the all-holy Spirit; rejoice, divine vessel of spiritual and bodily ointment; rejoice, treasury of holiness; rejoice, good disciple of the merciful God; Rejoice, fair image of God-pleasing great martyrdom, made radiant by the grace from Christ of unmercenary healing, O holy healer Panteleimon!

O God-pleasing lamb, from whom milk flowed instead of blood, while at the place of the beheading of thy holy head an olive tree bore the wondrous fruit of healing, we cry to thee: Alleluia.

O thou who leadest the heathen sitting in darkness into the light and guidest them to God, establish us in the light of the commandments, who sing thus:

Rejoice, precious bread set upon the Lord’s table; rejoice, harpist of the glory of the kingdom; rejoice, praiser of the uncreated Light; rejoice, fellow-chorister with the angels; rejoice, praiser of the goodness of God; rejoice, helper of the distressed; rejoice, thou who dispellest our pains; rejoice, healer of infirmities; rejoice, thou who washest away stains; rejoice, thou who drivest away spiritual ignorance; rejoice, thou who wast enriched with knowledge from above; rejoice, thou who hast made our minds radiant too; Rejoice, fair image of God-pleasing great martyrdom, made radiant by the grace from Christ of unmercenary healing, O holy healer Panteleimon!

O thou who wast inflamed with the love of God, fountain of healings, unmercenary and thrice-blessed physician, be an intercessor for those who ask of thee: Alleluia.

O thou who by the endurance of torments shinest upon our spiritual straits, we offer thee thanksgiving and veneration, praising thee thus with these small praises:

Rejoice, thou who resoundest with the song of holy worship; rejoice, sword of Christ that slayest lawlessness; rejoice, quencher of the furnace of temptations; rejoice, thou who by the wounding of the flesh didst attain spiritual health; rejoice, thou who by shedding thine innocent blood didst crush the sacrifices to idols; rejoice, balance of the Church weighed against Belial; rejoice, pillar of light; rejoice, thou who art now adorned with incorruption; rejoice, glory of creatures; rejoice, thou who art made like the uncreated image; rejoice, fellow-banqueter with Christ; rejoice, beholder of the face of God; Rejoice, fair image of God-pleasing great martyrdom, made radiant by the grace from Christ of unmercenary healing, O holy healer Panteleimon!

O holy healer Panteleimon, forged in many kinds of scourgings and trials, as thou dost ungrudgingly receive the cry of all, accept this our hymn too, offered to thee according to our strength; and delivered from sicknesses of soul and body, rescue us from the devices of Belial, that we may attain the kingdom of heaven, singing thus: Alleluia.

This kontakion is read thrice.

It is truly meet that we should magnify thee, O Theotokos, who art ever-blessed and all-immaculate and the Mother of our God. Thee, more honourable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, who without corruption gavest birth to God the Word, the only Theotokos, we magnify in song.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Lord, have mercy. (Thrice)

O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, through the prayers of Thy most pure Mother, of our venerable and God-bearing fathers and of all Thy saints, have mercy on us. Amen.
