Akathist to the Didube Icon of the Mother of God
O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, through the prayers of Thy most pure Mother and of all the saints, have mercy on us. Amen.
Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee.
O Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, who art everywhere present and fillest all things with Thy grace, Treasury of good things and Giver of life: come and abide in us, and cleanse us from every stain, and save our souls, O Good One.
Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Thrice)
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
O Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. O Lord, deliver us and release us from our sins; O Master, pardon our iniquities; O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Thy name’s sake.
Lord, have mercy. (Thrice)
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy great mercy; and according to the multitude of thy compassions blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I am conscious of mine iniquity; and my sin is continually before me. Against thee only have I sinned, and done evil before thee: that thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged. For, behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother conceive me. For, behold, thou lovest truth: thou hast manifested to me the secret and hidden things of thy wisdom. Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be purified: thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow. Thou shalt cause me to hear gladness and joy: the afflicted bones shall rejoice. Turn away thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit in my inward parts. Cast me not away from thy presence; and remove not thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of thy salvation: establish me with thy directing Spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and ungodly men shall turn to thee. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation: and my tongue shall joyfully declare thy righteousness. O Lord, thou shalt open my lips; and my mouth shall declare thy praise. For if thou desiredst sacrifice, I would have given it: thou wilt not take pleasure in whole-burnt-offerings. Sacrifice to God is a broken spirit: a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, to Sion in thy good pleasure; and let the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then shalt thou be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, offering, and whole-burnt-sacrifices: then shall they offer calves upon thine altar.
O Virgin, wider than the heavens and higher than the Cherubim, O Theotokos, thou art the hope and boast of us the faithful, who kiss thine icon and bring thee as intercessor to thy Son and the God of us all, that He may shelter us from harm of soul and body and make us worthy to offer the hymn as is fitting: Rejoice, O all-holy Theotokos of Didube, Champion and Intercessor of the Georgian people!
The choir of the bodiless ones of heaven singeth to thee, O Mother of Christ, as higher than all principalities and powers, and with them every tongue of men praiseth thee; and we come with faith to thy wonderworking icon and entreat thee, hoping in thine almighty intercession: be merciful to us and rescue from every affliction and from the snares of the enemy us who have been moved to praise thee and sing to thee according to our strength:
Rejoice, holy Mother of Jesus, the Son of God; rejoice, gate of heaven and throne of the King; rejoice, budding rod of Aaron; rejoice, thou who containest God and bearest the Sun of righteousness; rejoice, dwelling of truth and rule of faith; rejoice, chariot of holiness and ladder of God’s descent; rejoice, thou who unsearchably gavest birth to the Creator of the angels; rejoice, cause of Adam’s deliverance and deliverer from Eve’s sorrow; rejoice, hope of the resurrection of all and surety of eternal life; rejoice, protectress and champion of the people of Kartlos; rejoice, intercessor for and guardian of the inheritance of our fatherland; rejoice, invincible wall and guardian of the city of Tbilisi; Rejoice, O all-holy Theotokos of Didube, Champion and Intercessor of the Georgian people!
O most wondrous miracle! As a shepherd was keeping his flock outside Tbilisi, in the neighbourhood of Didube, an angel appeared to him in his sleep and told him where the icon of the all-holy Theotokos lay; and at once he understood that the icon had been given them as a pledge of mercy and salvation, and filled with joy he gave thanks and sang to Christ, the only Lover of mankind: Alleluia.
Chosen out of many for the finding of thy precious icon, the shepherd told his vision to the clergy and the people; and on the next day, a Monday, when they sought thy most precious icon in the neighbourhood of Didube, they were amazed, for thou didst hold in thy right hand the royal sceptre as a weapon, while thy Son and God held the golden orb adorned with the cross as a sign of sovereign rule; and raising thine icon with litany and hymns they set it in the church that lay nearby, and sang to thee and called thee blessed as the Champion and true Sovereign of our people:
Rejoice, Bride unwedded, royal throne of the Father and dwelling of the Holy Spirit; rejoice, spiritual city of the great King; rejoice, tabernacle wider than heaven and earth; rejoice, higher than the Cherubim, who bearest the Creator; rejoice, only blessed one, dwelling of holiness; rejoice, Virgin who gavest birth to Emmanuel, God; rejoice, Mother of the Builder of the kingdom and of paradise and the Crusher of hell; rejoice, foundation of the divine law; rejoice, God-given Sovereign of the Georgian race; rejoice, strengthener of the sceptre of the Bagratids; rejoice, unshakeable tower of the holy Church of Christ; rejoice, quiet haven, intercessor and champion of all the world; Rejoice, O all-holy Theotokos of Didube, Champion and Intercessor of the Georgian people!
When thy wondrous icon was given to the Georgians, the assemblies of the fathers and their flocks hastened to see and venerate it, and those held by sicknesses fell down and said: Have mercy on us, O Queen; and they were swiftly healed and gave thanks to Jesus, thy Son and God. Cease not, O Virgin, to entreat Him, that He may deliver us from our sins and make us worthy to inherit His kingdom and ever to sing: Alleluia.
When a man born blind heard of the multitude of miracles, his heart was filled with hope and he longed to venerate the icon, but he found no guide by whom he might be made worthy to draw near to that wondrous holy thing; yet on bended knees and with tears he prayed: “Be my intercessor, O Mother of God, before thy Son, that with His light He may enlighten me also, darkened by sin, and make me worthy to see thine icon and to sing before it”:
Rejoice, rod of the kingdom, sprung from the root of David; rejoice, thou who wast proclaimed Theotokos by the patriarchs; rejoice, Virgin sprung from a barren woman and exalted above the Cherubim; rejoice, mountain of God, lifted higher than the heavens; rejoice, thou who wast called Mother of light by Solomon in the Song of Songs; rejoice, throne of fire and ladder reaching to heaven; rejoice, royal temple built up; rejoice, flower that hast blossomed unfading; rejoice, Mother unwedded, who didst conceive in virginity and without seed gavest birth to the King of heaven; rejoice, Bride untouched by the pains of motherhood; rejoice, thou who through thy Son art glorified by every creature of heaven and earth; rejoice, thou who art praised by all the tribes of the race of Adam; Rejoice, O all-holy Theotokos of Didube, Champion and Intercessor of the Georgian people!
Showing thy swift help to that man wholly deprived of light, thou didst at once open his eyes; and filled with joy when he beheld the light of day, he hastened to venerate the icon and offered thee his “Rejoice”; and we, knowing the multitude of thy mercies, flee to thee as to our intercessor before thy Son and cease not to glorify Him: Alleluia.
Looking with tenderness upon the people allotted to thee, thou didst wondrously reveal thy holy image to the shepherd, that in thy stead thine icon might dwell as the guardian of the Iberians, and thou didst open the blinded eyes of the blind man; like him, open the eyes of our souls also, who stand before thine icon, that we may not live after the manner of the ungodly, but rejoice in thee and, as thou art the Theotokos, rightly call thee blessed:
Rejoice, Mother of God the Creator of all, unwedded, knowing not wedlock; rejoice, thou who hast made angels and men one flock; rejoice, eternal Queen and unfailing providence; rejoice, ark of the old and the new law, enthroned in the royal city; rejoice, branch of the new vine, who hast brought forth the cluster of blessing; rejoice, thou who showest forth divine love; rejoice, thou who by the glory of signs and wonders bringest to life our barren and lukewarm faith; rejoice, thou who gladdenest the grieving and afflicted; rejoice, unquenchable candle, who enlightenest those who sit in darkness and despair; rejoice, thou who freest from prisons and bonds those who commit themselves to thee; rejoice, thou who givest courage to those seized by the sleep of sloth; rejoice, thou who renewest our nature grown old through sin; Rejoice, O all-holy Theotokos of Didube, Champion and Intercessor of the Georgian people!
Then many came to pray and asked for healing: the blind received their sight and beheld and gazed upon thy beautiful face, the deaf heard, the lame walked and lepers were cleansed, and those held by unclean spirits were healed, and all glorified God with joy: Alleluia.
The Georgians, loving this thine icon, raised in its honour a shrine for prayer, and they cherished and magnified it as their wall, intercessor and protectress; so now we too, knowing thy precious wonders, a lawful people, rejoice together and, wholly united as thy flock, confess thee Theotokos and cry to thee in song:
Rejoice, thou who teachest the veneration of holy icons; rejoice, thou who mercifully acceptest the prayer offered to thee with love and longing; rejoice, giver of health to the sick; rejoice, bestower of healing on the wounded and paralysed; rejoice, thou who bringest unbelieving men to faith; rejoice, thou who blessest all honourable spouses; rejoice, thou who givest rest to the weary and hast mercy on the oppressed; rejoice, fellow-champion and protectress of those who desire the salvation of the soul; rejoice, thou who deliverest from the snares of Satan and the invasion of foreigners; rejoice, thou who restorest childbearing to the barren; rejoice, true Mother, who invisibly bringest up infants left motherless; rejoice, thou who shelterest spotless maidens and youths from passionate desires; Rejoice, O all-holy Theotokos of Didube, Champion and Intercessor of the Georgian people!
Seeing the dread power of thine icon, the multitude of the faithful and the countless miracles wrought by thy grace, they built there a beautiful church, and having placed thy holy icon in it, O spotless Mary, they appointed the feast of the icon on a Monday; by it thou hast sheltered us who flee in soul and body beneath its shadow and hast made us worthy to sing to God: Alleluia.
Thy grace shone forth in the church of Didube, for when thine icon, made radiant in its beauty, was enthroned in the house of God, hierarchs and priests with the people kept festival with hymns and spiritual songs; and the holy Queen Tamar hastened to that church, which is named after thy Nativity, and fleeing to it as to a quiet haven she praised thee and extolled thee with the song of songs:
Rejoice, Bride of the immortal Bridegroom, who didst incorruptibly bear the Child who is before the ages; rejoice, thou who remainedst a virgin and showest forth His Godhead; rejoice, daughter of David, who gavest birth to the Prince of peace; rejoice, thou who hast loosed the curse of Eve’s disobedience and granted blessing; rejoice, Queen who hast united heaven and earth; rejoice, thou who art called the Bride of the heavenly Bridegroom and the cause of our salvation; rejoice, life-giving fountain of inexhaustible grace; rejoice, precious treasury of the priceless pearl; rejoice, divine vine bearing the cluster of life; rejoice, place of holiness and wheat-bearing land, giver of the food of immortality; rejoice, morning star that enlightenest all the world; rejoice, glory and adornment of the race of Kartlos; Rejoice, O all-holy Theotokos of Didube, Champion and Intercessor of the Georgian people!
Behold, truly wondrous is the mercy of the Mother of God, for such a manifest miracle was shown through her motherly love for the people allotted to her, when she granted her icon as a radiant adornment to our Christ-loving people; and we, hearing this, fall down in faith beneath her protection and sing in spirit and in truth to Jesus our Deliverer: Alleluia.
The kings of the line of Kartlos honoured thine icon as the strength of their kingdom, and building their palaces on the field of Didube, they gathered their armies there and commended them to thee as the Champion of the Georgian people; and behold, our beloved people is again surrounded by a multitude of trials and afflictions, but thou knowest our weakness: give us strength, courage and wisdom to overthrow the devices of the enemy, that I may sing to thee: O Mother of God, glory to thy protection:
Rejoice, thou who ever pourest forth motherly sweetness from the holy icons; rejoice, thou who exaltest the Georgian race with surpassing joy; rejoice, hope of the lost and thou who stretchest out a hand to the fallen; rejoice, thou who bridlest vain impulses; rejoice, thou who teachest women spiritual strength and chastity; rejoice, healer of diseases of the eyes; rejoice, seeker of the erring and thou who bringest the dead to life; rejoice, thou who freest from the insatiable thirst of love of money; rejoice, thou who makest the darkness of sin and ignorance bright; rejoice, thou who swiftly bringest dawn to distressed souls; rejoice, thou who rescuest from the turmoil and warfare of the world; rejoice, thou who awakenest our conscience, deeply asleep and fallen silent; Rejoice, O all-holy Theotokos of Didube, Champion and Intercessor of the Georgian people!
O thy providence for us, O Queen! For thou didst wondrously grant thine icon to a people clothed with Christ, that through thee it might be delivered from every affliction and harm; now also cease not to intercede for us, and entreat Almighty God to grant us as ruler and leader a faithful and righteous shepherd, like David for Israel, that he may govern with love those entrusted to him and glorify God with a pure heart: Alleluia.
As this icon shone upon our forebears more brightly than the sun with the gifts of thy help, so now bless and sanctify with the radiance of thy wonderworking icon us who ever fall down before thy motherly grace and help, that our repentance may loose the trial of ruin, as with the Ninevites, and all we faithful may call thee blessed as our very own protectress:
Rejoice, icon that portrayest all the beauty of heavenly virginity; rejoice, radiant sun that sheddest and enlightenest the faithful with the sweet light of victory; rejoice, thou who makest the church of Didube radiant by the glory of thy wonders; rejoice, thou who adornest the priesthood with holiness; rejoice, thou who exaltest the kingdom in piety; rejoice, thou who makest the authorities wise with the love of God; rejoice, thou who strengthenest the Georgian armies with courage; rejoice, thou who drivest evil spirits from the possessed; rejoice, thou who washest those held by the stain of sin; rejoice, thou who makest the labourers fruitful and feedest the hungry; rejoice, deliverer from every device of the devil; rejoice, thou who inclinest in mercy to those who entreat thee and givest courage to those who trust in thee; Rejoice, O all-holy Theotokos of Didube, Champion and Intercessor of the Georgian people!
As our fathers and forefathers rejoiced in godliness over thy most wondrous icon, so we too rejoice through it and praise thy memory, O incorrupt one; but give us an understanding and wise heart to discern good and evil, and grant us the honour of worthiness and the grace of mercy, that we may never stray from the path of righteousness and truth, but may pass well along the way of this transient life and with fear and trembling sing to the Saviour of our souls: Alleluia.
Behold, we set all our hope on thee, O blessed among women, O Theotokos, for the grace of thy wonderworking icon healeth diseases of every kind and driveth away unclean spirits, and to those who fall down before it thou grantest healing of soul and body, that with joy we may call thee blessed and offer thee a hymn of thanksgiving:
Rejoice, wider than the heavens and higher than the worlds; rejoice, loftier than the many-eyed Cherubim; rejoice, more exalted than the six-winged Seraphim; rejoice, Mother and Queen of all creation; rejoice, gift and boast of angels and men; rejoice, joy of the living and the dead; rejoice, firm wall of the clergy that keep good watch over themselves; rejoice, thou who bountifully crownest the Orthodox; rejoice, invincible weapon of kings and princes; rejoice, strength and courage of the armed hosts; rejoice, champion given from heaven and hope of all the heavy laden; rejoice, thou who by thy grace art the unslumbering guardian and warden of the borders of Iberia; Rejoice, O all-holy Theotokos of Didube, Champion and Intercessor of the Georgian people!
Remembering thy birth from the aged Joachim and the barren Anna, we keep this feast with zeal, and drawing near with reverence to offer our humble entreaties, we venerate thine icon and ask for help and mercy, that we may know in truth the Holy Trinity, uncircumscribed and incomprehensible to the powers of heaven, and cry: “Glory to God in the highest”: Alleluia.
Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin, holy Mary, for thou didst treasure up thy divinely beautiful icon for the people allotted to thee, as the hope and advocate of this royal city, and hast made us worthy to fall down before it; again it guardeth with its shelter all who dwell there; therefore we hasten to thy dwelling, that we may fervently embrace that holy thing and cry with longing:
Rejoice, thou who delightest us all by the sight of thy radiant icon; rejoice, thou who plantest hope and divine love in our hearts; rejoice, thou who givest thirsting souls to drink from the fountain of incorruption and joy; rejoice, thou who shelterest those who dwell in thy portion from enemies visible and invisible; rejoice, thou who wondrously feedest those pressed by famine; rejoice, thou who quenchest the delusion of superstition; rejoice, thou who restrainest the impious and destroyest the sorcery of magicians; rejoice, thou who through God-wise ascetics pastorest thy flock well; rejoice, deliverer from the assault of enemies invisible and visible; rejoice, thou who humblest the high and proud and raisest up the fallen; rejoice, thou who lightenest the torment of the sorrowful; rejoice, healer of the grievously wounded; Rejoice, O all-holy Theotokos of Didube, Champion and Intercessor of the Georgian people!
Christ thy Son looked upon the Georgian people, which beareth His robe, and granted it His unchanging image, imprinted on a cloth, as the strength, power and glory of this kingdom; and thou didst not forget thy promise which thou didst pledge to the Iberians, and didst grant us thine icon to deliver us from all passions and from the invasions of the enemy; therefore we fall down beneath thy protection and give glory to our God, the Saviour and Deliverer of the faithful: Alleluia.
We thine unworthy servants, giving thanks, bless thee, thank thee, sing to thee and glorify thy compassion, for thou art the great helper of the Georgian race, and this thine icon again worketh healings and miracles without fail; and wherever they call upon thee and entreat thee in time of sickness and trial, thou swiftly grantest healing and help; therefore we flee to thine intercession and cry with longing:
Rejoice, guide of life, giver of blessing; rejoice, thou who blessest pious rulers and armies; rejoice, thou who hast mercy on those who labour for faith and fatherland; rejoice, thou who exposest those who have turned from the rule of God and seek the rule of men; rejoice, thou who lovest those whose hearts burn with love for their native land; rejoice, thou who makest tremble those who raise their hand against Georgia; rejoice, thou who replacest strife and enmity among those of one faith with love and peace; rejoice, thou who chastisest with wrath those who resist the truth and submit to falsehood; rejoice, thou who humblest violent rulers that hate mankind and defendest those they oppress; rejoice, thou who overthrowest fierce deceivers and those who craftily destroy their own kin; rejoice, thou who humblest unjust and bribe-taking judges; rejoice, thou who crushest those who war against our blessed language and are stirred up to uproot it; Rejoice, O all-holy Theotokos of Didube, Champion and Intercessor of the Georgian people!
Thy Didube icon shineth with glorious miracles and by grace enlighteneth those who flee to it in faith; and we fall down with longing before this holy thing as before a sleepless guardian and deliverer from afflictions, and we entreat thee: deliver us from bondage to evil demons and from the wiles of men, that we may call thee blessed with joy and offer thanksgiving to God: Alleluia.
Come, all ye faithful, into this holy church of the Nativity of the Theotokos, truly a tabernacle of the glory of God, which was raised for the Didube icon, and let us fall down before her motherly grace: “O all-good Queen, cast down those who assail and oppose Christianity, and shelter the land of Iberia from heresy and an alien law, and its dwellers from every misfortune, that, kept unharmed, we may boast and say according to our strength:
Rejoice, thou who hast granted thy holy robe to our people as strength and a bond of firmness; rejoice, thou who receivest the penitent and seekest the lost; rejoice, thou who offerest repentance and obtainest forgiveness of sins; rejoice, giver of light and blessing; rejoice, bestower of every good thing and joy; rejoice, thou who tamest men raging like beasts; rejoice, thou who breakest the horn of the unbelievers and puttest the wicked and the slothful to shame; rejoice, thou who teachest divine zeal and reverence; rejoice, thou who grantest comfort and salvation to the Georgians scattered over all the earth; rejoice, thou who by motherly intercession rescuest many from perdition; rejoice, thou who askest of the Lord the sweetness of piety for the Georgian people; rejoice, thou who bringest to nothing the designs of senseless men who have risen against us; Rejoice, O all-holy Theotokos of Didube, Champion and Intercessor of the Georgian people!
O Mary, all-holy Virgin of Didube and Mother of Light, look down upon us who with hymns and spiritual songs venerate thy wondrous icon, and with entreaty we ask of thee: deliver us from the passions, from afflictions and straits, and bring to nothing the assaults of our enemies and adversaries invisible and visible, that all the Orthodox may prosper and our prayer be offered before God: Alleluia.
This kontakion thrice, then
The choir of the bodiless ones of heaven singeth to thee, O Mother of Christ, as higher than all principalities and powers, and with them every tongue of men praiseth thee; and we come with faith to thy wonderworking icon and entreat thee, hoping in thine almighty intercession: be merciful to us and rescue from every affliction and from the snares of the enemy us who have been moved to praise thee and sing to thee according to our strength:
O all-merciful Queen, Theotokos of Didube, higher than the heavens and brighter than the sun, Bride, Handmaid and Mother of the Deliverer, protectress and champion of the Georgian people and invincible Champion of Georgia!
O Queen, Mother of God the Lover of mankind, all-spotless Virgin Mary! We have this thy holy icon of Didube, adorned in many ways with a purple robe and a veil woven with gold, as truly an unmercenary physician of bodies and healer of souls, and with uplifted hands we entreat thee before it: be for us sinners a fervent intercessor before thy Son, that He may bring to nothing the dread devices of those who labour at wicked and vain things to the harm of our people, chosen by thee as thine own, and may keep us from every affliction and temptation, renew again our faith and grant us unfailing love for God, for our neighbour and for our fatherland. By thy mighty power strengthen the Most Holy and Most Blessed Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Archbishop of Mtskheta-Tbilisi and Metropolitan of Bichvinta and Tskhum-Abkhazeti, our father Ilia, and the most reverend metropolitans, archbishops and bishops, and all the priestly and monastic orders, the pious, the commanders and governors of cities, and all the Christ-loving army and our benefactors, and all Orthodox Christians.
O blessed among women, our boast, O Theotokos, entreat thy Son, the Saviour of the world, to grant glory to the churches, honour to the clergy, good shepherding of the people to rulers, courage to soldiers, sinlessness to the laity and chastity to women, and to restore to us godliness, love of righteousness, many children, and mercy towards widows and orphans. May He grant us love for a life of holiness, hatred of unseemly deeds and contrition of heart, crowns with the saints and the inheritance of the kingdom of heaven, that we too with thee may glorify the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
It is truly meet to bless thee, O Theotokos, ever-blessed and all-spotless, and the Mother of our God. More honourable than the Cherubim and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, who without corruption gavest birth to God the Word, the very Theotokos, thee do we magnify.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Lord, have mercy. (Thrice)
O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, through the prayers of Thy most pure Mother and of all the saints, have mercy on us. Amen.
