Akathist to the Holy Great-Martyrs David and Constantine, Princes of Argveti
Through the prayers of our holy fathers, O Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us. Amen.
Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee.
O Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, who art everywhere present and fillest all things with Thy grace, Treasury of good things and Giver of life: come and abide in us, and cleanse us from every stain, and save our souls, O Good One.
Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Thrice)
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
O Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. O Lord, deliver us and release us from our sins; O Master, pardon our iniquities; O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Thy name’s sake.
Lord, have mercy. (Thrice)
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Priest: For Thine is the kingdom…
Lord, have mercy. (Twelve times)
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
O come, let us worship God our King. O come, let us worship and fall down before Christ, our King and God. O come, let us worship and fall down before Christ Himself, our King and our God.
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy great mercy; and according to the multitude of thy compassions blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I am conscious of mine iniquity; and my sin is continually before me. Against thee only have I sinned, and done evil before thee: that thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged. For, behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother conceive me. For, behold, thou lovest truth: thou hast manifested to me the secret and hidden things of thy wisdom. Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be purified: thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow. Thou shalt cause me to hear gladness and joy: the afflicted bones shall rejoice. Turn away thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit in my inward parts. Cast me not away from thy presence; and remove not thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of thy salvation: establish me with thy directing Spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and ungodly men shall turn to thee. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation: and my tongue shall joyfully declare thy righteousness. O Lord, thou shalt open my lips; and my mouth shall declare thy praise. For if thou desiredst sacrifice, I would have given it: thou wilt not take pleasure in whole-burnt-offerings. Sacrifice to God is a broken spirit: a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, to Sion in thy good pleasure; and let the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then shalt thou be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, offering, and whole-burnt-sacrifices: then shall they offer calves upon thine altar.
Worthy of hymns is your all-holy struggle, and your names of great praise, O radiant warriors and wondrous martyrs; therefore we adorn you with praises and entreat you: accept this our small hymn, and deliver from every passion and temptation us who praise you: Rejoice, David with Constantine, ye wise ones who endured courageously, valiant martyrs!
Ye fulfilled the unity of brotherhood by offering yourselves for Christ, and, raised to heaven, ye were made worthy of equal honour and glory and received from the King of all the crown of glory and that promised grace of healing and deliverance from afflictions; and ye heal those who ever magnify you and deliver from trials those who praise you:
Rejoice, true confessors of the right faith; rejoice, ye who sweetly bear the divine yoke; rejoice, two-edged swords that cut off impiety; rejoice, unshakeable towers of courage; rejoice, patterns of the divine army; rejoice, boast of your lineage; rejoice, mighty avengers on the enemies of the Kartlosians; rejoice, manifest sacrifices and offerings to Christ God; rejoice, glory and strength of our fatherland; rejoice, images of the victory of our forebears; rejoice, firm walls of the Church of Iberia; Rejoice, David with Constantine, ye wise ones who endured courageously, valiant martyrs!
When the borders of Argveti were being filled with the lawless, then ye two brothers, invincible in battles and leaders of the people, prepared for battle and encouraged a band of lion-like men to guard your fatherland from the Saracens; so now also reconcile us to Jesus the Almighty, that He may look upon our people, which hath no answer before Him, and keep unshaken our land shaken by the assaults of enemies, that we may not incline to lawlessness and may glorify God with thanksgiving: Alleluia.
Ye were fearless as the bodiless ones and did not tremble at the multitude of the enemies, but fiercely attacked the insolent invading Muslims, slew countless numbers and restored victory to the Georgians; but now the rulers of lawlessness have risen against us and labour for the corruption and destruction of our people, while we have given ourselves over to sleep and slackness, and our land is laid waste and fallen; but give us strength, ye valiant ones, to trample on the devices of the enemy, that we may escape the wrath stirred up by God and say this song of praise:
Rejoice, eristavis and commanders, indestructible monuments of valour; rejoice, David, most skilled warrior, and Constantine, all-wise youth; rejoice, invincible fighters in the time of the invasion of foreigners; rejoice, ye of one soul in spirit and most firm in body; rejoice, ye who give courage in battles and rouse valour; rejoice, ye who fervently laid down your lives for Christ and boast in His cross; rejoice, ye who call men to the service of the fatherland; rejoice, ye who lead the erring onto the path of truth; rejoice, ye who soften hearts turned to stone and hardened; rejoice, feeders of the poor and comforters of the sorrowful; rejoice, ye who finished well the divine course; Rejoice, David with Constantine, ye wise ones who endured courageously, valiant martyrs!
When that fierce Marwan the Deaf learned what had befallen them, he rose up to make war and take vengeance on the Georgians, and coming with a countless army he began to slaughter and destroy all; and ye, ashamed to turn back, many times attacked that foul emir, but greatly wearied by the battle ye fell into the hands of fierce enemies, and like the youths in the furnace ye offered God a sacrifice of praise: Alleluia.
When they told that foul Deaf one of your capture, most joyful and pleasing to him, he lifted his hands to heaven and magnified Muhammad, the maker of a false law; but ye stood amid the godless, O valiant ones, firm and unshaken like towers, and unceasingly preached Christ, the true God; entreat Him now, ye victors in the struggle, to deliver from every affliction and sorrow us who sing to you:
Rejoice, ye joined by a brotherly mind; rejoice, ye established by divine counsel; rejoice, ye armed with hope in the Lord and manly strength; rejoice, ye encouraged by the power of the Crucified; rejoice, ye who courageously entered the arena of struggle; rejoice, lambs of God who followed in the steps of the good Shepherd; rejoice, ye who shone with the blood of your struggles as with purple; rejoice, fellow-soldiers and fellow-strugglers, joint heirs of the endless kingdom; rejoice, ye who dwell in the choir of martyrs; rejoice, ye who are added to the glorious choir of the fathers who laid down their lives for faith and land; rejoice, ye blessed ones remembered with blessing; Rejoice, David with Constantine, ye wise ones who endured courageously, valiant martyrs!
When they set you before the emir Marwan, divine zeal encouraged you all the more, and ye boldly exposed the follower of the false prophet, who pressed you for the sake of a vain life to lose that immortal life, and ye exposed his deeds; so grant us too divine zeal for the fatherland, purity of life and the fear of God, that our heart may not be cold to hear divine teachings and to glorify and sing to God: Alleluia.
When the tyrant heard your wise words, he was filled with great wrath and commanded the executioners to beat you with rods; but ye bore the tearing of your flesh with an eager mind, and cast down the hosts of the godless together with their leader; so look upon us too, and drive from us trials and the assaults of demons by your intercession, that, kept unharmed, we may boast and say according to our strength:
Rejoice, ye who in captivity kept divine nobility; rejoice, ye who by the power of the spirit covered human weakness; rejoice, teachers of soldierly valour; rejoice, ye who quenched the furnace of lawlessness with the dew of patience; rejoice, ye who humbled the insolence of God-haters; rejoice, ye who undid the arts of heretics; rejoice, ye who calmed barbarous insolence; rejoice, ye who with a tongue of fire burned up lies of many contrivings; rejoice, deliverers from the wiles of men and the delusions of the devil; rejoice, uniters of neighbours and overthrowers of enemies; rejoice, planters of every good and God-pleasing thing; Rejoice, David with Constantine, ye wise ones who endured courageously, valiant martyrs!
When that all-evil emir thought to overcome and seduce your patience, he said with crafty flattery to the valiant martyrs: “Forsake your vain faith and submit to the law of Muhammad, that I may grant you countless wealth and set you above all my commanders”; but his craft was in vain, for ye counted that deceiving glory and military honour as nothing out of longing for Christ God, and fearlessly sang of His might: Alleluia.
Longing for the kingdom of the Saviour, ye answered the lawless one with one voice: “O evil tyrant, our God hath called us into the light, and we are ready for torment and death for His name”, and ye boldly stopped the mouth of that blaspheming tyrant; so grant us too the grace of unity and bring to life the image of our spiritual strength, that by a brotherly and like-minded struggle in the service of God and the fatherland we may withstand the treachery of the visible and invisible enemy and say a hymn of thanksgiving:
Rejoice, watchful guardians of piety; rejoice, ye who counted the delights of this world as nothing; rejoice, seekers of that incorruptible eternal wealth; rejoice, ye who exposed the seeming prosperity in sin; rejoice, ye who shattered the snares of the adversaries who warred against you; rejoice, ye who by the boldness of martyrs destroyed the delusion of the godless; rejoice, ye who overthrew teachings that corrupt the soul; rejoice, ye who endured manifold torments in the nature of corruptible flesh; rejoice, ye who established divine power on earth; rejoice, planters of love for God and fatherland; rejoice, candles that enlighten the wise and burn the foolish; Rejoice, David with Constantine, ye wise ones who endured courageously, valiant martyrs!
Ye counted the wrath of the lawless as nothing and were not at all terrified, but showed wondrous courage, and as invincible soldiers of the great King ye cast down the many-wiled treachery of the enemy; so now also drive all insolence and pride from our darkened mind and grant us the wisdom of discerning good and evil, that we may turn from the ruinous snares of the enemy and be made worthy of the thrice-holy hymn: Alleluia.
Seeing you invincible, that frenzied emir was greatly enraged and gave you into the hands of executioners and evildoers to torture you ten days without rest; but ye bore the crushing of your limbs and fierce wounds with firm faith, and, nailed to a tree, ye began to sing to the Saviour; intercede now before Him, that until the end of the age He may guard Iberia and the people of Iberia, which He chose, and shelter us from every heresy and alien law, that we may not fall away from the holy apostolic Church, and walking in the commandments of God may be made worthy to praise your struggle:
Rejoice, ye who bore storms and torments of many kinds; rejoice, ye who courageously endured hunger and thirst; rejoice, ye who showed the treachery of those lawless tyrants to be powerless; rejoice, ye who washed away the stain of unbelief; rejoice, ye who by your divine struggle amazed the bodiless ranks; rejoice, ye who bring to understanding those darkened by senselessness; rejoice, strengtheners of the spiritual courage of the Iberians; rejoice, ye who awaken our deeply sleeping conscience; rejoice, comforters of the sorrowful and swift banishers of grievous calamities; rejoice, ye who encourage the Orthodox armies; rejoice, ye who stir those who hope in you to imitate your virtues; Rejoice, David with Constantine, ye wise ones who endured courageously, valiant martyrs!
When the lawless magi saw you tormented in prison, they flatteringly threatened you with fierce torments unless ye would deny Christ, the Lord and God of the living and the dead; but ye would not bear the dishonouring of God the Creator by godless and sinful men, but courageously scorned their flatteries and glorified Him who strengthened you before the lawless: Alleluia.
O fearless courage, good friends and beautiful brothers! For, worn down by suffering, ye said to the tyrants: “Know your Creator”; but they stopped their ears like a deaf adder and wore down your bodies with torments of every kind, O blessed ones; yet they marvelled at your courage, for ye counted death and suffering as joy, and like your Deliverer ye hastened to the struggles even unto death; therefore we cry thus to the two glorious, invincible martyrs and mighty warriors:
Rejoice, ye who glorified God in prison with prayer and psalmody; rejoice, preachers of the divine wisdom of Christians; rejoice, ye who courageously endured the darkness of prison and bonds; rejoice, rational sheep and spiritual offerings, who shed your blood for love of Christ; rejoice, ye who cast down the assaults of tyrants; rejoice, ye who destroyed the sorcery of magi and soothsayers; rejoice, ye who exposed their craft by victory; rejoice, ye who put to shame the mighty and valiant who boast of their wealth and their own arm and are proud of the multitude of their people; rejoice, ye who grant honour to the faithful; rejoice, ye who strike terror into traitors and apostates from the fatherland; rejoice, ye who blot out the stain of superstition; Rejoice, David with Constantine, ye wise ones who endured courageously, valiant martyrs!
When they led you bound like lambs to the slaughter by the bank of the river, ye stood with joy in the arena of the martyr’s struggle and prayed fervently to the all-good God, that your relics might by divine power drive away passions and your names, remembered in faith, might heal sicknesses and pains; then ye heard a divine voice from on high in the hearing of all, promising the gift of the grace of help, and with prayer and singing ye commended your souls to God: Alleluia.
When they heard that voice from heaven which graciously fulfilled your supplication, those ungrateful tyrants did not understand this miracle, and, hanging stones upon you and binding you, they cast you into the great river Rioni, where ye received a divine end, and, adorned with victory, ye were crowned by the right hand of God; and now intercede before Him, that He may plant in us the fear and hatred of sin and the love of virtue, that we may walk worthily and in holiness on the path of our fathers and forefathers and call you blessed with longing:
Rejoice, most radiant lamps that scatter the darkness of godlessness; rejoice, ye who gave yourselves up for love of God and faithfulness to your people; rejoice, ye who received a merciless death with thanksgiving; rejoice, ye who received from the Lord authority over unclean spirits; rejoice, ye who by your intercession open the doors of divine mercy; rejoice, ye who ask of the Lord the sweetness of piety for the Georgian people; rejoice, ye who by the fruit of your valour strengthen those held fast by the sleep of sloth; rejoice, ye who adorned the Church of Iberia with your precious blood; rejoice, ye who by the telling of your struggles comfort the faithful sons of Georgia and the faithful servants; rejoice, ye who bring wrath upon those who forget their fatherland and their law; rejoice, ye who cut off evil and alien ways and customs; Rejoice, David with Constantine, ye wise ones who endured courageously, valiant martyrs!
Your servants understood your divine greatness when they saw miracles beyond nature — those three pillars of light and your bodies shining upon the water brighter than the sun — and, bringing you up with honour, they laid you beneath the altar, in the narthex of the church, and, telling of your struggle, they offered you the praise of song and praised the Giver of your victory: Alleluia.
At that strange and fearful vision King Bagrat was struck with awe, when ye appeared to him in sleep, O warriors of Christ, armed, and made known to him the place of your burial; then the pious king was moved in spirit and built on that place a beautiful monastery, and in the church he laid in a shrine your incorrupt and unharmed relics, for the strengthening of the Orthodox faith and as a sign of immortality, that all might venerate them as a treasure bearing holiness and speak your praises:
Rejoice, all-radiant champions and martyrs of the truth; rejoice, monuments of faith and seals of steadfastness; rejoice, spiritual diamonds of patience; rejoice, ye who together bore that fierce trial; rejoice, ye who courageously exposed a law woven by human cunning; rejoice, swords that cut off the tares of the delusion of Muhammad; rejoice, workers of the soldier’s and the martyr’s struggle; rejoice, receivers of the crown of incorruption; rejoice, fragrant flowers of paradise; rejoice, branches of the vine of Christ cut off without mercy; rejoice, precious stones, luminaries of the Church of Iberia; Rejoice, David with Constantine, ye wise ones who endured courageously, valiant martyrs!
When the unbelievers, who knew not the power of God, boldly took possession of our God-crowned land, like those barbarian invaders they ravaged “Motsameta” and defiled your all-honourable and holy resting-place; and although there was no way of deliverance or help from anywhere, the Lord Almighty was pleased to make manifest your divine glory, that we might thus zealously adorn you and offer God a thanksgiving of praise: Alleluia.
When those God-fighters, turned savage as beasts, dishonourably threw your much-suffering relics, like those of the valiant Forty, onto a cart and hastened to cast them into the river Rioni, the God of wonders brought their design to nothing, and they could not come near the banks of the river, for hail and fierce rain rose up like an unshakeable wall before the blasphemers and gave comfort and courage to the confessors of Christ, that all who heard of your wonders might be filled with spiritual light and unceasingly call you blessed as the unconquerable towers and unbreachable walls of the Georgians:
Rejoice, ye who appeared as a crown of martyrs and invincible warriors of Christ; rejoice, ye who by signs confound the godless and perverse; rejoice, ye who bring wrath upon the blasphemers of the Holy Spirit; rejoice, ye who crush those who corrupt the Lord’s people with guile; rejoice, ye who strike terror into the destroyers of the sanctuary and the persecutors of the priesthood; rejoice, ye who deliver from evil heedlessness and shamelessness; rejoice, comforters of the right-believing and shamers of the wrong-believing; rejoice, ye who spread the joy of grace in God-loving hearts; rejoice, ye who teach us to live watchfully and soberly; rejoice, awakeners of souls and reprovers of our sins; rejoice, intercessors and swift hearers for leaders of the people and judges who are of Orthodox mind; Rejoice, David with Constantine, ye wise ones who endured courageously, valiant martyrs!
O how great a glory your valour won for you, O martyrs! For your relics, placed by God’s providence in a museum, as a fountain of grace and of a multitude of signs, unceasingly poured forth healing of souls and bodies and strengthened those enslaved under oppression in that time of warfare against God; and the encouraged assembly of the faithful abundantly received grace and healing and sweetly sang to the Creator of all: Alleluia.
When those oppressors devised to bring your relics back in secret to your resting-place there, that the lovers of the martyrs might not perceive it, a countless people and a multitude of Georgians went out with joy to meet you, and, casting off the fear of the haters of Christ, they lit up that impenetrable pitch darkness with lamps and candles, and, hastening straightway to “Motsameta”, they praised you as fervent intercessors given by God:
Rejoice, ye who by the brightness of your signs and the brilliance of your struggles are likened to the two luminaries of the firmament; rejoice, ye who from this holy abode, as from the river of Eden, pour out streams of life over the face of the land and of our people; rejoice, ye who accept a feeble petition and bestow spiritual gifts abundantly; rejoice, ye who put to shame those made godless by blasphemy; rejoice, ye who fill with spiritual joy the Christians terrified by them; rejoice, ye who by the power of your relics drive out unclean spirits; rejoice, ye who spread over the faithful the sweet light of victory and strengthen them; rejoice, ye who establish in piety hearts shaken by the waves of the world; rejoice, ye who enlighten souls clothed in darkness; rejoice, ye who incline mercifully to those who entreat you and embolden those who revere you; rejoice, ye who quench the flame of the passions and grievous diseases; Rejoice, David with Constantine, ye wise ones who endured courageously, valiant martyrs!
Now the Church of Georgia exults in your memory and the borders of Argveti are adorned, and still more doth “Motsameta” boast, and shareth its joy with all the faithful and ungrudgingly distributeth true grace and mercy; therefore let us hasten to this beautiful abode and to the resting-place of your relics, that we may fervently kiss your holy things and praise God with a voice of thanksgiving: Alleluia.
O wonder of divine love and grace! For even after death ye shine on the ends of our land more brightly than the sun, and from the shrine ye preach Christ God; entreat Him alone to turn away the wrath justly stirred up because of our sins, to break the insolence of our countless enemies who ever oppress and afflict us, and to grant a peaceful and sober life to us who praise you:
Rejoice, ye of great and glorious name, for ye became warriors of the Lord by martyrdom and have won to this day the name of immortality; rejoice, ye who are joined inseparably, for we honour your shared torments and the one death by which ye were glorified; rejoice, for Christ was well pleased to set your all-holy relics as His throne, and through your intercession He giveth consolation to the faithful; rejoice, for we have your glorious church as a treasury of unfailing graces, and in it we receive mercy and blessing abundantly; rejoice, for God hath glorified your holy memory, and still more the shrine of your precious bones; rejoice, for we have your holy shrine as spiritual wealth and a divine treasure, and, hastening in faith to kiss it, we are granted the good fulfilment of our petitions; rejoice, for your bare bones are honoured with great reverence by kings and hierarchs; rejoice, undivided and invincible helpers, for touching your relics we are healed in soul and body; rejoice, for all the faithful are moved to approach the shrine of your relics and draw up grace and signs of healing; rejoice, great wonderworkers, for ye perform signs and wonders given by God and grant deliverance and salvation to those tossed by storms; rejoice, for the martyrs’ reliquary of your bones maketh fragrant all who sing to you; Rejoice, David with Constantine, ye wise ones who endured courageously, valiant martyrs!
O radiant warriors, invincible in battles, who in afflictions stretch out a hand that never puts to shame, God-bearing David and Constantine, all-praised martyrs! Ye exchanged the earthly army for the heavenly army, and now ye ever rejoice in the heavens with the bodiless ranks; with them entreat Christ our King, who alone is plenteous in mercy, to have mercy on us and save us from grievous sins, infirmities and trials, that we may escape those bitter eternal torments and ever sing with you to God, who is wondrous in His saints: Alleluia.
This kontakion thrice; then Ikos 1 and Kontakion 1.
O nobly victorious martyrs of Christ, who endured courageously, David, most skilled warrior, and Constantine, all-wise youth, swift helpers of those who entreat you and givers of mercy, most radiant princes of Argveti!
O radiant and great adornments of the martyrs, David, who shone with invincible struggle, and Constantine, steadfast of mind in sufferings! When ye were raised from the flesh to God whom ye longed for, ye bestowed your all-praised relics on the holy Church as a light and a crown of graces, and we venerate them and entreat you: remember us before God and by the radiance of your holiness quench “the mystery of lawlessness” stirred up against our beloved people, and shelter us from the assembly of heretics, which is “the abomination of desolation”, lest the godless and the heathen say, Where is their God, in whom they hoped? Be fervent intercessors for us sinners before Christ, that He may guard us from the snare of the enemy and from strife among brothers and give us a faithful and wise man as a God-pleasing king and leader, as David was to Israel, who by the power of the Cross shall restore the broken unity of our fatherland and, as once of old, shall raise up the dignity and strength of the land allotted to the Theotokos and of our people. Strengthen in their ministry the Most Holy and Most Blessed Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Archbishop of Mtskheta-Tbilisi and Metropolitan of Bichvinta and Tskhum-Abkhazeti, our father Ilia, the most reverend metropolitans, archbishops and bishops and all the priestly and monastic orders, the commanders and the governors of cities, the Christ-loving armed forces, and our benefactors, and all Orthodox Christians.
O beauty of martyrs and ascetics, our instructors and luminaries, fruitful labourers of the King, David, great luminary of the world, and Constantine, vessel of courage! As ye have power granted by God, intercede before God, that He may grant glory to the churches, honour to the clergy, good shepherding of the people to rulers, courage to soldiers, sinlessness to the laity and chastity to women; and to us a life of good conduct, adornment with works of mercy, enlightenment through holy prayer, cleansing through confession, radiance through communion, an honourable departure, the inheritance of the kingdom, singing with the angels, reigning with the saints, and with you glory and thanksgiving; for to Him befitteth all glory, honour and worship, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
It is truly meet that we should magnify thee, O Theotokos, who art ever-blessed and all-immaculate and the Mother of our God. Thee, more honourable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, who without corruption gavest birth to God the Word, the only Theotokos, we magnify in song.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Lord, have mercy. (Thrice)
O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, through the prayers of Thy most pure Mother, of the holy great-martyrs, the princes of Argveti, and of all the saints, have mercy on us. Amen.
