Hymns to the Anchiskhati Icon

O Wisdom of the Father, Beginning and Cause of good, O God, Word of God, O Christ, grant me words as I glorify the image of Thine incarnation!

The tongues of Adam’s race, of nations and peoples, foretold from of old, are stirred to praise, to sing and to glorify the praised and glorious, awesome image of the Saviour!

Have mercy, O Merciful One, on those whom Thou hast made and glorified, upon whom Thy holy and awesome name is called, for whose sake the Word of the Father without beginning became man!

Hear our supplication and our falling down before thee, and swiftly deliver from all troubles those who trust in thee, who are in need and await mercy, O awesome icon!

Blessed is the people that knoweth the song, the glory and the praise of thee, O icon of the Son of God made man for the salvation of all that is, ever the intercessor for those who trust in thee!

Isaiah foretold to us the incarnation and the Passion for the sake of those who suffer, and deliverance through Thee, O Light and Light of God, Word of God the Father, Jesus Christ!

Hear our prayer and look upon our supplication and our sighing; turn not Thy face from us, but look upon us in mercy through the prayers of Thy Mother!

Who shall tell of Thy wonders, O Lord, or who shall make Thy praises heard? For Thou pitiest sinners with compassion and healest the despairing with mercy!

Behold, we flee to Thee, the Merciful, the Saviour and Physician; in our need we fall down and ask: in mercy have mercy on us, O awesome Anchiskhati!

Therefore thy people in their affliction fall down with song, sighing and weeping, for we know thy compassion; and now incline to mercy and save Thy servants, O Saviour!

Be not wroth with us, O Deliverer; rebuke us not in Thine anger, neither chasten us in Thy wrath, but in wrath remember Thy mercies of old, O awesome icon of the Saviour!

As is our custom, O Christ, Word of God, we move Thine immaculate Mother to intercede: by her prayers deliver from troubles and trials these Thine unworthy servants!

Willing to turn us unbelievers to the faith, O good Christ God, Thou didst make the icon of Thine incarnation shine upon us through the Apostle Andrew!

Habakkuk heard the report of Thy first coming, O God, Word of God, O Christ, and cried out in amazement; and with him we also cry: Glory to Thy power, O Lord!

There is none among us faithful men, O awesome icon, who hath called upon thy name and hath not straightway received great mercy through thee: glory to thee!

O awesome icon of the visible God the Word, made man for the salvation of all that is, good and merciful, look upon us in mercy and keep those who trust in thee!

All peoples of heaven and earth are stirred to glorify thee and sing to thee, O Mother of God: intercede for those who trust in thee and in thy Son!

Turn thy sweet, good and merciful face kindly upon me, O awesome icon, for thou art delight and joy, comfort and help!

O Word of God, abide with us, and ever, day and night, guard us and shelter us at every hour; be our helper and deliver us from enemies visible and invisible!

Thou art the glory, the boast and the adornment of Adam’s race, O Mother of the Word of God: make thy Son, the Lord and Creator of all, merciful towards us!

The prophet foretold of old beheld in the Spirit the incarnation of our God and cried thus: Behold, a Virgin shall conceive and bear a Son; hear, ye nations, and be overcome!

O Three in Persons, One in nature, only, simple and unchanging, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, keep us Thine unworthy servants and deliver us from all trials!

And now I fall down before thee and ever entreat thee, I thy sinful, unworthy and wretched servant: in compassion deliver from all troubles me who trust in thee, O awesome icon!

Like lions our enemies boast against us and mock us; but do thou, O awesome icon, crush them with thine arm, that all may know that thou art our strength and our might!

When Thou shalt hold our judgement in awe, O Jesus, Word of the good God, in that hour help me and be merciful, O most merciful One, and remember not my sins and transgressions!

With unworthy lips we make bold to approach Thee, we Thy lowly and helpless servants, and we glorify and worship Thy mercies: stretch out thy hand to us, O awesome icon!

Of Adam’s race there is none who gave birth without seed and remained a virgin but thee, O swift intercessor for us sinners, O Mother who didst bear the Son of God!

Forget not him who trusteth in Thee and glorifieth Thee, O Word of God, that I may praise Thee: Blessed art Thou, O Lord, from age to age!

Day and night deliver the people who sing to thee and glorify thee, that with thanksgiving we may say, O awesome icon: Glory to thy mercies!

O Lord God, deliver from troubles those who trust in Thee, who sing to Thee and venerate the likeness of Thy holy icon, of Thee who became man for our sake!

Hear us, thy sinful and unworthy servants, and incline to mercy and compassion, O awesome icon, that we may bless thee unto the ages!

Let there be mercy upon those who venerate and glorify thee, who confess thee as the Mother of our God, O ever-present intercessor for those who trust in thee!

When I remember thy wonders, countless and awesome, O awesome Anchiskhati, we are amazed in mind and cry out in wonder: All ye works, bless today God and the Lord, praise and supremely exalt Him unto the ages!

As the Ninevites of old, we also fall down and entreat Thee, O most merciful and good One: in mercy have mercy on us and cast not away these Thine unworthy servants, who venerate the icon of Thine incarnation!

Andrew, the head of the apostles, the first-called disciple of the great King — let him be glorified by all the valleys and glens of Klarjeti! — came from Hierapolis and bestowed this awesome icon on us who trust in him!

Blessed are those who trust in thee, who glorify and venerate the icon of the Saviour, O awesome icon, for thou glorifiest those who glorify and venerate thee; thou grantest and fulfillest the petitions of those who pray, and never puttest their hope to shame!

O Son without beginning and without end, equal to the Father without beginning and to the Spirit, who before the ages wast born, the Only One of the Only Father, and now for our sake hast become man ineffably of the Virgin: glory to Thy mercies!

Now are fulfilled the parables and figures foretold by the prophets: the Virgin hath borne Christ without seed, for whose sake we the faithful cry out and say: All ye works, bless!

Of our own will we have sinned against Thee and angered Thee, and have forgotten Thy mercies; but now look upon us who have turned to Thee: save us, have mercy on us and deliver us from evils, O awesome icon of the Saviour!

O God, Word of the Father, O Christ, who for our sake didst become man, deliver from all troubles and trials those who trust in Thee and venerate Thine icon; O Merciful One, have mercy on us and bestow Thy mercies upon us!

Let the unbelievers who venerate not the icon of Christ God and of all His saints hear what Basil saith: that the honour paid to the image passeth to its prototype, which we the faithful worship!

Make litanies, sing and glorify, every breath and every creature, the intercessor of every faithful soul, the wall and protector, the guardian and saviour, the awesome Anchiskhati!

Hear, O heaven, and give ear, O earth: for a Virgin, the daughter of Adam, hath borne for us men Jesus the Saviour, and she intercedeth for us before Him and asketh mercy for us, now and ever and unto ages of ages!
