Translation of the Relics of the Hieromartyr Ignatius the God-bearer (+107)

The translation of the relics of Saint Ignatius the God-bearer. After the hierarch Ignatius had been torn to pieces by wild beasts by order of the Emperor Trajan (98–117), in 107 the Christians gathered his bones and buried them in Rome. In 108 the saint’s incorrupt relics were translated to a suburb of Antioch. Their second translation, into the city of Antioch itself, took place in 438. When the Persians captured this city, in 540 (according to other information, in 638), the hierarch’s remains were brought back to Rome and placed in the church of the holy Pope Clement.
