Venerable Marcian the Presbyter (V)

The Venerable Marcian, presbyter and oikonomos of the Great Church of Constantinople, was born in Rome and received his elementary education in Constantinople. The rich inheritance left after his parents’ death the venerable father spent on building, restoring and adorning churches. He built and richly adorned a church of the holy Martyr Anastasia and translated the saint’s incorrupt relics there, and he built a church of the holy Martyr Irene. By his moral purity and strict ascetic life the Venerable Marcian drew the attention of the patriarch, who ordained him presbyter and appointed him oikonomos of the Great Patriarchal Church of Constantinople.

The Venerable Marcian died in 472–474 and was buried in Constantinople, in the church of Saint John the Baptist.
