Holy Venerable Martyrs of Athos (XIII)
The holy Venerable Martyrs of Karyes met their end in the reign of Michael Palaeologus (1259–1282), a traitor to Orthodoxy, in the monastery of Karyes on Mount Athos, at the hands of papists who burst in with fire and sword. The Latins burned and destroyed the Protaton, and no one was left alive. The venerable fathers, who had boldly denounced the heresy of the Catholics, were cruelly tortured by the papists and then hanged in front of the Protaton. The monks who had taken refuge in the cells around Karyes were cut down with swords by the invaders (see the reading for 28 October).
