Venerable Nectarius (+1500) and Philotheus of Athos
The Venerable Nectarius was brought up by his father, who laboured in the monastery of Cosmas and Damian in Bitola. The blessed one was tonsured a monk on the Holy Mountain, and then lived in obedience to the venerable fathers Philotheus and Dionysius of Athos. Like Job, Saint Nectarius endured grievous bodily illnesses without murmuring, and on 5 December 1500 committed his soul to the Lord in peace. The holy father’s incorrupt relics, uncovered four years later, gave forth a wonderful fragrance.
The Venerable Philotheus of Athos (XV), the teacher of the Venerable Nectarius, laboured on Athos, in the monastery of Karyes. For his holy life he was granted by the Lord the gift of clairvoyance.
