St George the Confessor, His Wife Irene and Their Children (IX)
Saint George the Confessor, his wife Irene and their children (IX) met their end when the iconoclast heresy was raging. The Emperor Theophilus tried to force Saint George to renounce the veneration of icons. The confessor refused. By the emperor’s order the saint’s property was taken from him, while he himself was led through the streets of Constantinople with a rope round his neck and thrown into a dungeon. After this Saint George, with his wife and children, was exiled to Constantinople.
