Our Fathers among the Saints, the Great Hierarchs Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom
The Synaxis of the great ecumenical teachers and hierarchs Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom. In Constantinople there was a long dispute over which of the three hierarchs should be given pre-eminence: some set Basil the Great (commemorated 1 January) higher, others Gregory the Theologian (commemorated 25 January), and others John Chrysostom (commemorated 13 November). For this reason division arose among the Christians.
By God’s will, in 1084 all three hierarchs appeared together to Metropolitan John, declared that they are equal before the Lord, and commanded that their commemoration be established on one day.
