Translation of the Relics of Theodore the Studite (845), and His Brother Joseph, Archbishop of Thessalonica (+830)

The Venerable Theodore the Studite (commemorated 11 November) was hegumen of the Studion monastery in the eighth and ninth centuries. Persecuted by the iconoclasts, he died in Chersonesus in 826. On 26 January the translation of his incorrupt relics from Chersonesus to Constantinople is celebrated.

Saint Joseph, Archbishop of Thessalonica, was the brother and faithful fellow labourer of the Venerable Theodore the Studite: with him he laboured in the Sakkoudion monastery under the guidance of the Venerable Plato (commemorated 5 April), and afterwards, now in the rank of hierarch, he denounced the Emperor Constantine (780–797) for his unlawful marriage and fought against the heresy of the iconoclasts. For such steadfastness he endured many persecutions, exiles, torments and oppressions. The holy father spent the last years of his life in the Studion monastery. He died in 830.
