Holy Martyr Athenodorus (+c. 304)
The holy Martyr Athenodorus was born in Mesopotamia of Syria and took up the monastic life from his youth. Eleusius, the governor of the country, embittered by the devil’s machinations and by slander, seized the saint and handed him over to torture. The martyr’s savage tortures were accompanied by miracles, which converted many of the pagans present to the Christian faith. When they decided to behead Athenodorus, the executioner’s arm withered, and the lamb of Christ committed his soul to the Lord in prayer.
