Right-believing Prince Wenceslas of Bohemia (+935)

The right-believing Prince Wenceslas of Bohemia, grandson of Saint Ludmila (commemorated 16 September), was brought up by the hand of his blessed grandmother. The saint was eighteen when the government of the land was laid on him. In spite of his youth, he carried out his heavy duty wisely and justly, and laboured diligently for the Christian enlightenment of the people. The blessed Wenceslas was distinguished by deep learning and knew Latin and Greek. He built and adorned churches and treated the clergy with reverence. Treacherous nobles, or according to another view the German-Catholic party, stirred up his brother Boleslav against the holy prince. Boleslav invited Wenceslas to the consecration of a church, and the next day, as he was going to Matins, had him treacherously murdered on the threshold of the church. The saint’s incorrupt relics rest in Prague, in the cathedral of Saint Vitus, which he himself built (+935).
