The Prophet Baruch (6th Century Before Christ)

The holy Prophet Baruch was the inseparable companion, disciple, friend and scribe of the Prophet Jeremiah (commemorated 1 May). He wrote down the whole scroll of his teacher’s prophecies and read it to the people gathered in the Temple at Jerusalem. Saint Baruch lamented bitterly with Jeremiah over the destruction of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar, taught and rebuked the Jews, and patiently bore their hatred and persecution. The blessed one saw with his own eyes the stoning of Jeremiah and committed his holy body to the earth.

Saint Baruch did not live long after the martyr’s death of the Prophet Jeremiah. He died in Egypt in the sixth century before the Nativity of Christ. Saint Baruch foretold the return of the Jews from the Babylonian captivity and the desolation of Babylon; he also clearly foresaw the incarnation of the Son of God.
