Uncovering of the Relics of the Venerable Seraphim of Sarov, the Wonderworker (1903)

The plundering of the Sarov monastery and the carrying off of Saint Seraphim’s remains

The Venerable Seraphim of Sarov was born on 19 July 1754 in Kursk. The light of the holy father who laboured in the desert of Sarov shone abundantly over all Russia. The father, who drew near to angelic holiness and was adorned with the gifts of foresight and wonderworking, reposed on 2 January 1833. He was committed to the earth with honour on the right side of the sanctuary of the Dormition cathedral.

On 19 July 1903, the birthday of the blessed Seraphim, the solemn uncovering of his holy relics took place at Sarov in the presence of the Russian Emperor Nicholas II, other members of the royal family, and up to three hundred thousand pilgrims. They were transferred to a shrine prepared for them beforehand, for the people to venerate. This event was accompanied by many signs, miracles and healings (for more about the Venerable Seraphim of Sarov see the reading for 2 January).
