St Paul of Kaium (+766)

Saint Paul of Kaium was born and brought up in Constantinople. For denouncing the iconoclast Emperor Constantine Copronymus (740–775) his nose was cut off, boiling pitch and sulphur were poured over him, his eyes were put out, and, tormented and humiliated like this, he was dragged for a long time with his feet bound through the streets of the city.

Saint Paul died in torment on 7 June 766. After 122 years it was discovered that his body, buried in the Kaium monastery, had been preserved incorrupt. It was translated to the church of the Most Holy Mother of God. In 1222 the holy relics were translated from Constantinople to Venice.
