St Nicetas, Bishop of Chalcedon (IX)
Saint Nicetas, Bishop of Chalcedon (IX), lived in the second half of the eighth century. For his God-pleasing life he was consecrated Bishop of Chalcedon. Saint Nicetas was distinguished by compassion; he cared for widows and orphans, stood by those unjustly oppressed, and helped the poor. His house became a shelter for wanderers. In the time of the iconoclast Leo the Armenian (813–820) the saint boldly denounced the heretics. For this he endured much persecution from the lawless emperor and his followers. The holy confessor died at the beginning of the ninth century. Miraculous healings took place at his relics. In the canon written by Joseph, a presbyter of Constantinople, Saint Nicetas’s brother, Saint Ignatius, is also mentioned.
