St Antony, Patriarch of Constantinople (+895)

Saint Antony, Patriarch of Constantinople, was from Asia, but spent his whole life, from childhood until his repose, in Constantinople. He was born around 829 into a family of rich and pious Christians. After his mother’s death the twelve-year-old boy went to a monastery, where, imitating the superior, he spent his nights in prayer and lived a strict, ascetic life. Some time later he was ordained priest against his will and appointed superior as well. In this rank he tonsured his own father a monk. Saint Antony was distinguished by compassion; he loved the poor and gave to them generously.

In 893 the blessed father was enthroned on the patriarchal throne of Constantinople. After this he increased still more his care for the destitute, and helped especially poor clergy. With the support of the Emperor Leo the Wise, Patriarch Antony did many good things for the Church.

In 895, in deep old age, Antony committed his soul to the Lord in peace.
