Venerable Salamanes the Silent (+c. 400)
The Venerable Salamanes the Silent is the first saint to have kept a vow of silence. He shut himself up in a cave on the bank of the River Euphrates and spoke only with the Lord in his holy prayers; when the Bishop of Capersana decided to ordain the saint priest, he did not answer him even a single word. The Venerable Salamanes remained in this labour until his end (+c. 400).
