The history of the Iveron icon goes back many centuries. In the 9th century, in the age of iconoclasm, a pious woman living near Nicaea kept an icon of the Most Pure Mother of God. To save the holy image from destruction, she lowered the icon into the sea. Wondrously, the icon stood upright on the water and after a time reached Mount Athos. From then until today it has rested in the gate chapel of the Iviron Monastery.
This Iveron icon of the Mother of God in a moulded frame makes a good addition to a home icon corner.
