Description
By tradition, the Smolensk icon of the Mother of God was painted by the holy Evangelist Luke at the request of Theophilus, ruler of Antioch. From Antioch the holy image was taken to Jerusalem, and from there to Constantinople. It came to Rus' through the dynastic marriage of the Greek princess Anna and Prince Vsevolod Yaroslavich. Under Vladimir Monomakh the icon was moved to the Dormition church in Smolensk.
This Smolensk icon of the Mother of God in a moulded frame makes a good addition to a home icon corner.
