Prayer of Thanksgiving of St Macarius
I thank Thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart, humbly, greatly and for ever, upon all things and for all things: for Thou didst create me out of nothing, who had not been, and didst strengthen me, and have mercy on me, and shelter me, and keep me, and order my days until now; and Thou didst strengthen me, a sinner and unworthy, in this life of the world, and didst not punish me according to my deeds, though I was liable to ten thousand deaths for my countless faults and evil transgressions, and for the unseemly iniquities which I have committed in my life. And now I entreat Thee, O Lord, trusting in the good sweetness and the many mercies which Thou hast shown upon the race of men, that Thou mayest now make me worthy to turn to Thy fear and to trust in Thee, and to keep Thy commandments with every spiritual word, with all purity of body and soul, and with all guilelessness and innocence. I entreat Thee, O most merciful Lord, that I may not perish in my sins like Julian the lawless, but that, as with Manasseh, Thou wouldest be pleased to turn me to Thy fear, as Thou art merciful, O Lord; and cleanse my soul from every evil care, from every defiled thought, from every foul and abominable desire, and from every unseemly word. Keep me, O Lord, from all envy and jealousy, from all fantasy and show, from lying and deceit; and deliver me, O Lord, from every hateful mishap and care, from all evil love, from every harmful desire, from all arrogance, from every evil temptation, from self-will and contemptuous speech, from all praise and vainglory and blasphemy, from all anger and remembrance of wrongs, from all tumult, from all contradiction and answering back; from wrath and quarrelling deliver me, O Lord; from the occasions of sin, and from every evil deed of the devil and of men, and from every stirring of the flesh and of an estranged soul, cleanse me by Thy mercy, O Deliverer. And now I fall down before Thee, O Lord, in supplication, that Thou mayest bestow on me every good thing and what is most profitable for my soul, and cast out and forgive all my faults and my transgressions, whereby I have sinned against Thee, whether in thought, in word or in deed, willingly or unwillingly, knowingly and in ignorance, sleeping or waking. But I fall down before Thee, O good Lord: abandon me no more, nor give me over to sin against Thee, nor lead me into temptation, O Lord God, Lover of mankind; but deliver me from the evil devil and from all his works, his wickedness and his devices, and from all the treachery and craft of men. For Thou art my God and my Creator, my Benefactor, and, as to the prodigal son, my Comforter, my Helper and my Protector, and in Thee is my hope; and Thee I entreat, O Lord my God: who in wrath remembereth mercy as Thou, O God? A man in anger doeth evil, but mercy outrunneth Thy wrath. For who is like unto Thee, O Lord who rememberest not evil, who didst cleave the rock in the desert and didst satisfy Thy thirsting people? Now also, O Lord, turn away from me Thy righteous wrath. Let not my sins overcome Thy countless mercies, that mine enemy may not rejoice over me; and have mercy on me according to Thy boundless mercy; for to Thee is due thanksgiving and worship, O Holy Trinity, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
