Feast of the Iveron Icon of the All-holy Theotokos, Brought to Georgia from the Iveron Monastery on Athos (1989)
Feast of the Iveron Icon of the All-holy Theotokos, brought to Georgia from the Iveron monastery on Athos. On 26 September 1989 a copy of the Iveron icon of the All-holy Theotokos, the Portaitissa, was brought to Tbilisi from the Iveron monastery on Athos; it had been made by monks of the Holy Mountain with the blessing of Ilia II, Catholicos-Patriarch of Georgia, as an expression of love and gratitude towards the Georgian nation.
All Georgia celebrated on that day. In the nation’s hardships of that time everyone received the coming of the icon that protects Iberia as a heavenly blessing, and this day entered the history of the Church of Georgia as a feast.
The icon rests in the patriarchal Sioni cathedral in Tbilisi.
