Holy Hieromartyr Cornutus, Bishop of Nicomedia (III)
The Hieromartyr Cornutus, bishop of Nicomedia (according to another account, of Iconium), suffered for Christ in the reigns of the emperors Decius (249–251) and Valerian (253–260). The saint came of his own will before the governor of Iconium, denounced him for his idolatry and boldly confessed Christ. For this Saint Cornutus was terribly tortured, and afterwards fetters were put on his feet. He was led through the streets of the city to be mocked by the people. Blood streamed from the blessed one’s feet. At last the holy martyr was beheaded (in the Greek Menaion and other sources the Hieromartyr Cornutus is commemorated under the name Curnutus; see also the reading for 17 August).
