Sts Peter and Paul, Bishops of Nicaea (IX)
Our holy fathers Peter and Paul were Bishops of Nicaea. Saint Peter endured many sufferings from the iconoclasts in defence of the Orthodox faith in the time of the Emperor Leo the Armenian (813–820). He reposed not earlier than 823. Four letters written by Saint Theodore the Studite to the hierarch Peter in 816–823 are known. No information about Saint Paul has been preserved. The holy Church commemorates together the holy hierarchs of Nicaea Peter and Paul, namesakes of the chief apostles and faithful continuers of their work.
