Translation of the Relics of the Right-believing Prince Alexander Nevsky (1724)
The holy right-believing Prince Alexander Nevsky died on 14 November 1263. On 23 November his remains were buried in the cathedral church of the monastery of the Nativity of the Saviour in Vladimir. At the burial a miracle took place: the saint himself stretched out his hand to receive the letter of absolution. In 1380, before the battle of Kulikovo, the incorrupt relics of the right-believing prince were miraculously revealed. On 30 August 1721 Peter I made peace with the Swedes after a long war. The translation of the blessed Alexander’s incorrupt relics from Vladimir to Petersburg, to the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, was connected with this day. It is precisely this event that we celebrate on 30 August. The Church also commemorates Alexander Nevsky on 23 November.
