Hieromartyr Tigrius the Presbyter and Eutropius the Reader (+404)

The Hieromartyr Tigrius the Presbyter and Eutropius the Reader were contemporaries of the holy chief shepherd John Chrysostom (commemorated 13 November and 14 September) and members of his clergy. Tigrius, a humble and merciful father, faithfully governed his flock, while Eutropius, a Christian distinguished by holiness and prudence, gave the faithful an example of a pious life. In 404, when John Chrysostom was banished from Constantinople, Tigrius the Presbyter and Eutropius the Reader, as his followers, were arrested and accused of setting fire to churches and buildings belonging to the holy hierarch’s opponents. The blessed Tigrius was tortured and then sent to Mesopotamia, where he gave up his soul in captivity. Saint Eutropius too, after torture, was thrown into a dungeon, where he died.

His body, which the godless threw to the dogs to be torn apart, was secretly carried away at night by the Christians and committed to the earth with honour. During the burial the singing of angels was clearly heard.
