St Alexander, Patriarch of Alexandria (+326)
Saint Alexander, Patriarch of Alexandria, governed the Church of Alexandria in 313–326. This was the time when the heresy of Arius was raging, and the preacher and champion of Orthodoxy fought tirelessly to expose the heresy. Around 320 he convened a local council, which condemned the teaching of Arius and cut off his followers from the Church. Yet the false teacher did not give up. In 325, at the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea, held to denounce Arius, Saint Alexander was one of the most prominent figures. His labours contributed greatly to preserving the purity of the Orthodox teaching on the Holy Trinity.
The blessed father peacefully commended his soul to the Lord in 326.
