St Donatus the Bishop (c. 387)
Saint Donatus the Bishop (+c. 387) lived in the time of the holy and pious King Theodosius the Great (379–397) and was bishop of the city of Euroea. Near the city, at Syrope, a poisoned spring flowed. When the bishop heard of this, he went there with his flock and drove out a terrible serpent that had its lair in the spring. The holy bishop prayed, blessed the water and drank it fearlessly; the people who saw this miracle glorified the Lord. Saint Donatus worked many other miracles too: once the daughter of King Theodosius fell ill and was possessed by an evil spirit. When Saint Donatus came to the palace, the demon went out of the tormented girl and the sick one was healed. A moneylender wanted to collect a debt a second time from the widow of a deceased debtor; the holy bishop raised the dead man, so that he might testify that the debt had been repaid.
Saint Donatus died around 387.
