St Agapetus, Pope of Rome (+536)
Saint Agapetus, Pope of Rome (+536), was an ardent defender of Orthodoxy. By his piety he earned universal respect, and in 535 he was elected Pope of Rome.
Theodoric the Great, king of the Goths, sent Saint Agapetus to Constantinople to negotiate peace. On the way the holy hierarch met a deaf-mute and lame man; he healed him of his lameness and then restored his speech as well. In Constantinople Saint Agapetus healed a blind beggar.
At that time a local church council was held in Constantinople. Saint Agapetus took part in the work of the council and convincingly defended the Orthodox teaching against the heresy of the heretic Severus.
The saint died in Constantinople in 536.
