St Euthalia the Virgin (+257)
Saint Euthalia the Virgin (+257) lived with her mother and brother in the Sicilian city of Leontini. Euthalia’s pagan mother was ill for a long time. Once the holy Martyrs Alphius, Philadelphus and Cyprian (commemorated 10 May) appeared to her in her sleep and told her that she would be healed if she believed in Christ. And indeed, after she was baptised together with her daughter, the sick woman was healed. Euthalia’s brother, the pagan Sirmius, was fiercely enraged by the conversion of his sister and mother. The mother fled from her son’s wrath; Saint Euthalia boldly confessed Christ before him and met a martyr’s end. First she was cruelly beaten, and then she was beheaded.
