Finding of the Relics of the Martyrs at Eugenius (+395–423)

The finding of the relics of the holy martyrs at Eugenius. In times of persecution the faithful usually buried the relics of the holy martyrs in hidden places. So it was that the bodies of many martyrs, whose identity time had concealed, were buried in Constantinople by the gate and tower called Eugenius. When miraculous healings began to take place there, the whereabouts of the holy relics became known, and they were translated with honour into a church. It was revealed to a devout cleric, Nicholas the Calligrapher, that among the holy relics found at Eugenius were the remains of the Apostle of the Seventy Andronicus and his helper Junia, whom the chief of the apostles Paul mentions in the Epistle to the Romans (Rom. 16:7). In the twelfth century, on the place where the holy relics of the martyrs were found, the Emperor Andronicus (1183–1185), whose patron saint was the Apostle Andronicus, built a magnificent church.
