St John Scholasticus, Patriarch of Constantinople (+577)

Saint John Scholasticus, Patriarch of Constantinople, was a lawyer by education. He was first ordained presbyter, and then enthroned on the patriarchal throne. The holy father governed the Church in 565–577. While still a presbyter he compiled the church canons in fifty titles, and as patriarch he gathered into one collection the civil decrees relating to the Church. On the basis of this collection the Nomocanon was compiled, on which church jurisprudence rests. The hierarch John is the author of the church hymns “Let us who mystically represent the Cherubim” and “Of Thy Mystical Supper”.
