Holy Scripture on drunkenness
Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor covetous, nor thieves, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Cor. 6:9–10
Shew not thy valiantness in wine; for wine hath destroyed many. Sirach 31:25
Wine is needful for the life of man, if it be drunk in moderation. What is life without wine? For it was created to make men glad. The gladness of the heart and the comfort of the soul is wine drunk in due season and in measure. Bitterness of soul is the drinking of much wine in strife and in quarrelling. Drunkenness maddens the fool to his own harm, takes away his strength and inflicts wounds. Rebuke not thy neighbour at a banquet when wine is drunk, nor despise him in his mirth; upbraid him not, nor trouble him with asking. Sirach 31:26–31
Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging; and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise. Sirach 20:1
A labourer given to drunkenness shall not grow rich, and he that despiseth small things shall fall little by little. Wine and women will make men of understanding to fall away, and he that cleaveth to harlots will become yet more shameless. Moths and worms shall have him to heritage, and a bold soul shall be destroyed. Sirach 19:1–3
Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath complaining? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it sparkleth in the cup, when it floweth smoothly. At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. Thine eyes shall behold strange things, and thine heart shall utter perverse things. And thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. Prov. 23:29–34
