On humility (humble-mindedness)

Many have entered the Kingdom without prophecies and wonders, but without humility no one will enter the heavenly bridal chamber. St John of Sinai

Many of us call ourselves sinful, and perhaps we even think so; but the humility of the heart is tried by insult from others. St John of Sinai

In any case let us be humble, for the humble man lies upon the ground, and how shall he who lies upon the ground fall? It is plain that he can fall who stands on high. Sts Barsanuphius the Great and John the Prophet

The sign of true humility is when the soul does not believe at all in its own good deeds and always strives to acquire them.

It is better to acquire humility by the sense of one's own weakness and failings than to fall into pride through hope in an imagined amendment. St Ambrose of Optina

All the saints confessed their unworthiness before God; by this their worth was made manifest, which consists in humility. St Philaret of Moscow

Humility consists in forgiving the brother who has sinned against thee before he asks forgiveness.

Faith consists in living in humble-mindedness and mercy. St Poemen the Great

A man who is sinful or slothful, but humble and contrite of heart, is more pleasing to God than one who does many good works and is puffed up by them. Abba Dorotheus

Pride and self-exaltation cast the devil down from heaven, while humble-mindedness and obedience raise a man from earth to heaven. St Anthony the Great

Love humble-mindedness — it will keep thee from sin. St Anthony the Great

Thou must be able to answer to every word thou hearest thus: forgive me — for humble-mindedness destroys all the snares of the evil one. St Anthony the Great

In every work of thine keep humble-mindedness. St Anthony the Great

The Lord desires that a man should call upon Him unceasingly with humility: “Who am I, O Lord my God, that Thou wast pleased to come down to earth, to be made flesh and to be crucified for me, that Thou mightest raise me up from corruption and death and make me a partaker and heir of Thy glory and Godhead?” When thou art filled with such humility and thinkest thus, the Lord will come to thee at once, and the Spirit of truth will dwell in thy heart. What is so pleasing and desired by God as a contrite and obedient heart and a self-humbling mind?! In such a self-contrite soul the Lord dwells and abides. St Symeon the New Theologian
