On 15 March (2 March by the old calendar), once the preparatory weeks come to an end, Christians embark on a special journey — Great Lent — a time bound up with spiritual renewal and transfiguration. It is a season in which a person, left alone with themselves and face to face with God, begins a journey through the world that is called Great Lent.
On this path you will be greatly helped by the literature and church items that we offer as a special set, delivered to your home in an "Alilo" gift bag.
The set includes:
the "Great Canon of Repentance" of St. Andrew of Crete, read in church on the first four days of the first week of Great Lent — for home reading by those who, for various reasons, cannot attend the services in church;
"Great Lent" by Protopresbyter Alexander Schmemann, which examines in detail the church readings of each week of Great Lent and their spiritual meaning;
the Holy Gospel (Four Gospels), read throughout the whole of Great Lent;
a prayer book;
a Psalter;
the book of Archbishop Innokenty of Kherson, "The Last Days of the Earthly Life of Our Lord Jesus Christ", which depicts the events of Holy Week — from Palm Sunday through to the Crucifixion;
the work of Edisher Chelidze, "The Church Truth about the Red Egg";
an icon of St. Ephraim the Syrian, whose prayer, composed by him, is part of the daily church and personal rule of prayer throughout the fast;
40 candles; 4 bundles of charcoal;
incense;
a censer.
May the Lord stretch out His hand to us, that we may worthily complete the course of the fast and, with a purified soul and a joyful heart, meet the glorious Resurrection of the Lord. Amen!
