The specific icon of the Archangel Michael is located in the Holy Monastery of Pammegiston Taxiarchon in the town of Mantamados in Lesbos and dates back to the 11th century.
Archangel Michael is one of the three Archangels mentioned in Christianity and appears early in the Old and New Testaments. His name means "Who is like EI (God)". Together with the Archangels Gabriel and Raphael , they are God's messengers for the protection of man.
His contribution was pivotal when he saved Lot's family from Sodom and when he presented himself to the Israelites to guide them after their deliverance from Egypt. In the future, as the New Testament states, Archangel Michael will be the one to announce the Second Coming.
