Morning Prayers
Through the prayers of our holy fathers, O Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us.
Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee.
O Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, who art everywhere present and fillest all things with Thy grace, Treasury of good things and Giver of life: come and abide in us, and cleanse us from every stain, and save our souls, O Good One. *
Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Thrice)
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
O Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. O Lord, deliver us and release us from our sins; O Master, pardon our iniquities; O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Thy name’s sake.
Lord, have mercy. (Thrice)
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Having risen from sleep, we fall down before Thee, O Good One, and cry aloud to Thee, O Mighty One, the hymn of the angels: Holy, Holy, Holy art Thou, O God; through the Theotokos have mercy on us.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
From bed and sleep Thou hast raised me up, O Lord: enlighten my mind and my heart, and open my lips to sing to Thee, O Holy Trinity: Holy, Holy, Holy art Thou, O God; through the Theotokos have mercy on us.
Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Suddenly the Judge shall come, and the deeds of every man shall be laid bare; but with fear let us cry out at midnight: Holy, Holy, Holy art Thou, O God; through the Theotokos have mercy on us.
Lord, have mercy. (Twelve times)
Having risen from sleep, I thank Thee, O Holy Trinity, that in Thy great goodness and long-suffering Thou hast not been angry with me, the slothful sinner, nor hast Thou destroyed me in my iniquities, but hast shown me Thy wonted love for mankind, and as I lay in the abyss of despair Thou hast raised me up to rise at dawn and to glorify Thy might. Now enlighten the eyes of my mind, open my mouth to meditate on Thy words, to understand Thy ways, to do Thy will, and to sing to Thy name with the confession of my heart. To glorify and to hymn Thine all-honourable name, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
O come, let us worship God our King. O come, let us worship and fall down before Christ, our King and God. O come, let us worship and fall down before Christ Himself, our King and our God.
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy great mercy; and according to the multitude of thy compassions blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I am conscious of mine iniquity; and my sin is continually before me. Against thee only have I sinned, and done evil before thee: that thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged. For, behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother conceive me. For, behold, thou lovest truth: thou hast manifested to me the secret and hidden things of thy wisdom. Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be purified: thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow. Thou shalt cause me to hear gladness and joy: the afflicted bones shall rejoice. Turn away thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit in my inward parts. Cast me not away from thy presence; and remove not thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of thy salvation: establish me with thy directing Spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and ungodly men shall turn to thee. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation: and my tongue shall joyfully declare thy righteousness. O Lord, thou shalt open my lips; and my mouth shall declare thy praise. For if thou desiredst sacrifice, I would have given it: thou wilt not take pleasure in whole-burnt-offerings. Sacrifice to God is a broken spirit: a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, to Sion in thy good pleasure; and let the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then shalt thou be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, offering, and whole-burnt-sacrifices: then shall they offer calves upon thine altar.
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible;
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Only-begotten, begotten of the Father before all ages; Light of Light, true God of true God, begotten, not made, of one essence with the Father, by whom all things were made;
Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and of the Virgin Mary, and became man;
And was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered, and was buried;
And rose again on the third day, according to the Scriptures;
And ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of the Father;
And shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end.
And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of life, who proceedeth from the Father; who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; who spake by the prophets.
In one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the remission of sins.
I look for the resurrection of the dead,
And the life of the age to come. Amen.
O God, cleanse me, a sinner, for I have done nothing good in Thy sight; but deliver me from temptation, and let Thy will be among us, that without condemnation I may open my unworthy mouth and praise Thy holy name, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
O Lord our God, who in Thy great sweetness and Thy countless mercies hast bestowed on us, and been pleased to let us pass the length of this night in peace, and hast shielded us from every temptation and evil: do Thou, O Master and Creator of all, grant us to attain to the prayers of the dawn; make the true light from the treasuries of Thy knowledge to shine forth in our hearts, and grant us to do all Thy will.
O Lord Almighty, King of the powers and of all flesh, who dwellest on high and beholdest all things lowly, who knowest the secrets of men and the workings of hearts and minds; O Thou who art without beginning and invisible, O Light unapproachable, who art the Light that casteth no shadow: do Thou, O immortal King, look upon our supplication at this hour, for we trust in the abundance of Thy mercy; and we pray Thee, accept the supplication from these defiled lips of ours, and forgive us all our transgressions, in deed, in word and in thought, known and unknown, and cleanse us from all defilement of flesh and spirit. Grant us a watchful mind and good thoughts, and deliver us from every temptation that cometh upon us from the night of this world, that we may be counted worthy to reach that bright and radiant day of the second coming of Thine Only-begotten Son, our Lord, God and Saviour Jesus Christ, when He cometh in glory to judge all men and to render to each according to his deeds: that we be not cast out for our slothfulness, but be found watchful and risen up in good works, awaiting the joyful presentation, and to enter the divine bridal chamber of His glory; that we too, with the saints who dwell therein, may be counted worthy to keep feast unceasingly at that divine voice of His glory, and with a purified face to behold the face of Thine ineffable Son. For Thou art the true Light that enlighteneth and sanctifieth all men, and all creation praiseth Thee unto the ages of ages. Amen.
O holy Angel, who standest over my wretched soul and my miserable life, forsake me not, a sinner, nor depart from me because of my defilements; give no place to the evil one to master me through the weakness of this mortal body of mine. Take hold of the hand of my fallen and despised soul, and guide me in the ways of life. Yea, O holy Angel of God, guardian and protector of my unworthy soul and body, forgive me all wherewith I have grieved thee all the days of my life, and whatever I have sinned this past night; shelter me this present day also, and keep me from temptation and from the wiles of the adversary, that I may not anger God by any sin; and intercede for me with God, that He may establish me in His fear, and show me worthy of His kingdom and an heir of His goodness. Amen.
To thee, my Champion and invincible Defender, we thy servants, delivered by thee from dangers, offer thanksgiving, O Virgin Theotokos; but as thou hast might unassailable, free us from every harm, that we may sing to thee, O blessed one: Rejoice, O Bride unwedded.
O all-glorious Ever-Virgin, Mother of Christ God, bring our prayer to thy Son and our God, that He may save our souls.
O Virgin Theotokos, rejoice, Mary full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, for thou hast borne the Saviour of our souls.
Pray to God for me, O holy (name), for I fervently hasten to thee, the speedy helper and intercessor for my soul.
Save, O God, Thy people and bless Thine inheritance; grant to Thy God-protected people victory over the barbarians by Thy Cross, and keep Thy people beneath its shelter, that we may say: O Lord, glory to Thee.
Remember, O Lord our God, Thy mercies and compassions, which are from everlasting, for the sake of which Thou didst become man and didst take upon Thyself crucifixion and death for the salvation of them that believe aright in Thee; Thou didst rise, ascend into heaven and sit at the right hand of God the Father: look down in mercy upon these Thy suppliants, who call upon Thee with all their heart; incline Thine ear and hear me, Thy lowly and unprofitable servant, and all Thy people. First remember, O Lord, Thy holy, catholic and apostolic Church, which Thou hast purchased with Thy precious blood: establish, strengthen, exalt and multiply it, keep it settled in peace, free it from the assaults of the heathen, and preserve it for ever from the gates of insatiable hell; quench the venom of the heretics, bring their speech to nought by the power of Thy Holy Spirit, and turn them back. (Prostration)
Save, O Lord, and have mercy on our God-protected people, its authorities and its armed forces.
Remember, O Lord, our God-protected people and its government; fortify their dominion round about, subdue under their feet every enemy and adversary, speak in their hearts good things and peace for Thy holy Church and all Thy people, and grant them peace and tranquillity, that in their calm we may lead a quiet life, living in right faith and piety. (Prostration)
Save, O Lord, and have mercy on our great lord, the Most Holy and Most Blessed Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Archbishop of Mtskheta-Tbilisi and Metropolitan of Bichvinta and Tskhum-Abkhazia, our father Ilia; the holy Orthodox Patriarchs of the whole world, the most reverend Metropolitans, Archbishops and Bishops, the honourable priests, the deacons in Christ and all the monastic orders, members of the Church, whom Thou hast set to shepherd Thy rational flock; and by their prayers have mercy on me also, a sinner, and save me. (Prostration)
Save, O Lord, and have mercy on my spiritual father, confessor and teacher (name), who ever keepeth vigil and laboureth for my soul; and by his prayers have mercy on me also, a sinner, and save me. (Prostration)
Save, O Lord, and have mercy on my parents (names), my brethren and kinsfolk after the flesh, and all my neighbours and friends; grant them Thy peace and fill them with every good thing. (Prostration)
Save, O Lord, and have mercy on the aged and the young, the orphans and the widows, those lying in sickness and infirmity, the sorrowing, those in trials, those in captivity and in prison, those persecuted for righteousness’ sake in Orthodoxy by the godless and the heathen, by heretics and apostates: remember Thy servants, enlighten them, raise them up, set them free, strengthen them by Thy power, grant them forgiveness and deliverance. (Prostration)
Save, O Lord, and have mercy on those who hate and afflict me, and who work iniquity against me, and who oppress and revile me; punish them not for their iniquities, but turn them from the evil which they bear towards me, and have mercy on them according to Thy great mercy. (Prostration)
Those who have renounced the Orthodox faith and strayed from the ways of truth, and are confounded by heresies, enlighten with the light of Thy knowledge; turn them to the right faith, and unite them to Thy holy, catholic and apostolic Church, that they may know Thee, the only true God, and worship Thee. (Prostration)
Remember, O Lord, the souls of Thy departed servants and handmaids, my parents and all my kinsfolk (names), and all our fathers, brethren and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of resurrection from the dead and of life eternal; forgive them all their transgressions, and grant them eternal memory. (Thrice, with a prostration)
It is truly meet that we should magnify thee, O Theotokos, who art ever-blessed and all-immaculate and the Mother of our God. Thee, more honourable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, who without corruption gavest birth to God the Word, the only Theotokos, we magnify in song.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Lord, have mercy. (Thrice)
O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, through the prayers of Thy most pure Mother, of our venerable and God-bearing fathers and of all Thy saints, have mercy on us. Amen.
* From Pascha until the Ascension, instead of this prayer the troparion is read: “Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life” (Thrice).
From the Ascension until Pentecost we begin the prayers with “Holy God”.
