Venerable Bassian (V)
The Venerable Bassian was born in eastern Syria. He laboured in Constantinople in the reign of the Emperor Marcian (450–457). Here the saint founded a house, in which as many as three hundred monks gradually gathered. Among them was the Venerable Matrona (commemorated 9 November), disguised in men’s clothing. The blessed Bassian lived to a deep old age.
Saint Bassian, known for his God-pleasing life and his miracles, reposed in peace and was buried in the house he had founded.
