Holy Martyr Ariadne (II)

The holy Martyr Ariadne was the maidservant of Tertullus, an elder of the city of Primnessus (Phrygia), in the time of the emperors Hadrian (117–138) and Antoninus Pius (138–161). Once, when her master arranged a pagan sacrifice in honour of his son’s birthday, the Christian Ariadne refused to take part in the lawless revelry. For this she was cruelly tortured and then thrown into prison. After many torments and trials Saint Ariadne was released. She left the city and made for the wilderness, but Tertullus sent soldiers after her to seize her. When she saw her pursuers, Saint Ariadne asked God for help, and a miracle took place: the mountain split open, and the handmaid of Christ hid within it.
