The Miracle of the Most Holy Mother of God at Miasena (864)

The miracle of the Most Holy Mother of God at Miasena. In the reign of the Emperor Leo the Isaurian (717–741), during the persecution of the icon-venerators, the enemies of God threw an icon of the Most Holy Mother of God belonging to the monastery of Miasena (in Armenia, near the city of Melitene) into the lake of Azurus. More than a hundred years later, when Orthodoxy triumphed once more, the icon floated up to the surface of the lake completely undamaged. Every year the Church commemorates this miracle, which took place on 1 September 864.
