Holy Martyr Quintus of Phrygia (+c. 284)
The holy Martyr Quintus was born in Phrygia; his Christian parents brought him up in piety. Having come to Aeolis, the saint did many good works and healed the possessed by prayer. Rufus, the governor of the region, tried to make the saint agree to offer sacrifice to the pagan idols, but by God’s providence the governor himself was seized by an evil spirit. The blessed Quintus healed him in the name of Christ. Shaken by what had happened and filled with gratitude, Rufus gave gifts to the Lord’s chosen one and set him free.
The holy ascetic set off for Pergamon. On the way he was seized by the pagan inhabitants of the city of Cyme and tortured for confessing Christ. The Lord Himself stood up for Quintus: the earth shook so violently that the pagan temple was shattered to pieces. The terrified blasphemers stopped the torture, but still kept the confessor in fetters until the arrival of the new governor, Clearchus. Clearchus ordered his knees to be broken, but by the grace of the Holy Spirit the blessed one was miraculously healed of his wounds. After this Saint Quintus lived another ten years and worked many miracles, and in 283 he commended his soul to the Lord in peace.
