Translation of the Relics of the Holy Wonderworkers Cyrus and John (412)
The translation of the relics of the holy wonderworkers Cyrus and John from the city of Canopus near Alexandria to the village of Manuthin took place in 412. This Egyptian village, with its ruined idol-temple, had become a dwelling place of evil spirits and struck terror into everyone. The Patriarch Theophilus (385–412) wished to cleanse this place of demons, but did not manage to. The hierarch’s wish was fulfilled by his successor, the Patriarch Cyril (412–444). The blessed father besought the Lord earnestly to help him carry out the holy work. At last a radiant angel stood before him and commanded him to translate to Manuthin the incorrupt relics of the holy unmercenaries Cyrus and John. His Holiness Patriarch Cyril carried out the heavenly command, and then also built in the village a church dedicated to the martyrs. From that time on Manuthin was freed from the dominion of evil spirits. Through the prayers of Cyrus and John many miracles took place here.
The account of the saints is placed in the reading for 31 January.
